Well done Max, nice gains.

Who do you think is mostly likely to win TDS with out knowing Clapp’s 2k submission?
Think Freddy Sm. Don’t expect Clapp to break the 2k Wr and on the 10k I also don’t expect a big gap.
I think it’s hard to tell with Clapp’s 2k, especially as he doesn’t post his training as much like Smulter. I guess that Clapp will break sub 6. This comment will either age like fine wine or like milk

500 freddy was faster, 5k was a draw, 2k inbetween, so I place Clapp a tad slower. He used to have the Wr 6.01 ish.
Potentialy both Smulter and Clapp could be a good bit faster even. They are both not fully trained, and both freaks of nature. Although very different.

Potentially quite a few top ergers and skiergers could be faster especially in Clapp's case, it's mental to think that he does most of this for "fun".

The man is a giant, so although absolutely he is very good, pound for pound less.

Topergers are almost always top otw people who train at olympic levels and therefore are much closer to their potential. So no topergers could not be much faster.

Fair enough, it's such a shame Clapp had a back injury when young, could've been a real menace OTW as he certainly was as a junior.

This was a row that didn't go to plan.

The plan was a reasonably fast 30r20 with a 165BPM HR cap. Then the HR monitor cacked out at about the 4 minute point.

So I went for a 30r20 PB, with 8500m being the target. I really nearly put the handle down at all the standard intervals: 12 min, 15 min, 5k, 20 min, 6k, 25 min.

Anyway, got there in the end, but it's probably best that I didn't know my heart rate.

116m onto my 30r20 PB and 98m off my free rate PB.

Nice J, your free rate 30’ needs some attention now

Well done for powering through, many would have given up before and called it a day.

Thanks Freddie :D

I shall have a go at the free rate 30 when I'm fairly confident of getting at least 8700m. 8750m would be nice.

Thanks Jo Andre. It was accidental really, mostly due to my HR monitor failing. Nice work on your sub 17m 5k too btw.

Nice one Max and indeed a good bit better than your 5k, so you are rapidly improving, and so you should  Over time you will be able to rate higher.
I have the same as you, I look at others, and think how the hell can they be so much faster :D

Re ski month, this is a good way of forcing you/us to dig in. Having a goal helps to push yourself.
Thanks Henry,
Yeah, this month is quite a motivator. Next year I will try to train beforehand - there's not much that we can do to prepare within the month. Only the 10k left now.

Thanks Freddie,
No idea TBH. I have got it all worked out yet, but I suspect that being really tall (and Clapp is really tall) isn't an advantage on the SkiErg. It changes the leverages, and I think means that the triceps and not the lats will do more of the upper body work.

Well done on your skierg 2k PB, that's a great improvement and good to know there's still something left for next time! :D
I haven't tried a skierg , but hopefully can test one soon, would be a great addition to my training room and propably suit me well.
Thanks Martin,
Your physiology (very strong, but not too tall) is closer to the elite SkiErgers than it is to elite rowers, so I suspect you'd do very well indeed, and with experience, perhaps faster than you are on the rower. It's different from rowing because a lot of work is done (i.e. wasted) on the recovery and there's a real premium on being able to put a lot of force in at the start of the pull (although rates are still a lot higher).

I do think though that it'd be very hard to train seriously on both the rower and skierg - there just aren't enough hours in the day or days in the week to do justice to both.

Very strong indeed. Being a big unit, your free rate isn't exactly going to be 30+spm, but only 98m difference really does show that you should test it again soon.

Wouldn’t say it’s quite an all out effort. But I did my second 30R20 today. Last week I only averaged 1:58.2. This week I did 7908m @ 1:53.8 average. The last 2 weeks have a few workouts have emphasis of pulling hard and as a small lightweight I have to get used to it. 8k next time!

Continuing to mine the "Tour de SkiErg" newby gains seam.

2k PB.

7:43.8 2,000m 1:55.9 225 1072 40

1:56.8 500m 1:56.8 220 1055 37

1:53.6 2,000m 1:53.6 239 1121 44

Looks like I knew what I was doing! Tough and had to spend some time lying down after, but I didn't have that all-consuming vomit-inducing muscle-burning lactate accumulation. Probably could have gone a bit quicker, then.

Had half an eye on trying to be within a minute of Henry's amazing time, but didn't quite make that. Comparisons are the thief of joy and all that, but this is by a country mile my best SkiErg effort.
Well done Max. This does look like a great strategic ski.

On one hand knowing you could have gone faster is a bit frustrating, but it's also encouraging as you have a seed of hope that you will go faster next time.
