Wow! Lots of activity going on since I last checked the Forum.

Freddie - good show on your redone 6k!

And, glad to see so many boats off the dock in the March CTC. We only need 3 more entries to get a 6th boat off the dock.

Have managed to work myself back up to a 6k row this morning. I'm still unable to pull quite as hard as before so lowered the drag factor and have also been working on slowing my stroke recovery down to lower my stroke rate. Was keeping it at around 21 spm right up until the last 500m and then it blew up. Hoping that these lower stroke rates will prepare me well for the April CTC.

I've been managed to get outside for some cycling - but not today. Wind is awful (45 kph with gusts up to 70 kph).

Just an idea, but for next month’s CTC, would anyone like to use ErgRace to complete it?
So I just played around with creating races. Unfortunately, I don't think it will work until they have made some changes. They do not have the capability for intervals yet, only single distance or time or calorie pieces. In theory, we could get around that if someone were controlling the race and set up two 10 min pieces and started the second exactly 5 minutes afterwards: this would show up in our log books as two single 10 minute pieces and we would just have to know that we did it correctly with the 5 minute rest in between. But in order for that second piece to be able to start and to start at the correct time, everyone will have to bring the flywheel to a stop by ~4'50" and will have to start the second piece at rest. It just might be a little more work than it is worth at the moment.

What should I expect to aim for on the next CTC? I've never had a s/m goal. Tried a 10 min piece with max 20s/m and found it difficult to gauge. Had an ave of about 2:20. More of a power piece?

I'd love to hear about this, too - I tried out a little r20 work today and found it hard to not only stay at r20 but also to generate any real power without breaking pace. Any tips or strategies from the more experienced of you?

1) old school is count s/m watching the PM workout clock

2) new school is display stroke count in one of the two ErgData multiparameter windows on blab slab and adjust (slow recovery or drop/add strokes as necessary)

3) HINT: the PM rounds down rate average to integer value. I mean it rounds down from actual 20.9 spm to 20, 21.9 to 21, etc. 209 strokes can be taken in 10’ (.9 x 10) and finish with rate average 20spm as by reported by PM summary.

Well, count me in the new school. Item No. 3: This is great to know - thanks!

So count targets for each minute would be equal or less than 21,42,63,84,105,125,146,167, 188, 209.....interesting and good to know. Thanks!

I still use old school, for me it's the most reliable especially when you get tired, it's something to concentrate on. Had a wee play around after my normal training, equates to the same rate as my 10km time, or 2k time plus 10 seconds. With a bit of practice it will improve hopefully. I went out a bit hard to start with as not too sure and suffered in the middle, held a better rate to finish.
Word to self for next time, be patient for the first 5 minutes.
Cheers

Simple progression would be from 105 to 126 but eliminating 1 stroke midway is a clever way to eliminate the 1” overage. Good on you for planning ahead.

Good to know about the PM rounding down on the stroke rate!! Thanks Jack

Any last minute takers for the March CTC - only need one more entry to float that 6th boat.

No one should feel guilty about seeking an advantage from the PM’s imprecision as the reported average rate from PM is the final authority for the challenge. The best use of this information is recognizing that there is forgiveness for a few strokes over 200 without making the mistake of exploiting it to the maximum, risking overtopping the 21 rate, and taking the penalty. Should you desire to know your actual rate average out to two decimal places and rounded, divide stroke count as reported by ErgData by time of piece or active period of interval in decimal minutes.

Just posted my time. The covid jab really knocked me for six, so I was going to pass. Forced myself to do it, and suprised myself by getting a PB!

CTChallenge from the new Kiwi team this month. Moving to the top like cream! Also fantastic Americas Cup series in Aukland harbor last month. Come a long way from the NYYC stranglehold on the Old Mug in the sixties and seventies!

Congrats on your 6k PB, Neil. My second Pfizer stick took the wind out of my sails for a week or so. Our vaxx admin schedule is improving in the US but just getting to genpop age group 51-65 later this week.

Neil: Hope your arm didn't hurt too much for the row. Congrats on your PB. I am still awaiting the vaccine myself. I wish we were getting to the age group 51-65 this week, but I think it will be closer to the end of April.
