Now any advice on what to do next? Simply follow the podcast forever?

Also, my ergapp did not pick up my work-out. Do I have to have the app open in order for it to log?

Hi Valdus,

Good to hear from you again. 👍
There is a lot of useful information about form to be found on the C2 site. And while rowing is really easy on the one hand (well, it looks easy), but it’s just as easy to pick up mistakes in the technique. It is a lot of work to unlearn those again. So why not spend some time browsing around the site and the forum.
I heard good things about the Pete Plan for Beginners, but have never tried it myself (learnt to row on the water). Perhaps another 50+ member has firsthand knowledge for you.
At some (brave) point you could film yourself while rowing and ask for comments from the old forum hands. They won’t let you down.

Just following the podcast seems rather boring to me... I look at the WOD or workout of the day for inspiration and variation. (Look at left downside of your logpage.)
And my machine is too old for any card or app stuff. Can’t be of any help there, I’m afraid.

Just keep rowing and keep having fun!

By the way...

Just contributed my first meters to the challenge and I noticed that team 50+ only counted 13 members. 😧 But aren’t we a lot bigger? It would be such a pity if people forgot to join the team challenge. (C2 reminded me I still had to click the button, so I did.)
It is such a great motivation to know I’m not on my own. Pandemic rowing can otherwise become quite a lonesome business.
Let’s all join! 😅

Hi Ante, welcome :)

I am also motivated by these challenges ... maybe too motivated! I sometimes end up rowing more than I really should and neglect to take rest days.

I just got my erg back in September, so it will be interesting to see how much I row over the summer when the weather is nice and other sports and hobbies beckon.

Thanks Ante!

I completely forgot to join the challenge.

Have changed that now. Though I doubt my meters have made much difference to the team total.
All our meters count and are much appreciated by 'the team' as a whole!! :)

I enjoy checking out our team challenge page and seeing all the effort being put in.

I did the beginning row. I liked following the form (back, body, arms, arms, body, back).

Now any advice on what to do next? Simply follow the podcast forever?

Also, my ergapp did not pick up my work-out. Do I have to have the app open in order for it to log?
Hey Valdus, welcome :)

When I was getting started I generally rowed along to beginner videos on youtube from DarkHorse, TrainingTall, RowAlong, and others. Here are some examples:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hM8TtDwcuCo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X63GI2Pt4k
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAWvwtu93WA

Most of these are shorter pieces and include drills to get your form dialed in. Don't worry about time or distance so much in the beginning, good form is key to injury prevention (especially as we age!). I rowed along to these videos for two months, and I think doing so really helped contribute to learning the basics.

Where you go from there will depend on your goals. For example, I am currently building my base aerobic fitness for backpacking and biking this summer, so the majority of my training is Maffetone type (low intensity longer pieces with heart rate cap).

Re: ergData app
Yes you need to have the ergData app open and connected to the PM5 to record and then sync your workouts to the logbook. However you can still upload your workouts manually as well on your logbook front page.

Hi 50 plussers,

Are any of you over 60 and based in the UK?

If so....you may be interested in a world record attempt I'm helping to organise in Shrewsbury in October.

It's likely to be an over 60's mixed ''large'' team (so as many as want to take part) 24 hour relay (so you can sleep and rest when not rowing) and anyone who wants to join in will be very welcome.

If anyone is interested could you let me know either on here or on the Diamonds team thread....thanks :)
67 year old, 72 kilo (159lbs), 5'8''/174cm (always the shortest on the podium!) male. Based just south of London.
Best rows as an over 60. One Hour.....16011 metres. 30 mins.....8215 metres. 100k 7hrs 14 mins.

Hi Rod,

How is your challenge coming along? Are enough people willing to get out of the covid lethargy?
(Sadly not as easy as I expected, I’ve noticed. 😟)

Not too bad thanks, plenty of names on the list so far, are you interested in joining in ?

I don’t think I can, being Dutch. (Not sure I would be up to it anyway...)

You don't have to be British to join in, I just asked about people based in the UK as the event is here but people of any nationality can take part.

If you're based in another country but prepared to travel to the UK for the event then great we'll make you very welcome.

You can be of any standard too, anyone over 60 can be in the team. :D

Hope too. Slowly reintegrating back on erg after scalene radial nerve injury ruined my summer. 🤗

Thanks for putting this team together. I'm totally new to rowing, and I just got my rower last week and have really enjoyed it. Looking forward to participating in this challenge.

I have been rowing for just a couple months. I just looked at the challenges and it led me to this team. Very cool. I have joined the team and the Fall challenge. It looks like it added my 5k from today.
