Thanks, Shaun. I am, indeed, lusting after a cushier bike seat ... but, I don't know if I'd be any further out in orbit.

While You're Erging....

Post by Kona2 » December 12th, 2020, 11:58 am

Some years ago, AJ our resident artist, rigged up a clip to his rowing machine so he could work on the Suduko puzzles while erging. I think he may have moved on to Netflix as an alternative, but you never know.

Ergers by definition can withstand a lot of repetition and solitary work. Some of us listen to audiobooks. But wait....there's another "addiction" to add to the mix. You can strive to achieve Queen (or King I guess) Bee status.

The New York Times online publishes a daily puzzle called Spelling Bee (you can do it for free I think). The objective is to make as many words as you can out of the hive...and you must always include the letter in the middle of the hive that's colored yellow. As you enter your trove of words, you will see your designation go from good, to nice, to great, to amazing, and maybe you'll even find all the ones that are available and be a Queen Bee. There is always at least one word in the collection that is a pangram (there's the thing that made me look up this puzzle...it's a word that uses ALL the letters that are listed in the daily puzzle).

Image

Image
Today's puzzle...so far, I have found 35 words and am amazing (snort).

Obviously, if you are working hard on form and doing time trials, you may not want to do these sorts of things while erging. But. There are a lot of times when you are getting in some long meter sessions, and your mind can wander. I am going to try clipping a piece of paper to my bike erg, and writing down puzzle words as they come to me.

Perhaps some of you will find this of interest. I surely know that you are competitive enough. :D

Goodness, I can't begin to imagine the conditions encountered in a ride across a frozen lake on a studded fat tire-d bike, in Alaska! That's achingly beautiful, but ... bucket list? I gotta say, no. I'll stay on my bike in my tv room, watching movies!

Do any of you bike ergers have a comfy bike seat that you've purchased, and could recommend? I find that around 14,000 meters, I start losing feeling in my nether regions ...
even with a padded seat, and padded bike shorts. It's certainly not from a lack of personal padding, either. (I remember that bike seats were discussed, when we first started getting bikeErgs. Apologies for not bookmarking.)
I believe me and one other have the Bikearoo seat. I paid way too much at 150 bucks. It feels nice but I still get numb after 15 to 20 minutes. Not all the time but it still happens. I just stand on the peddles or the floor when this happens until I have sensation again. I even tried a gel seat pad that fit the C2 seat perfectly but it didn’t help me at all. A bit too soft I think. Janice does not like the Bikearoo. I think it’s too soft for her and she had other issues. When she gets back to riding again we will order a second post ($45) from C2 so I can just switch out seats as needed. I’ve been rowing for 16 to 20 minutes and then hop on the bike for the same time. Then I might do this 2 or 3 times.
