PM5 crashing during a call, BT issue?

Post by pavlonjablon » December 15th, 2020, 8:37 am

Hi guys,

I'm rowing on a D model with PM5 for almost a year now. Running ErgData on an iPhone SE 2020 connected to PM5 through BT while listening to music on my BT headphones.

About three times during the training, I received a call on my phone. This caused the PM5 to go crazy, showing all kinds of numbers on the screen, sort of like a system failure or Matrix opening titles. I unfortunately didn't make a photo of the screen. The worst thing was that I had to reset the PM5 with Menu button and my whole training didn't get saved. I will, from now on, put my phone into DND mode; however, did any one of you stumble upon similar behavior?

Thanks

I am the PM5 firmware developer and Citroen brought this post to my attention. I just want to clarify something about your observations. You are saying that the PM5 workout display showed erratic pace, stroke rate, etc. while the call was in progress? Or did the PM5 hard fault and dump a bunch of values to the screen? When you say that you reset the PM5 with the Menu button, was this in response to the hard fault dump?

I have tried to reproduce this with an Android phone with no success, and next I will be trying an iPhone Xr.

Thanks...Mark

I've just updated my firmware to v169 on pm5.

I connect my android phone, then i connect my fenix 5x.

When i do this - it seems like the text for the heart rate connection is overlaid over each other. This resolves when i press the button.

Just flagging in case it helps.

I assume the Fenix 5 connection is for heart rate and that you make this connection by going to Connect->Connect Heart Rate on the PM5. You then select the Fenix 5 HR from the list and then confirm the connection. When and on which screen to you see the overlaid text? Can you send me an image?

I don't think this is related to the report about a phone call impacting the workout display on the PM5.

Hi Mark,

The PM5 display showed all the values OK during the workout, pace, stroke rate etc, all were perfectly correct. Up until the moment the phone started ringing, which I heard in my headphones as well on my Apple Watch. This brought the PM5 to a hard fault and showed a bunch of weird values on the screen. The whole workout was lost at this moment, I had to restart the PM5 with the Menu button to bring it back to the main menu. It also wasn't saved in the Workouts PM5 memory.

This fault didn't happen during all calls; however, every time it happened, it was during a call — three times already.

Thanks

Pavel

Hi mlyon, i will take a photo for you. I thought on an un informed basis that the phone bt and the watch were some how competing for the same line on the screen.

I put my phone in flight mode while using the rower.

Why would you want to try and take a call while rowing ? If you can speak normally while rowing your not going fast enough.

The current ErgData implementation gets all its workout data as a push from the PM5. You may be describing an error in the PM5 user interface functionality that is incorrectly overwriting text. An image would be very helpful.

Hi , I am starting to get crashes now on bluetooth which is odd.

I'd love to share a screenshot but the image is too large at 753kb.

You can send me anything directly at mlyon@updesigns.com.

Please include what has changed and the as many specifics as possible on how and when the crashes occur. Also the mobile device type being used.

Hi Mark

If it helps I get this also and it's totally reproducible. Will drop you the photo.

Setup:
1. Ergdata on android (kindle) set up to auto connect to PM5 via bluetooth
2. Heart rate monitor data stored in Ergdata for automatic connection.
3. Heart rate monitor active
4. Ergdata off
4. PM5 off

Reproduce:
1. Turn on PM5 with menu button
2. Hit button on PM5 to get to connect menu. Connect menu will show "ready for connection" and Heart Rate Monitor disconnected.
3. Start Ergdata on android (kindle)
4. <ergdata will connect to PM5> Ergdata shows PM5 connected. PM5 connect panel shows Ergdata connected. HRM is still shown as disconnected.
5. <HRM info in Ergdata allows PM5 to discover and connect to the HRM> PM5 connect panel now shows HRM status as "Connected" overlaying "disconnected". Both texts are visible overlaying each other.
6. All HRM function works. All PM5 and Ergdata function works. If I clear the screen (ex, hit menu button to get to main menu and then hit connect button to return to connect panel) then the HRM shows correctly as "connected".
