60 minute erg test today. Haven't done a max effort hour before, so went semi-conservative and picked 1:54 at r26. Taped over the HR display so couldn't see the 185+ HR for the last 25 mins

60:00.0 / 15836m / 1:53.6 / 238w / r26 / 180 HR / DF106
10:00.0 / 2609m / 1:54.9 / 230w / r26 / 169 HR

Awesome meters for an hour!
Good luck with the 16 km - that is a fair bit more.

Very nice, that HR for that long is very tough to maintain. Big notable neg splits too.

A modest 2000m pb this evening on what was a training row with a bit of a push at the end.

Nominally, I had intended to do 2 sets of 2k, one at 6:40 and the other 6:50. Needing to hold 1:40/500m on the first, I was a little ahead of schedule into the last 400m of so so I pushed it a bit for 6:33.9 for a 6.2 second pb. I followed it up with a 6:43.1 afterwards, which was again a little faster than required.

Not max effort at all, so I reckon there is another 7-10 seconds in there, if my life were to depend on it. My biggest challenge is not talking myself out of these attempts as they aren't pleasant!

Hey Jon,

Just a thought: As you know, I share your challenge. And, you know the strategy i have for my attempt next week.

What do you think about shifting your aim a little next time? Rather than aim for a PB 2k (not that you were intending on that this time) you aimed to see how long you can hold a certain split for? No pressure that way.

You could pull 1:35 and see if you can hold it for 1,500. If that goes well, try to pull 250 more, etc. No failing this way, just curiously learning how long you can hold something for?

Alternatively . . . you can just keep doing what you're doing and smashing PBs without bothering ever testing anything - that seems to be working pretty damn well for you, too!

That's a very good idea. It's sneaky though, as the chances are that I could come close to holding it for the full two thousand metres, but I'd be coughing up a lung at the end of it and cursing the very day you were born for suggesting it!

I had dinner repeating on me a bit last night and had tweaked my knee the night before trying to squat (my patella tendonitis is just about gone, but my right knee is still quite fragile). On a good day 6:25 is already there, but I lack the mental strength

I will try the holding of the split at some point, but for now, incrementally chipping away at times is working. I just need to make sure I get the metres in - I think this week I've done 26k so far, which is about the most I've done in a week so far.

Crushed my HM PB by almost a minute with a 1:19:19!

After Stu's crushing of a couple HMs I said I needed to do one and shoot to break 1:20 - so decided to give it a try yesterday. This may be my biggest shock of a PB ever as I crushed the one I did just a couple months ago and I hadn't tapered or anything - just did CTC and another hard row Thursday. Then I think I had quite a bit more. Though I always start out too fast, that was my plan for this HM. I decided I would do the first 10K at a 1:52 pace and then I could do the rest at a 1:55ish and beat the 1:20 goal. Well, I went even faster for the first 10K and then did OK in the third 5K and was actually right at 1:52 thru 15K. Here I did slow to 1:55 even though I was doing OK, I was tired and hurting but OK. I did start to get the mind games telling me to stop but seeing on the monitor that I could actually fall to an even slower pace and break 1:20 I knew I could hang on. I stayed conservative until very end but then was pulling in the 1:30s for last few hundred meters. When done I was tired and in typical discomfort but not devastated. So, I could have started going faster sooner or I could have held to more like a 1:53/1:54 in the 4th 5K. I never beat a PB by this much and also not felt crushed - again, a couple days after a two hard rows....makes no sense but I will take it!

So many mind games going on in a HM, and it is really hard to know when you're being far too optimistic.

Sometimes there is no logic to it, but it's just meant to be, and having that motivation knowing that you've got a target to beat always helps. Your FM PB spurred me on to give mine another go.

I think you can get this sub 79 minutes next time now you are armed with the confidence you've got now. Great result mate

Yeah, it's weird, having the target of Sub 1:20 helped me a lot but also might had me hold back at the 15K mark as I knew I was going to hit it at the slower pace. I considered picking up the pace at one point but then was a little worried as it was unchartered territory for me and didn't want to blow up. Like in the marathon I had "waves" of feeling like I wanted to stop along with ones of thinking I had this no problem.
