Question for Bike Erg Teammates

Post by Kona2 » November 28th, 2020, 12:01 pm

I received a PM from PTR, a bike erger in the Concept2 Universe, and thought the easiest way to get input from the team's bike ergers was to post it here on the forum. Please read through and provide any feedback you can.

From what I can gather from previous issues noted first on our team forum by warnie, some early editions of the crank arm have some vibration, and a thunk as the crank arm rotates through its arc. As you read through the thread linked in Peter's message, you may remember the issue discussion. The right pedal is often the one mentioned in other forums...and that is the one that we all have to install ourselves when the bike erg arrives. One of the suggestions others have made is to remove that right pedal (right pedals loosen counter-clockwise), and reapply some bike grease to the pedal. Then tighten the pedal by turning clockwise. You really have to insert the pedal at a steady 90 degree angle...and I did find that it was tough to fully tighten the pedal on the bike erg received a couple months ago. Still, for some, this has not been a sufficient fix. I always recommend calling Concept2 directly. They are super people, and when you are connected up to the tech shop people, they can help you troubleshoot quite well. I am sure that some of my questions to them have been snort-worthy, but they still work through them!

Dear Kona2,

I have seen your very helpful post about the overview gen1-2-3 crank arm designs on the BikeErg here:
viewtopic.php?f=29&t=7369&start=24450#p465909

I know that there have been problems with gen1 (single small screw version) and people got gen3 (double big screw) as a solution.
But till todays experience what is the consensus/conclusion about the gen2 (single big screw) design? Is it holding up well, no issues? Or people still get it updated to gen3 in the same rate as gen1 owners?

Could you please ask the gen2 owner guys in your thread/club and around you?
Thank you in advance!
Best Regards
Peter

My BikeErg was one of the first and had the Gen1 crank. I had a thunk and called Concept2 and was advised there was a free replacement crank arm with one big screw - I guess this is Gen2. I asked about the crank arm I saw in some pictures on the C2 web site which had 2 big screws (Gen3?), but was advised that the crankshaft (the splined shaft that sticks out of the BikeErg body) would not accept the Gen3 double screw crank arm.

After installation of the Gen2 crank arm on my BikeErg I have had no more trouble with any thunking - smooth pedal/crank motion irrespective of force. This has been a very satisfactory solution to my thunk problem.

So... It sounds to me that depending on how old your BikeErg is, you should be able to receive gratis from C2 either the Gen2 or Gen3 crank arms to resolve any thunking problem.

A fun note from Thor

Not the right time stamp - but it will have to do.
Here is the newest addition to the LunaTics "family":

For those who don't know me, K2 named me Mighty Thor back when I first joined this team. Janice also joined but has been on the injured list for some time now. Well, Janice decided that she could no longer live without a dog. I present to you Little Thor. No doubt he will be the Mighty Thor in a short time, but for now he is 8 weeks old and just came home today.

I am also blind and I asked K2 to post this for me as I don't know how to upload pics. No, Thor will not be a guide dog. That takes months of training by skilled professionals. He is Janice's dog and my little buddy. Now then K2, since you are partly responsible for naming this little ball of fur, I will hold you personally responsible for all the whining for the next night or 3.

Thor aka Michael W.
I am happy to post this wonderful baby picture. Very alert puppy - he is looking right at the camera! Great news! Have lots of patience and give that puppy lots of love, and many things to chew on. It will all go smoothly.

Thank you K2 for posting this for me. Thanks for all the kind words folks. It was a long night but we all got through it. We just took him for a walk and he is taking to the leash amazingly well. I think he's ggoing to be a pretty smart fellow. I just hope he gets big fast. He's too small around my feet. Grin.

Image Day 5 of 29 dawns...reindeer harness bells are jingling!!

Yep, TWO reindeer have been freed from their temporary holding pen as Ed and Derric claim the first two Lunie reindeer by earning 100,000 m Challenge meters (and their $2 contribution)! Last year we had a herd of 54...this might be a bigger year!! We always start out with the classic reindeer names, unless indications are made that a teammate wants to name their reindeer something else.

I wore out my pair of dedicated rowing shoes! The Merrell Bare Access shoes I've been using since early 2018 no longer keep my heel in the shoe when erging, so every time I get to the catch my shoe rubs on my heel. I looked high and low for those shoes again, but finding them in size 14 proved too much. I bought a pair of Merrell Vapor Glove 3 shoes as a replacement - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078NL7KWF/ . I've only done ~10k in them, but they're pretty comfortable. 0 heel/toe drop, basically no padding in the sole to speak of, and no plastic stiffener in the heel cup.
