Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
Trouble is Rod, i have (stupidly!) decided not to row a 100k but to do 115,972m, either way, be interesting to see how i can do, i never set out to do anything other than row the distance, but always want to do th e best i can, would never be happy with just getting to the end unless i knew i had tried my hardest.
The 60K in may will be interesting, up until starting Eddie's plan i was rowing at 2:17.5 23/24spm @150bpm which is c.85% HRmax over 20k without any issues, comfortably even.
I realize 20k is a long way short of the 100k but who knows, ill keep plugging away and see where i end up, the long row is not until the end of the year so plenty of time to work our just how i can go.

Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
Mike – more perfect OCD scores. Excellent 354m for the 1 min TT, (a whole 100m better than what I can do) and nice work on the 10 x 1min 1r. Brilliant 3x2k r5. Nice surprise for the 2k challenge to go sub 7 minutes.
Glenn – I looked at the Eddie Fletcher marathon plan and soon came to the conclusion that I would never be able to manage all the sessions either physically or find the time. In the end I did a more homemade idea which never reached past 70k in a week and some weeks were only 25k which ended up as an average of 40k a week for 10 weeks. Wishing you all the best on the OMIL record – it took me a while to work that one out.
Rod - not sure if you are taking part in the World Indoors this week. I saw Carol's name and wishing her all the best.

I'm not doing it Susan, I'm training for a go at improving my British Record for the 60 mins of 16011m(1:52.4 pace) and really can't be doing with all this online faffing around but Carol is an IT expert so she's racing on Wednesday and says thank you for the kind wishes. Two Pudding Kid wrote: ↑February 21st, 2021, 5:57 pmRod - not sure if you are taking part in the World Indoors this week. Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
Hi Guys and gals, popped on board to have a look at my post post BRIC20 just to check if the race plan was the same as I remembered. Hopefully produce similar today.
Best of luck to Carol.
I wondered where you were Rod. Yep I'm considering similar, seriously thinking of having a break from 2k racing mainly as the pre race anxiety, self doubt, apprehension and fear of failure is all starting to wear thin now . I know it for what it is but I'm not getting any younger and really starting to think it's not worth the 2-3 day angst to me now at my time of life. Thinking of chasing after the 60min WR and 5kWR before I get too old and maybe they'll set me up for the 65-69 age group.
Anyway best of luck to all and stay safe

Really feel for you Richard (LGF)...must be gutting to have missed the start like that. I assume there was a technical glitch since no pics of your erg either. Tough to watch, but nothing to what you must be feeling. Chasing WRs in your own time has got to be more fun than that. Best of luck.
Also commiserations as well as congrats to Carol. Fantastic to get the Silver of course but I was sure she had it right to the last stroke and to miss by just 0.2s has got to be disappointing. Just have to make do with second IN THE WORLD - well done Carol.
No surprise that Marjorie absolutely dominated her race again winning by over 100m - many congrats on such a strong performance.
Also a season best time from Richard Steventon to secure 4th in the 65+ so very well done Richard.
Really good to watch - better presentation than they've managed hitherto - much enjoyed, so congrats to all taking part.

Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
Cheers Mike, yep probably my own fault for being too professional
The last two false starts I’ve been involved with at BRIC have taken an age to get restarted, mainly as all the erg flywheels are needed to stop again. Subsequently the 2nd time it happened I learnt to get off the erg and stretch a bit, as a bit of a self reset.
Not sure of the why’s and wherefores but on this occasion it appears there wasn't any time given for the flywheels to stop. I had literally just sat back on the erg after a quick stretch and was strapping myself in when I noticed ‘ROW’ staring at me from the monitor. (Not even sure there was any 'Get Ready' or 'Attention'). Hence my delayed start.
Whilst I started to hit my numbers I knew in my head that it was going to be a tight race and I could’nt get it out of my head that I’d just given the race and 3-4 seconds to the opposition. Hence the stopping and ‘Handle Down’.
I’m actually quite pleased with the numbers I was hitting, strapless at a low rate when I decided to finish the race though
Cest la vie, at least a couple of sub 6:40 times on the podium, would have been nice to have been there in the mix at the end but not the end of the world, the sun will still come up tomorrow. Not sure I'll race 2k again though, certainly for a while anyway
Unlucky Carol, great race and probably the closest of the day and unlucky to Richard S, could'nt quite hang on to 3rd. Did wonder what happend to George Perrin though as thought he would have been there or thereabouts at the death
Congratulations to Marjorie cracking win
Incidently, I actually disagree about the coverage. I think there was too much showing peoples garages, bedrooms etc. I feel the best view was the race on all the time on the left of screen and perhaps rotate a couple of rowers at home on the right.
All the best to all

Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
Actually I quite agree Richard. It was very frustrating at times not seeing the overall picture so important to have that on screen - as you said, but also enjoyed seeing the competitors underway, at it best for me when they put two side by side under the overall race screen especially if they were the two vying with each other for position. Most frustrating that the Australian that won Carol's race didn't appear anywhere on the screens at all so if the commentators hadn't mentioned her, it would have looked like Carol won by a country mile. There were still a fair few gaffs and wrong calls in commentary (Andrew Banks instead of Andy Benko!?!?!?) but a huge improvement on BRIC so its all heading in the right direction. They had better bio's on those taking part and appeared a little more knowledgeable about the sport - Martin more so than Camilla.le grand fromage wrote: ↑February 24th, 2021, 11:38 am

Glad you're not feeling too bad. Will expect to see you back at it in two or three years when you hit 65.......if not before!

I have to be philosophical about it, it was my own fault really although I will be dropping World rowing a line on it sometime as they should cover restart procedures. It's easy in a hall where everyone can be seen and told what to do at the same time but online it's not so easy. I also assumed, as well as waiting for the flywheel to stop, there would be some sort of stewards enquiry as to the culprit as I know in the handbook they state that 2 false starts and you're out, but that did'nt happen either as it was never announced who the guilty party was, might have been me for all I know . (don't think it was though)
Worse thing was the immediate guilty feeling of letting down the family who were there, but as usual they were full of support.
Anyway woke up this morning and started looking for training for 60' WR so can't be in too bad a place
Looked at my final 1k from yesterday, did a 3:26 (1:43.0 pace), strapless at 25/26 spm so obviously a bit pi$$ed off

Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
My feelings exactly Rich, after winning BRIC in 2018 I didn't feel in the slightest like trying to it again as like you I'd had enough of the whole thing and wanted to get on with what for me is far more enjoyable which is having a go at the longer distances. I'm more suited to endurance and it brasses me off that the championships are all over 2k which is not my best distance, why can't we have a BRIC for 10k at least?le grand fromage wrote: ↑February 24th, 2021, 6:26 amI wondered where you were Rod. Bad luck with that start, it looks like they need to look at how they did that as it wasn't right from the sound of it.
Good luck with the 60 mins record, if you're looking for a plan I can recommend working with Eddie...he's worked wonders with me and I'll be happy to introduce you to him if you like.
Carol says thank you for the kind words Mike, she's understandably not best pleased with 2nd but happy with the time and was going as fast as she could so some you win...some you lose but she'll be back....maybe not in the next one as she's probably going to try other distances for a while but will be back as like Richard I'm thinking of doing BRIC and WRIC when I'm in the 65-69 Lwt's which will be December 2022 for the British then of to Toronto in Feb 2023 for the worlds so she'll do those too.....I'll still hate having to do 2k's though!

I can vouch for that too, Eddie has been very helpful with my efforts to date.
Am halfway through week 4 of the marathon plan with a view to a 60k 23/05 before the push to my 'final' effort towards the end of the year assuming the 60k goes 'ok'.
Edit: PS should we have an endurance rowers thread somewhere ?

Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
Rod - best wishes for breaking your own British Record for the 60 minutes, and hope the future plans for BRIC and Worlds when you turn 65 come to fruition. If I hadnt seen your explanation I wouldnt have realised that Carol was pipped to the post - but congratulations are in order anyway. If there was a 10k ergo contest in the UK I would be up for it - much that I like skipping off to Germany and Finland to do this sort of thing it would be much more convenient for a home grown event.
Richard - I was rather concerned that you had strained something when I noticed that you werent showing up in the race display. Although really annoying that you didnt get your shot at glory at least you didnt have to spend financially to get to Paris. Success at the 5k and 60 minute World Records would be fantastic achievement.
Glenn - with the indoor ergo season finished I expect a few people will be up for the marathon and longer over the May to August period. With Concept2 running a challenge for 42195m from May 1-14 and Fitness Matters doing one in July or August online, (not sure whether the Finnish one is going virtual) maybe there will be some posting on your new thread. Great result in surpassing the £5000 mark for fundraising.
Me - only getting 1 hour a week of ergo training so sticking with the challenges in the main. Did 30 mins Rate 20 this week and achieved 6432m at 2:19.9 average which I was pleased with and only 17m less than this time last year when I was much fitter. Nice weather for outdoor ergo this Friday.

Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
You're doing very well off just one erg a week Susan, so must be supplementing with other exercise as you always do. Hopefully not too much longer 'til you're allowed back in your Gym.
I'm continuing as normal, but as the days stay lighter and the weather improves I'm finding it harder to stop whatever I'm doing in time to get in the gym before dinner. Will have to watch that once the clocks change! Latest from me:
19/2 4x1k 3:30r. 1:47.9/8/7 and 1:46.2 last for a 1:47.4 avg which is the same as last time. Good.
20/2 5x2k 2r with rate and pace pyramid 20/22/24/22/20 2:02/2:00/1:56/2:00/2:02. Close but only 1 spot on for a 12/18 OCD screen score.
21/2 Dumbbells and 8k @ 20 spm in 33:03.2
23/2 30 mins varipace 1:53>2:02 and back and back for 7667m
24/2 8x500m 3:30r. Last time 1:41.4 avg pace, this time 1.40.9. Nearly as good as I get at this so happy with that.
25/2 Dumbbells and 8k @ 20 spm in 33:03.2
26/2 5k SS target 2:06 but only one split spot on for 11/18 OCD screen score
27/2 5x2k 2r @ 20 spm target 8:08 reps. Only one spot on for another 11/18 score.
28/2 Dumbbells and 8k @ 20 spm in 33:03.3 Spot on!
1/3 Supposed to be a sprint session, so started a 16x250 90"r but was struggling from the off despite starting 1sec slower than I usually do - 1:39.0 avg pace. After 4x I knew I'd never do another 12 so stopped and swapped to a 20 min Varipace session from1:53>2:01 and back. Even had a wobble in that but got going again and hit my 5115m target.

Re: Sub 7 Indoor Rowing Club (UK)
Me - Friday was brrrrr............ Just couldnt hit the 6k properly and slipped off the 2:14 intended pace before halfway. Not sure if the cold got me breathing harder than normal but it wasnt happening that I could pull back even ramping up to 28spm. Final result 26:56.0 and 2:14.7 pace. Only redeeming feature was that I was under 27:02 that I set 2 weeks back for the 3 x 2kr5. Today was either 8 or 9 repeats (lost track of where I was) of 30 mountain climbers, 10 partial pressups, 30 star jumps and 25 sit to stand. Tomorrow will hopefully be a walk/jog and another go at the 5 sets of pressups with 90 secs rest, (33 in total is the target). Next Friday ergo should be the 1k concept2 challenge and a manic minute. Would love the gyms to open so that I can get a more regular ergo, particularly in the early part of the week.
Mike - good work on the 4 x 1k 3:30r and the 8 x 500m 3:30r. Excellent news to hit the magic 33:03.3 for 8k again.
