I almost didn't do anything today, but I dragged myself on and knew it had to be the CTC. I'm still not feeling quite right, so I didn't expect much, but this is a 22 second PB. Admittedly, it is a bit of a soft PB as my last 6k was more or less 12 months ago, and I have only ever done about four of them.

I hit the inevitable wall at about 4.5k, and the last 750 was fuelled by pride, and a lot of gurning and swearing.

I have just realised that this is also a 5k PB, so I'll need to do that again sometime soon
Wow! Well done Stu. I wasn’t expecting an attempt on such a ‘short’ distance.

It must be 6k season! More strong stuff Alex. I think this one hurts because 5k is a ‘normal’ distance but then there ‘only’ another 1k to go - and that’s not very far!!!

Thanks Tony. It's this month's CTC (Cross Team Challenge) so I was rapidly running out of time. I have been neglecting the shorter distances, and I find this type of session a good way to get back into it before doing shorter intervals, but tbh it started off faster than I intended and then I just had to cling on.

You should consider joining a team if you're not already a member of one, and you like the idea of a couple of monthly challenges. Lots of team options out there, but I row for Team Oarsome. You'd be a welcome addition to any team.

Very good Alex,

Bit of a wobble with the 1:49.8, great work hanging on and finishing so strongly (at the same rate too - your more powerful stroke is really paying dividends).

Nice one Stu,

The 6k may be the ugly step child of the 5k, but it does have a really nice round target for fast ergers: sub-20.

Very strong, even if this is a short sprint for you.

Thanks Max. It is a strange distance but I need to keep a handle on this type of effort, as I'm doing too much 80 and not enough 20.

6k used to be a standard for otw rowers. It was 2k and 6k as testpieces. Over here we used to have a 6k race also. Which later turned in a 20min time trial, which was the first wrong step. Later it got cancelled fully. To expensive to organize.

That's interesting. I might try and do it more often, as despite it being quite close to 5k, it's not that similar

Well put. I find it to be kind of an odd distance, too.

For a quite inelegant transition: I did a 10K today and wanted to share with you all my fourth new PB since late February - I squeaked in just under the deadline for the March event for the Indoor Rowers League, and chopped 1:03.6 off my previous PB, set in June 2020.

Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr S/M
39:15.5 10,000m 1:57.7 214 1037 25
7:48.7 2,000m 1:57.1 218 1048 25
7:52.2 4,000m 1:58.0 213 1032 25
7:53.2 6,000m 1:58.3 211 1027 25
7:53.2 8,000m 1:58.3 211 1027 25
7:48.3 10,000m 1:57.0 218 1050 27

I had set a goal of sub-39 minutes, but after starting out at that pace, I was pretty sure that for today I wasn't going to be able to hold onto it. Maybe on another day, but I needed to get this piece in to make sure I finished out the season with the IRL schedule. I feel like for how I felt going in, I paced it pretty much spot-on. Next time, I'm going to see that 38 on my monitor!
