Thanks chaps.

If it's possible for a 1:21 pace to feel comfortable, it did for about 200m. Felt I could have gone a bit faster at that point, but I was surprised how quickly I died off in the final quarter of the row!

I'm pretty happy with my times now, with my 2k being the softest, but I'm still fairly content with it.

Knuckling down and training is the order of the day now. There is only so far you can milk the newbie gains!
Those newby gains are certainly not over yet. And looking at your results you are not a sprinter, it looks very Allround. Given your build I do find this 500 even relative “soft”. Still it would surprice me if you did not pull a sub 1.20 soon. Both topspeed and fitness will improve.
Re dying, like the others said. 500 is roughly, 300m you feel ok, with to go you start thinking how can 80 seconds be so long. Last 75 meters, everything you have is needed, but still you will slow. Last stroke the slowest.
Those 1.10/12 guys often pull a plus 1.20 last stroke. But start off at sub 1.05 pace.

Great work Big J!
Fascinating to see how fast you improve, you'll soon have very few ergers here for a friendly competition :)
Right now we could challenge each other at the sprint events, but I'm working for the longer distances atm and when I'm back at the sprint stuff you're propably way too far away for a challenge

Totally right Jo Andre, 8500 is the next great milestone for some fellas here, Stu and Keith will hopefully get it soon, and looking at Ian's latest results I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he just rushes through and hit 8600 :)
I would not take you out of the picture for the longer distances Martin, considering up until recently you were mainly sprints(and very good at it) and shorter distances, you seem to be handling very high amounts of training lately, so I will be very exited to see what will be next after you hopefully(to not put too much pressure on you) break the magic 16k :D Realistically you are already at 8300+ now on a good day.

Well, to be honest I am not too sure it will be in 2020 the way things are going right now. Work is crazy, yesterday I was working until going to bed, and got up just over 5 AM this morning to continue.

So in addition to a huge work load, I am also an emotional eater, so high work load=crap diet

I just took a break from work to do a 60 min 16k which normally should be quite easy. Today it felt heavier than ever :?

This IS technically a PR. so I guess this is a fair place to share it. I have mixed feelings though.

Erged 5x 1500 this morning (5 minutes active rest between each). Aim was to start at approx 5k pace (1:39) then see how low I could drop. In the back of my mind I was hoping to flirt with 1:30 for my last 1500.

That didn't happen.

Went out sub 1:30 for the first 500, but I backed off at that point. Half of me is disappointed that I didn't push harder, half of me is happy that I made the "smart" move to not absolutely sell my soul. Ended up finishing my last interval in 4:36.2, for a 1:32.0 split.

It feels like technique is the main hurdle at the moment on the 500m sprints. It's improving, certainly, but I've been guilty of pulling too early with my arms and more or less falling of the seat. I actually landed on the rail on the final pull of my 100m PB.

With longer distances (2000m plus), I just settle into a steady, strong pull and the technique feels more fluid.

I'll leave the 500m PBs alone for a bit and come back to it in the New Year when I'm confident I can pull sub 1:20.

Thats very common, technique wise, sprinting is by far the most difficult.

What could help is, upping the feet 1 or 2 holes, this wil give a more vertical component, and second, use a very stricky short. Slippery track shorts are certainly not best for this.

There is certainly no hurry. Focus on technique is absolute very usefull.

1 Minute PB - 376M (1:19.7)

I was warming up for a go at the CTC and I have just got back to doing some good short sprint intervals recently, so my change in thought to test my 1 Minute was completely random and I had low expectations. My past PB (373 - 1:20.4) was like a year and a half old but didn't think I could touch it. It was an interesting row in a few ways. I start the 1 Minute with going as fast as I can and I didn't see any really low pulls, I think one at 1:17, which is slower than I used to do but.......I was able to sit on 1:18/1:19 pretty much the whole time with some fade towards the end. I felt like I pretty much did close to an all out sprint the whole time. Surprisingly my SPM was lower than past PB and about the same as my 500 PB - I almost think it was wrong as my last strokes I saw the SPM 10+ higher than the final average. Anyway, I feel like this result was based more on fitness than power. I really don't think I could top this unless I did lots of specific sprint training and not sure I am worried about trying it any more than the once every year and a half I just did.

Wow, great effort Keith!
An almost all out sprint for a whole minute sounds crazy, I can't even do a 250m sprint without fading at the end :)

Sub 6 seems in the bag soon. First few reps was cruising, look at that hf? Lots of potential.

Keith, nice work, pb and sub 1.20 :D
Thank Henry! Forgot to mention sub 1:20 was always my main goal for the 1'.

Very good mate. This is a very promising sign
Thanks Stu. I don't put a lot of stock in the 1' but it was nice to feel like I held a near max effort for the whole time, which I had to in order to PB as I couldn't drive the split down as much.

Wow, great effort Keith!
An almost all out sprint for a whole minute sounds crazy, I can't even do a 250m sprint without fading at the end :)
Thanks Martin. As I expected I didn't have the power to drive the split as low as I used to but was able to maintain a close to max effort the whole way. I don't plan to do this again for a long time but might give the 500m a go before too long - but thinking CTC next week.
