Rowing hard at 20spm is tough. It’s recommended as an exercise to develop strength and power in the drive. I was told to think of it as 1 second drive 2 seconds recovery. People also exaggerate the layback a bit to extend the length of stroke. It takes practise. Good Luck!_Spike_ wrote: ↑April 6th, 2021, 4:32 pmOn a different topic, I found the CTC really hard this month. I normally row best at a high stroke rate so 20 spm was well out of my comfort zone. I could hold the pace without too much trouble (by pulling every three seconds) but could not develop any power. I managed 2362m at 20 spm but can go well over 2500m without difficulty at a steady 38 spm.

Re: Forum Flyers
Although I missed this post on Sunday it alerted me to check it out on Youtube yesterday. Great races both in the women's & men's. Well worth time spent watching it. And just to show that you can learn something new everyday, or that I'm still clueless about much having to do with rowing, I not only learned that Abigail Parker in the Cambridge boat is the daughter of Olympian and legendary Harvard coach Harry Parker, but that her mother is Olympic Gold Medalist Kathy Keeler. Young Abigail seems to be continuing a rich rowing tradition in the family.jackarabit wrote: ↑April 4th, 2021, 10:53 amHeadsup The Boat Race (women) just ready to go off live on Utube.
Also, sorry to see Freddy go. It was great having him for as long as we did. Best wishes with the new team; they know talent when they see it. If you ever want to come back we'll be glad to have you.

As the eagle eyed may have spotted, I have left the Forum Flyers team/affiliation as I have been invited to join the MAD Indoor Rowing Team, which I have accepted. It’s been great to be a member of this team, you’ve been very kind.
Hopefully I’ll met some of you soon at BRIC/WRICH etc. once the virus has passed! And put some faces to names!

Oh no!! All of a sudden I have lost my motivation to continue with 20km/day in the challenge...faach1 wrote: ↑April 7th, 2021, 7:25 amHi everyone,

It did make me more aware of my technique so it's something I'll try again. It felt better when I tried today with lower resistance so I'll be having another go at the CTC this month to see if I can produce a better distance.
Re: Forum Flyers
Good luck, Freddie...you are an awesome rower...and will definitely be missed!

I feel the same except for the distance ....... or feel like now I need to do 50k/day!skkipper wrote: ↑April 7th, 2021, 3:16 pmOh no!! All of a sudden I have lost my motivation to continue with 20km/day in the challenge...faach1 wrote: ↑April 7th, 2021, 7:25 amHi everyone,

Lots of fun in the new team Freddie!!
Ugh, I fell down the stairs on Monday and am sporting the biggest, sowllen, now dark purple bruise in town on my left thigh. s Thought I can wing it as it's not the behind, but ouch no. Sorry no meters from me this week.
I am enjoying all the discussion on the ctc. Not looking forward to this one. If I really focus on rowing slowly, I can do 21/22 spm. Wondering if it's harder to row slow because I am short?

Re: Forum Flyers
For guys your build rate 20 work is very tough. If running is your main goal, getting a stronger stroke is maybe not the wise option. Running and rowing are both on the opposite side of the endurance spectrum, rowers being tall and relative heavy, runners smaller and certainly light. A good heavyweight rower is often not a good runner. And a good longdistance runner simply lacks power to be fast._Spike_ wrote: ↑April 6th, 2021, 4:32 pmI'm a big fan of cross training. Rowing is usually only a small part of my training as I'm primarily a runner. Lots of cycling in the nicer weather, and weights and flexibility training in between.
For overall health, a mixture of exercise is definitely the best but I know that I cannot be at my best as a rower at the same time as I'm peaking in my running. A big part of this is that the heavier I am, the better I row but the extra weight slows my running down. (I aim to be under 65Kg for running but towards 70Kg for rowing).

You're right, hjs. I'm 5-10kg under the lightweight limit and at least 6" too short to be a top rower. Can't do much about the latter!hjs wrote: ↑April 8th, 2021, 7:38 amFor guys your build rate 20 work is very tough. I've clearly found that I can't peak at rowing and running at the same time. But I can still put in a decent rowing effort even though my running is taking front stage at the moment as I look forward to some sort of a summer track season.

Re: Forum Flyers
Agree, but to give you an idea, the best (relative) lightweight I have heard of was a 6.02 2k at 69kg. And 2 lightweights went sub 6. For you I would be a matter of building a stronger stroke (lower rating) but not let the bodyweight go up...._Spike_ wrote: ↑April 8th, 2021, 7:45 amYou're right, hjs. Re: Forum Flyers
It’s the drive that makes the meters, the recovery makes the rate. Pull longer, stronger, quicker? Yes, but we also have to curb our enthusiasm on recovery to get the rest necessary to create the quality strokes that improve power/stroke. Special training. Like jump rope with ankle weights. Not the main event!

Congrats to Sheena on the Concept2 World Erg Challenge. She broke 500K with still 7 days to go...and it looks like 100% on the rower! Well done Sheena! However it looks like you are to blame for scaring away Freddie...he could not match the numbers you are putting up
