Thanks chaps.

If it's possible for a 1:21 pace to feel comfortable, it did for about 200m. Felt I could have gone a bit faster at that point, but I was surprised how quickly I died off in the final quarter of the row!

I'm pretty happy with my times now, with my 2k being the softest, but I'm still fairly content with it.

Knuckling down and training is the order of the day now. There is only so far you can milk the newbie gains!

Thanks for all the encouragement and well done to everyone else. It's great to see new pbs being posted every day.

Managed 1:22.5 on the 500m today. Also my first experience of total burnout in a row. I lost a full second in the final 130m as my 500 split dropped 5 seconds. I was honestly going as hard as I could but the clock was just getting slower and slower!!

Here were the splits:

1:22.5------500------1:22.5------39
----------------------------------------
-:16.4------100------1:22.0------37
-:16.1------200------1:20.5------37
-:16.3------300------1:21.5------41
-:16.5------400------1:22.5------44
-:17.2------500------1:26.0------38
Keep knocking them out of the park and those three shredded wheat for breakfast! :D (you are too young to remember this but it was an ad campaign a long long time ago!!). Doing brilliantly at this rowing thing!

The 500m is all about slowing down the least at the end! Its not like the longer distances is this respect. If you check out the results of the big guns at the recent BRIC indoor rowing champs, you can see the top three are in decline after 350m. Click on the graph symbol at the end of the results line on the results page.

The Three Shredded Wheat campaign, suggested that the cereal was so nourishing that it was impossible to eat three. Even a black hole was shown as exploding when the third biscuit was sucked into it. Phrases such as I bet you can't eat three and He must have eaten three were in common use as humorous remarks in the 1970s and 1980s, with celebrities such as Brian Clough, Peter Shilton, Richard Kiel and Ian Botham all 'unable' to eat three. A later UK poster advertisement for Carling Black Label showed a bowl with four Shredded Wheat and the caption "I bet he drinks Carling Black Label."

As others have said, the fade at the end of a 500m test is not abnormal or even a bad thing - pacing was pretty solid overall and the result was super strong. Keep crushing it - will only motivate some us to push for some PBs to try and keep up.

I used to eat so many Weetabix when I was a kid. I remember distinctly that I used to have 4 every morning aged 6. When I was at my most physically active/fit (aged 20) I used to eat 12.

There is a reason I'm over 2 metres tall!!

Anyway, long-distance fun this evening. Rowing solo with only a very loud fan and the arguments in my head (me trying to talk myself out of doing the full distance) for company!

24:00.0------1682-----1:47.0------25

Really chuffed with that. Puts me at the top of the 30 minute table on the weight training forum I'm on, which was my (very petty) target.

Also a pb by 569m.

Seriously get the f*** out of this thread!
This may be your best result yet.

You're 10m behind Ian though, so I think you need to give this another go!

Amazing stuff, and well done on the 2k and 500m PBs too (you're racking them up faster than I can type).

We have "Weet-Bix" here. The hyphenation and lack of "a" make all the difference and probably explain why Australia always seems to punch above its weight in most sports. I can just about remember the Humphrey milk adverts. Dry wheat biscuits of either incarnation would be a bit unpalatable, I suspect.

A few comments to make:

- very solid result mate, and a rude PB improvement
- you've got me thinking of doing a 30 min TT soon
- I'm glad to hear that you had self doubt too, and it wasn't a walk in the park
- nothing petty about wanting to top that table
- I'm fascinated to see where your potential takes you to

We all want to see your 30 min TT now Stu, that 8500 will not break it self :) Got a couple of candidates for next in line to break 8500 here on the forum, and your name is very hot on that list!

And with regards to the long distance comment, I picture myself Stu doing his 12 hour session...6 hours in, Stu thinks to himself: "Well that was the warm up done, time to get to work!"

Oh, 30 minutes is definitely long distance! If I get to the stage of wanting a drink mid set, it's long distance :D

Thanks for the encouragement guys. It was a fairly unpleasant 30 minutes, but I could have maintained the pace to 10k, if I'd needed to. I got my 500m split time down to below 1:30 in the final sprint, so there was a bit in the tank. Next time I do a 30 minute run, I'll try holding 1:45.5 instead of 1:46.5 and see where that gets me. That's the only way I get through these PB attempts is to pick a pace and try to hold it, with a sprint at the end. Any approach less calculated always failed for me.

The funny thing is that I started lifting again 8 months ago to sort out my back, which at the time was so bad that I was struggling to walk some days. It's still not quite 100%, but it's quite close now. The rowing isn't affected by my back, thankfully :D

Great work Big J!
Fascinating to see how fast you improve, you'll soon have very few ergers here for a friendly competition :)
Right now we could challenge each other at the sprint events, but I'm working for the longer distances atm and when I'm back at the sprint stuff you're propably way too far away for a challenge

Totally right Jo Andre, 8500 is the next great milestone for some fellas here, Stu and Keith will hopefully get it soon, and looking at Ian's latest results I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he just rushes through and hit 8600 :)

Totally right Jo Andre, 8500 is the next great milestone for some fellas here, Stu and Keith will hopefully get it soon, and looking at Ian's latest results I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he just rushes through and hit 8600 :)
I would not take you out of the picture for the longer distances Martin, considering up until recently you were mainly sprints(and very good at it) and shorter distances, you seem to be handling very high amounts of training lately, so I will be very exited to see what will be next after you hopefully(to not put too much pressure on you) break the magic 16k :D Realistically you are already at 8300+ now on a good day.

Hahaha, that 12 hours wasn't too bad. Lots of distraction and incentive to get it done as it was in a gym with lots of people coming and going, and a spare erg beside me.

I'm starting to believe that 8500m is possible, but it still seems daunting: too many bad memories of struggling at 1:47/48.

Hahaha, yep, Ian will hit defo hit 8500m soon, and 8600m isn't very far off. I'll be very interested to see how you both compare with sprints in the future. I also agree with Jo Andre too, 8300+ is there if you want it enough.

Thanks mate, but right now I'm simply no challenger for guys like Stu and Keith, they can do the same pace for double the distance. Nevertheless I'm very happy my my endurance training and see good progression, 8300 right now should be about right and maybe 8500 as target for next season :D
When will we see your 60' PB? Your confidence must be sky high after this cracking HM PB :D

Thanks mate, 8300 will soon be a target, right now the 16k are my main focus :)

When I finally get my power rack (hopefully in the coming days) I'll pay more attention to the sprint distances, together with my better base fitness significant improvements should be possible, and results like Big J's 500 are great motivation too :)
