Covid vaccine, any issues working out after?
Covid vaccine, any issues working out after?
Just wondering if anyone has had any issues working out after the vaccine shot. I've been rowing for about 10 years now and average about 2 million meters a year. I passed out this morning immediately after a 80% effort 5k, 3 days after 2nd moderna shot. I felt good throughout throughout the work out and was planning on doing some interval sprints after the 5k. I had no real side affects from the shot so figured I was good for a nice hard work out, but after waking up on the floor after the 5k I abandoned that idea. I was well hydrated and had ate a couple hours prior, Just in my normal routine before a work out. I've never experienced anything quite like this and have to believe it has something to do with the vaccine. Has anyone had any issues resuming normal workout routine after getting the vaccine?

Re: Covid vaccine, any issues working out after?
I had the Astra Zeneca vaccine eight days ago. I felt good the next morning (circa 14 hours later) and managed a 24k, at a slightly slower than normal steady pace, but as the day progressed I felt more and more drained. I had the next day off as i slept badly and had digestion problems, which still seem to be lingering.
I didn't try anything hard until the Tuesday and haven't had any other side effects, but I have heard of some strange reactions e.g. raised HR for a few weeks afterwards.
Clearly, your issue is a lot worse, and you should consult a doctor as that's an extreme reaction.

Felt like crap 24 hours after the 2nd dose. Next day, was alright and back to workout as usual.

Covid experience
Ok, had a mild case or at least most would say. No hospital, no breathing issues, just knocked on my behind for 8-10 days.
Have a good doctor so not looking for medical advice, just interested in talking it through or hearing others experience.
After about two weeks, my first time back on the erg was 500 meters at SS pace. Over 3 weeks I have worked my way back to 1hr of SS albeit at a pace 10 seconds slower than before. Have limited my HR to 122 over that time. HR rises so much quicker than before, simply discouraging.
Just wondering how long it may take to get back. Previous RHR was 46-48. Now anywhere from 52-56. Even with a mild experience it took it out of me. Curious if my decline is more do to the Covid or the 5 weeks of no sharp work. 62 yr old lightweight male.
Any comments are welcome.

Joebasscat,
I’ll preface this by saying I haven’t had any test to confirm that I had that virus going around. But
I had a mild episode in March/april 2020. Thought nothing about it. But I started hearing things about “long haul” in late autumn that got me to digging deeper and it became apparent that that mild “something” might have been the virus.
Anyway, I dealt with fatigue I’d never felt before for that long. Oh there was other stuff: the head aches, brain fog, muscle aches and joint pain; but that fatigue just hung around.
Long story short, pretty much everything has resolved — 10k row this AM, 4-5 hours pushing a lawn mower which is roughly 7’ish miles, and I didn’t need a nap (but I should sleep well tonight). Also, in the month since I received my very own C2 Rowerg, I’ve put in over a quarter million meters, regained some strength in my legs that were injured in a bike-auto incident a few years ago, and my RHR has dropped back down into the upper 40s from low 60s.
I would say just keep at it slow. Push when you can, accept the limits when you hit them. I’m a year older (hey boomer) and essentially lost a year. It’s frustrating but I suspect you’ll be pushing harder before long.

If it wasn’t for my exercise decline and awareness of HR levels due to rowing I would say I’m 100%, so no lingering fatigue associated with normal daily activities. I’ve spoken to others and the fatigue is the one constant. So I feel blessed in that respect.
Your advice is solid and thanks for sharing your experience.
Boomer out!
Bingo! Of course I’m not a doctor but your symptoms sure sound like “the virus”.Anyway, I dealt with fatigue I’d never felt before for that long.

Re: Covid vaccine, any issues working out after?
I didn't have any trouble working out after either of my AZ shots. Had some mild shivers on day 2 after first dose and didn't really feel anything after 2nd dose. Just passing out without any other (much more commin symptoms) seems weird and I would consider seeing a GP.
Re: Covid experience
Havn't had covid symptoms, but working from home stupid hours without even a commute has given me periods of zero exercise. Recently rowed twice in a month. Afterwards I could only row at 2:31 if I was to keep my HR below 75% for 90 min. Beforehand that was 2:23 and that was not with a total lack of exercise, so much of the loss may well be the lack of exercise. In addition, if I have a low grade illness (eg mild cold), my HR before a row is 10 - 15 BPM higher than normal. Had a similar effect when had my first shot of the AZ vaccine.
Hope that helps.

Re: Covid experience
Thanks Iain.
I had already gotten my 1st shot of Pfizer and maybe 10 days later developed symptoms. I was advised to delay the 2nd shot and then get it, which I did delay for about a week. (Controversial, but what isn't these days) The 2nd shot hit me a little harder but nothing to whine about except my HR spiked more than when I had the virus which I found interesting. I am rarely ill so my experience with the HR increase is new to me.
Last year I was following the Interactive Plan for 2k prep and was always outside my prescribed HR for UT2, UT1, AT, etc... Never the less I improved my 2k considerably and HR lowered as time went on as you would expect. But my pace of workouts was not sustainable. (Not sufficient recovery) Which it was never intended to go on indefinitely. Needed to transition.
I had recently seen Dr Steven Seiler's recommendations for LSS HR pacing and had implemented his recommendations along with 2 day a week sharp workout intervals. I was once again seeing improvements. Now the LSS just doesn't seem likely to get me back were I was (coupled with the 2 sharper workouts) but I am trying to display restraint. Oh well, wasn't setting any records anyway other than my own.

Re: Covid experience
Got my second shot today, wondering about tomorrow's training. I might just do a long easy steady state.

Well, how did it go? I think the shot reactions are generally over blown but HR may very well climb. I believe your body has been tricked into thinking it has the virus and therefore the reaction for a day or two. But we are all different.

Most/some get some kind of reaction after 2nd vax shot. Wife & son-in-law had absolutely no negative effects. I felt like crap after 24 hrs, so took day off from working out. Daughter had it bad, just like a dose of food poisoning. Go figure.

Re: Covid experience
My second dose of the Moderna vaccine had no appreciable effect the day I received it — and the next day I had chills (but no fever) and barely enough energy to walk to the bathroom as necessary, spending virtually the entire day asleep. The day following that I was fine. I haven’t been so wiped out since recovering from intensive chemo last year. Fortunately, it only lasted a day, rather than months! My kid had a fairly similar reaction to his 2nd Pfizer-BioNTech dose. Neither one of us was in any shape to row for a day, and then we were OK. Considering my immune system was rendered ineffective for about a year, I was delighted to have a reaction to the booster, as it means it is most likely back in action!Joebasscat wrote: ↑May 11th, 2021, 8:38 pmWell, how did it go? Yes, it seems to quite variable, and unpredictable, as to which reaction any one person might have.
Fortunately, both my and I had no negative effects, and I erged a few after getting the shot, and regularly the following days as well.

Re: Covid vaccine, any issues working out after?
We had our first jabs beginning of March, my wife never felt a thing and had zero side effects. I had a slight headache next day and elevated HR for about a week after which wouldn't have been apparent had I not been using a monitor. A session which would normally peak at 140 was peaking around 149.
Having second jab next week so will see what happens after that. We had AZ version.
