Yet Another Model B Project
Hello, I just bought a Model B and wanted to post photos and solicit advice on which parts to replace or upgrade. I defiantly want to buy the retrofit PM5 however, when I go to check out in the online store I am advised to select the model I am upgrading and the Model B is the only model not listed. Can anyone advise if the retrofit kit will install and if so, which model should I select? Also, I am planning on buying the flex foot retrofit kit. Any other suggested improvements? I read in another post a suggestion to buy the wind damper ring B kit...does anyone have any experience with how difficult that is to replace and what benefit it will produce? Thanks in advance for your advice! (I tried to upload photos, but the files were too large).

Look through this section of the forum and search for posts on Model B; there are several posts about these models, including some very recent ones.
I have one, and just ordered the PM-5 last week for it. Also got the flex foot upgrade (my wife is interested in trying this, and this upgrade will make it easier to let multiple users adjust foot position over the stock foot boards, I hope). Also got the casters for it; I have an older set I bought for it when I first bought this one 12-15 years ago, but I like the looks of these newer ones. Are the chain and shock cord in good shape? They still support this model, and have a lot of parts to keep them in good order for years to come. Call them if unsure of what you need, their customer service is very good.
As to a speed ring, many here have made their own. Rubber inner tube and roofing paper appear to be the favorite materials. I just did one for mine a month or so ago, using roofing paper. The results were very good.
Good luck!

If you are ordering other parts, I would recommend getting the speed ring. It is inexpensive, made of plastic, very easy to install and looks part of the rower (as opposed to a DIY look). It also has three adjustments that align with the Model C/D/E damper readings (there is a chart on Concept2 web site).
If this is the speed ring is the only part you need, it might make sense to do a DIY job as the shipping fee will be a large component of the cost of the ring.

Re: Yet Another Model B Project
Thanks for the responses! I have read many of the previous posts, but could not find any references to the retrokit upgrade PM5 question...specifically which model I should enter when ordering one. Based on previous responses, I will call Concept tomorrow to confirm. The chain, flywheel, sprockets are all in great shape...it appears the shookcord is also, but I don;t really know what I am looking for other than obvious wearing and fraying. I will take a look at the casters, although my machine won't much if at all.
With regard to the speed ring. Is this term interchangeable with damper? Mine has an adjustable ring positioned on the right side of the flywheel cage...is there a different device I should add?
Thanks again everyone!

Re: Yet Another Model B Project
There is a PM5 retrofit for all models (A/B/C/D). Since you have a Model B you should get one for Model B.
The speed ring is same as damper. It allows you to control the airflow into the flywheel. Based on your description, it looks like you already have one.
