Did the CTC and ended up with 201 strokes each and not sure if more strokes would have helped. Had a good, steady rhythm which seemed more important so i didn't have to think much. :D

Ended up with 2547m and 2529m, so booked the 2529. Pretty good power workout!

Good luck to all those who will or have done the challenge.

I did and posted my CTC challenge today also.

I had always assumed that it was supposed to be done as an 2 x 10:00 minute intervals with a 5 minute interval in between. My two intervals only differed by 2 m so was rather impressed by my consistency. I just kept on eye on the spm and if it displayed 21 spm for a stroke or two, I slowed down the recovery a bit. I too found a steady rhythm was the key. Didn't have the actual number of strokes displayed on ERgdata, but I ended up with 422 total (which included a dozen or so during the rest period.)

Will probably have another go once the April Fool's Challenge and the Team Challenge are both finished.

Hi,
Had a go at the CTC this morning as a natural low rater this suits me. I counted every minute, 200 strokes exactly. Ended up with 2254m and 2268m so I may have another go later this month.
Cheers all,

Debbie

Being new to a limited stroke rate challenge, is it better to lower the drag factor?

I’d keep it the same, although others may change it.

It seemed to me, because of the longer duration between strokes, the flywheel would lose less spin with less drag; I thought that might be an advantage. I'm sure there are other factors involved that I'm not aware of--which is why I asked.

Thanks for the input.

I had it set to the same as my 2000m and kept my strokes as long as comfortable.

Started supplementing my workouts with runs, pushups, ab work, and some weights and now it's hard to hold my previous paces. Maybe I'm generally worn out and just need to allow time to adjust to different work? Thought these things would help strengthen complementary muscle groups.

Wish there was a sort of hard reset, haha. Like - sit down and just row 15k and your body will remember what it needs to row, lol!

Does anyone else supplement their workout? Is there a routine or schedule you follow?

I don't follow a schedule, but especially with nice weather, I'll forego a rowing workout (which usually includes some push-ups or ab work between intervals) in favor of cycling or some other outdoors stuff (but mostly cycling). On days I don't have a lot of energy but still want a workout, I've found a great way to hit the reset button is some steady-state work on the erg, which makes for a great active-recovery workout. For me. Everyone's different, but I think it's really important to listen to what your body's trying to tell you and don't feel guilty about taking a rest day when needed.

Before national lockdown 3 here in the UK, I did weights 3-4 times a week. Depending on your goals it’s not necessarily essential but variation does increase motivation!

I'm a big fan of cross training. Rowing is usually only a small part of my training as I'm primarily a runner. Lots of cycling in the nicer weather, and weights and flexibility training in between.

For overall health, a mixture of exercise is definitely the best but I know that I cannot be at my best as a rower at the same time as I'm peaking in my running. A big part of this is that the heavier I am, the better I row but the extra weight slows my running down. (I aim to be under 65Kg for running but towards 70Kg for rowing).

On a different topic, I found the CTC really hard this month. I normally row best at a high stroke rate so 20 spm was well out of my comfort zone. I could hold the pace without too much trouble (by pulling every three seconds) but could not develop any power. I managed 2362m at 20 spm but can go well over 2500m without difficulty at a steady 38 spm.

Hi everyone,

As the eagle eyed may have spotted, I have left the Forum Flyers team/affiliation as I have been invited to join the MAD Indoor Rowing Team, which I have accepted. It’s been great to be a member of this team, you’ve been very kind.

Hopefully I’ll met some of you soon at BRIC/WRICH etc. once the virus has passed! And put some faces to names!

Good luck to you, Freddie. It was great having you on the team. Very impressive rowing.

Hi Suzanne,
I really think it depends on your personal goals. When I was training to be competitive at rowing I was told to do more rowing there was no substitute! I did supplement with a weights session once a week. If you have a training programme with a good variety of sessions you should be fine. Rowing gives you a good all round workout. These days I row and do Pilates and I feel that’s enough for me. Also it’s good to remember that rest days are important so if you’re overdoing it, take a break!
Best wishes,

Debbie :)
