our forum is now one of a growing number of sites that offers what is called a 'rss feed'. RSS allows for easy browsing of new forum topics without having to actually visit the site. How can you test this?<br /><br />1. use google.com/news<br />Create a custom google page and simply add concept2.ipbhost.com to your content and the most recent forum postings will automatically appear (refreshed every 15 minutes)<br /><br />2. On firefox and some other browswers when you bookmark the forum the live 'rss' content is automatically brought in - so that when you mouse down to the bookmark, live content headlines appear.<br /><br />3. you can also use some free applications to create a virtual rss reader www.bloglines.com is one such.<br /><br />-bill

I use a Firefox extension called <a href="http://sage.mozdev.org/" target="_blank">Sage</a>, which I can recommend as a good entry point to RSS. It's a free browser component that adds a special newsfeed Sidebar. I don't think the C2 forum has the requisite <link> tag necessary for Firefox to auto-detect the RSS feed with it's orange statusbar icon. <br /><br />To add the C2 forum to my Sage feeds, I did the following.<br />1: Left-click on the orange RSS box in the bottom left of the forum <br />2: Click on the 'Concept2TrainingForum' popup link that appears<br />** Firefox will display a page of formatted XML (gibberish to you, perhaps)<br />3: From the Bookmarks menu, select 'Bookmark this page'<br />4: In the 'Name' box type 'Concept2 Forum'<br />5: In the 'Create in' box select 'Sage Feeds'<br /><br />You can now access the C2 forum from the Sage sidebar (Alt + S). The feed seems to have all of the recently updated topics. It a pretty nice addition.<br /><br />Mike

mike - can you give me any more info on the <link> tag? i looked through the documentation for ipb and can't find any reference - for firefox i just added the bookmark - and it automatically accesses the rss feed to display headlines under the bookmark.<br /><br />-bill<br /><br /><!--quoteo(post=55835:date=Feb 14 2006, 10:13 AM:name=haboustak)--><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><div class='genmed'><b>QUOTE(haboustak @ Feb 14 2006, 10:13 AM) </b></div></td></tr><tr><td class='quote'>I use a Firefox extension called <a href="http://sage.mozdev.org/" target="_blank">Sage</a>, which I can recommend as a good entry point to RSS. I've recently upgraded to Firefox 1.5, and they've moved the RSS icon into the address bar. The C2 forum page does have a proper link tag, and the orange RSS icon works properly (as long as you know where to look for it. ) Clicking on the orange icon in the address bar yields Firefox's 'Add Live bookmark' dialog.<br /><br />For reference, here's what the RSS code in the IPB source looks like:<br /><!--c1--><table width='95%' cellspacing='1' cellpadding='3' border='0' align='center'><tr><td><b><div class='genmed'>CODE</div></b></td></tr><tr><td class='code'><div><!--ec1--><br /><link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="Concept2TrainingForum" href="http://concept2.ipbhost.com/index.php?act=rssout&id=1" /><br /><!--c2--></div></td></tr></table><br /><br />Mike

I have set up the live bookmark on Firefox (pretty easy once I knew thats what the icon was up in the address bar).<br /><br />So there is sits in my Bookmarks toolbar and when I click on it I can see a list of threads and choose to open one, some, or all in tabs.<br /><br />How do these compare to those results that would turn up if I went to the site and clicked 'View New Posts'.<br /><br />tks George

ben:<br /><br />1. first step is to create a 'custom page' in google (apologies if you've already done so - this will be for others reading this post)<br />From google.com click in the upper right hand corner "personalize this page" and follow the instructions<br /><br />2. from your 'custom google page' you add content<br />under the 'create a section' there is a field for 'search by topic or feed url'. Enter <a href="http://concept2.ipbhost.com" target="_blank">http://concept2.ipbhost.com</a> into this field.<br /><br />3. You'll then see concept2 training forum appear in your page. clicking 'edit' next to this link will allow you to choose the number of threads or news items you wish to see.<br /><br />Please let me know how you make out - as there are probably others trying to do the same. In answer to the question about 'new topics' - i've set the rss feed to update every 15 minutes - so it should reflect a fairly current 'new topic' view.<br /><br />-bill<br /><br /><br /><!--quoteo(post=55915:date=Feb 15 2006, 06:33 AM:name=Ben Rea)--><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><div class='genmed'><b>QUOTE(Ben Rea @ Feb 15 2006, 06:33 AM) </b></div></td></tr><tr><td class='quote'>i did everything it says for google, this is all i get evrytime i click on the tab....<br /><br /><br />Your search - concept2.ipbhost.com - did not match any documents.<br /> </td></tr></table><br />
