500m first time row

Post by scarfacem16 » November 19th, 2020, 1:37 pm

Hi everyone, hope you are all okay
I tried rowing 500m for the first time today on a concept 2 machine. Other than using one to warm up in the gym for a few minutes every once in a blue moon, I’ve never used one for a work out.
My time was 1:20.2. I was wondering if that’s a good starting time as my friend who owns the machine has said it’s good. It was fun and I’d like to do more. Thanks. Tom

I'd be suspicious that the PM3/PM4/PM5 on that ergo is configured for the wrong model.

1'20" for 500m is a World Class/Olympic standard 5'20" for 2000m and an amateur rower isn't doing that on their first go on an ergo.

I can confirm the monitor is a PM5 and the rower is concept 2 E model. All calibrated professionally.

The world record is around 1:10 so I’m far from world class but I guess it’s a good start. I’m 6 foot 5 120kg I believe that’s okay for a novice

If you are well trained, and do weights 1.20 is doable but still very respectable. 99% of rowers will never pull 1.20 but ofcourse 6.5 120 kg is a big plus. You could do very well if you start training.

Thank you, I’m going to start training and see what I can really do with some guidance and hard work!

Welcome, you could around a bit on instagram and find other guys. Here on the forum are, at the moment no real big sprinters around.

Also have a look at the concept2 rankings, not just this season, for names. If you could get below 1.15 you would be very competitive. There are indeed three guys who pulled 1:10,5 2 are to be found on youtube.

Edit Phil Clap and Loren Howard. Search 500m wr rowing

Thanks, I’ll check it out. I’d like to be around 110-112kg and lose some muscle as I imagine 120kg is to heavy.

What does that mean?
Have you checked the PM5 is calibrated for the MODEL D/E?

I think we need a video on YT that shows you pulling up the product ID pages then rowing your 500m.

Even MAD's Rob Smith only did 1:15 pace for 300m and he had green skin and a ripped shirt when he walked out to the ergo at the short course competition in 2007.

Rob later pulled 1.14.4 over 500. After he trained himself stronger Doug. And yes its hard rowing  if you go at max.

See, I told you he was a pale shade of green and built like the Hulk (or was that the lighting at the Cardiff venue).

Actually he was not. Only 188 and was below 100kg at first. Later he was indeed very big around 115kg. Technique wise a good example. Solid as a rock in his stroke.

Doug/Citroen has a cycling background and anybody who do 10 pushups is a hulk in that world

I’ve got a video on my phone how do I post it? Funny thing is you’re talking asif I’m lying? I’m new to this and was looking for some sportsman advice and nice people to help direct me. only because you can’t pull this Citroen doesn’t mean that somebody else can’t. I can assure you the kit is legit.

You can upload it on youtube and then post the link here. 1:20 is an outstanding effort with hardly any experience, can't wait to see what you'll pull with good preparation, good luck! :)

Relax, doug does the moderation and gets all sorts off stuff to deal with. 1.20 is simply fast, but for a strong 120kg guy certainly not suspect.
