Forearm Soreness

Post by winniewinser » December 16th, 2020, 2:28 am

I've noticed, probably since SRIC/BRIC, that my forearms are getting really sore after any sessions at the moment. It feels muscular more than anything and is mainly around my elbow area. Working from my watch to my elbow the muscle on the top is tight/sore.

I don't feel like I'm gripping too hard, but undoubtedly did during the 2k races. Short of taking more rest any thoughts on what is causing it?

If may be that the increase in sessions combined with recent racing is the problem but I never had issues prior to SRIC.

Thoughts?

I had about the same problem about 2 years ago, my right forearm got overstressed and I had to almost pause for a few weeks.
I estimate it's your increased hard training, more strain and less recovery.
I I were you I would skip the next hard training and have 2 rest days to see how it feels, better a short break now than a long break later. You can partly switch to cycling or running till it's 100% OK. Soft stretching and massage also helped me.

Thanks Martin.....rest day today and then not rowing again til tomorrow night so will see how it feels before that.

It's a tricky area to stretch.

I've had this issue over the years and still do. PT is the only thing that works for me. Light forearm PT, it helps get blood into the area so it can heal, recover and strengthen. If you end up with a major flare up like i've had, it can be a bugger to completely get rid of.

Thanks.

I stretched a lot yesterday and will continue to do that.

I have noticed that it's also painful around my elbow joint.

Thumb side would be tennis elbow.....little finger side, golfers elbow. Mine ocassionally flares up....anti-inflammatory meds, ice & wearing an elbow sleeve helps. Erging? Best to rest it, but if you must....cut volume & intensity, lower drag factor, change grip. I prefer thumbs on top of handles. Underhand grip also works.

One other thing - years ago when I had this pain initially I switched my grip to have thumb on top. Helps a lot. That was a suggestion from the members on the old C2 Forum.

That kind of issue is often trigger point related.

Was watching a video yesterday talking about final sprints in a 2K. The people were pulling under 1:20, and they were (1) short stroking their knees and (2) pulling way early with their arms to get an earlier catch. At 40+ strokes/min the chain was bouncing so most (not all) needed the early arm pull then they held their arm angle bent throughout the drive.

Any chance you were doing heavy duty sprinting at SRIC/BRIC ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3J5rcyZMTuw

Yep.....BRIC was an all out fight at the end and I was holding on, literally, for dear life! So no doubt that may be part of the issues. I've also been doing quite a lot of fast sprint intervals that need a similar approach.

I've been icing it with a wine cooler collar  ......useful shape for your arms. Also been rolling it daily and it seems to be improving.

Thx

Have you got a massage gun? Amazon do some good deals, and I got one for about £45 and it's great. My forearm was starting to hurt a bit a week or two ago, and it really helped. Obviously, it won't be much help if it's a strain

Was actually looking to get one of those but yet to select one. Which one did you get?
