How many here row with a fan consistently?
I have a ceiling fan over my erg. I typically turn it on high to move some air when rowing. Never thought about adding one up front.

I never erg without one, even when I set up on the balcony (well, this morning's 2C stupidity was an exception).
40 winters of plugging away on beater bikes mounted on various sorts of indoor trainers taught me that evaporative cooling is where it's at. Any kind of indoor endurance training, you need to get a whole lot of air moving over you.

I use a cheap (~$14 USD) 20” box fan. It works well enough for me.

In my training room I always have the ceiling fan on and 1 fan blowing on my back, for TTs I add another 2 (all small, around 15 inch).
Outdoor the same when it's >15°C, now in winter no fan for UT2 and 1 for harder pieces.

I’ve always sweated easily. On one hand, there are toxins which leaves your body through sweating, but also, important mineral salts are lost too. I guess it’s about balance. Not sure what that is. I row in my under-crackers and even at this time of year when it’s 13c indoors, I was still soaked during my 8k yesterday. Not to the point of a puddle on the floor.
I live by myself, so I’ve only had the heating on a couple of times since the beginning of autumn. I live in north east England, so it’s fairly cool compared to the southern parts. My wife was a cold person and had the heating well up, under-crackers again! ;o)

Are you in the N or S hemisphere? I ask because I have to wonder how much cooling power you need, especially if it's winter where you are currently (which I'm guessing it is). Are you erging someplace that's particularly warm, even in the winter, or do you have a problem overheating even in moderate temps?
I'll admit that I probably keep my house cooler than most, but in the winter I find low humidity to be a bigger issue than overheating. At most, a gently breeze to stir things up a bit is all I need, if anything. In the summer having some good airflow definitely helps.
I guess I'm suggesting that you be sure you match the fan's CFM range (or whatever the metric equivalent is where you are) to what you need. No sense in getting way more than what the job requires.

I bought one of these a few years ago. I row in the garage and live in the desert, so an evaporative cooler was a little nicer than just blowing hot air in the summer. Fan works great alone in the cooler months.

I recently bought a misting fan. A regular fan just doesnt do much in my garage in Summer (here in Australia)
Im still figuring out best placement as at the moment i have it side on but it really dries my throat out (unless the misting part is on)

Something else to factor in is Humidity.
Its not all just about high temperature because if you combine that with high humidity the problems are compounded.
Have just moved from Auckland where its constantly 70 to 90% humidity, its bad !!!! down to the south of the country where I have seen never before figures on my humidity meter of 35%. Parts of the USA call 35% "High" so its all relative but here thats low.
What you will notice that just moving the air creates a cooling effect, the temperature meter drops a couple of degrees in the airflow. Bottom line is a fan makes a huge difference, especially when the ambient temperature heads towards 30 Deg C and over.
