My HM time was low hanging fruit for me. Happy that it was Team Oarsome's January challenge (otherwise I wouldn't have done it)

This is still a beatable time for me, but the fruit is hanging much higher now:

1:14:27.9 /// 21097 /// 1:45.8 /// 23spm
3000 / 146.3
6000 / 146.2
9000 / 146.1

15000 / 148.6
18000 / 145.8
21000 / 143.2
21097 / 134.3

Holy smokes Cam, that is a brilliant time :D big congrats!!
Thanks, I actually owe my time to you a little bit. I mentioned to Stu that I didn't know if the weight I gained might slow me down over these longer distances and he reminded me of your hm time. It helped to inspire me!
Good to hear that I can be assistant in superb performances :D A lot of your PB's are very low hanging fruit now, the 17k 60 min is nothing but a formality, I would assume your current potential to be somewhere around 17300-17500?

It's mad that even in what is an extremely fast time, there is obvious room for improvement (thinking about the 1:48 split in the middle - had it been a 1:45 like the rest, you'd be another 18 seconds up).

Indeed, looks like a new Benton popped up. Who pulled sub 6 in his first year and got in the low 5.40 ies. Started younger though.

Yeah, I'm very curious to see what he can achieve, not only for 2k, but also (especially) 1k and 500m.
Looking at his background and his relative short rowing history: If he can go sub 5:50 2k, maybe even mid/low 5:40 and can stay (almost) as strong as he is now he may be able to challenge the current 1k WR (if you read this Cam: no preassure  ), but you can estimate this much better than me for sure.

Agree, saw his 2k clip pb and that looked good, although Cam said it was very rough.

Re 500/1k, Cam said he liked the longer work more and looking at his build I can see why, to me he does not come over as typical sprinter/powerlifter. Much more a allround and even aerobic build.
Don’t know how long he is erging now, but really think he has indeed much potential. From memory, Benton also started from a gym background and was more a sprintertype which changed once he started to train with a coach. B. also tried otw rowing, but that never really worked out. Don’t know why, but could be his relative older age.

German, Olly Ziedler did manage to very rapidly get the hang of otw rowing. So its not impossible.

Anyway, just like you curious how this will go, Cam is one of the most talented guys that I have seen come up. Once before a crossfit guy did roughly the same, also pulled sub 6 in his first winter, but he stopped I believe.

Any idea what this guy’s name was Henry? He must have gone onto to do big things in CrossFit/another sport as he pulled sub 6 in his first winter

Yeah, I agree he looks like an allround athlete, but he also posted that he'll go for "the short fast stuff that he's built for".
He once posted that he lost a lot of weight since his powerlifting days, a quick google search shows that he holds the Canadian Junior records for (raw) Squat (305), deadlift (287,5) and total (762,5) at ca. 130kg bodyweight, maybe even stronger in the open class

He reminds me a bit of Jason Marshall who also came with a bang, soon got sub 6 (recently sub 5:50), built like a tank but nevertheless his fitness is even more impressive than his power.

Let's lean back and see what's coming!

@ Olli: I hope he'll finally beat the 2k WR, and hopefully will try a 100% 1k someday. I saw a (german) documentary about Olli not long ago, his trainers and teammates pointed out that he's not only super fit, but also incredibly strong for a rower, perfect for an incredible 1k effort :)

Not from memory, he was a Forum flyer though and he did some ctc s. Think 5/7 year ish ago.

Being a good rower, does not perse translate to crossfit I think, for rowing height and slow fiber muscle are key.
Also, think he was “older” as in 30 ish, life gets in the way, you got to make a living, family etc..

Cheers, those are serious numbers.

Re Olly, the point with olympic rowers a bit is, that in peakshape they row otw, so what they really can do could stay hidden.

Same with a Dutch guy from the Holland 8, pulled 5.36 but they now use the row perfect, thats the sponsor, he pulled 5.28? from memory. Not 100% comparable, but still very strong.

Interesting! Does this mean that the Dutch & other Europeans are moving away from the C2 to the RP3? I'm assuming that the price differential between the two is 1:4 between C2 & RP3 like it is in the States? Or being in the EEC the pricing is more attractive?

Rp is much more expensive, also here. But if your sponsor is brand A, that sponsor maybe does not like to see you using brand B.
And the RP is simply better, certainly for otw people. The Holland 8 is going for gold/medals so ergo results are a bit less important.

On a sidenote... over we have the 2meter rule covid related, so the rowers could not use the 8 s or 4 s, seats are to close, pretty bizar imo.

Pretty much went to plan until the final 500m where i was hoping to really kick into gear but today my legs had nothing. They were searing! So Sub 6.20 will have to wait but very happy with a 3 second PB and i can enjoy Christmas now!
