So the count down start is done on your computer screen? I’ve still had no instructions. Can’t see anything on Scottish or British rowing sites. You’d think it would be easy to post how it’s going to go.

Anything show up on your PM screen? Guess not

Check out the Time Team Home Race manual pages.... it explains how the lobby works and what you will see on your monitor.
Particularly look in the FAQ section.

Does anyone know if you have to have shoes on for a LWT weigh in?

11 Lightweight Weigh In
All lightweight competitors must be aged 18 or over.
Lightweight men shall not weigh more than 75kg. Lightweight women shall not weigh more than
61.5kg.
Lightweight competitors will be required to submit evidence of their weight from 2 hours before the
start of the racing day (i.e. from 07:00 on 21/11/20) until 60 minutes before the scheduled start
time of their race. Any weigh-in evidence submitted after this time cut-off will not be accepted.
Competitors shall submit a photograph of themselves on the scales in racing clothing, with their
weight visible alongside evidence of the current date (for example, a phone/tablet/laptop screen
with the current date & time or that day’s newspaper)

I'm not sure, but I'd be surprised if you did have to wear them.

Got the final instructions now and all is clear. The PM will show the start. Looks good. Looking forward to this and the British in December

When I did the Australian Indoors (virtually), I just wore my lycra and it was deemed fine so it should be okay without shoes! I've never weighed with shoes even on in person races like BIRC and no one batted a lid if helpful =)

You welcome! I am sharing my rowing machine with my GF, and we got a really fast handover to make it work, so I am hoping I don't totally mess it up on the day!

A team mate of mine, posted this that he got from another group, but I think it's very relevant and helpful


Some Tips for the Engine House Team competing at the Scottish Champs this weekend.

2 days before and on the morning of the race.
  • create a sense of hope
  • focus on what you could do if everything went to plan ; don’t entertain what you couldn’t do
  • create a sense of nervous excitement about what you could achieve
  • spend a few minutes in the morning controlling your breathing to calm your mind
  • do a light row in the morning to tune your body in and just help you relax


Warm up:
  • time your warm up to coincide with the start of your race
  • understand your first few pace markers. >Rehearse positive feelings as you move through these markers
  • rehearse what good rowing feels like ; powerful fluent movements that repeat themselves
  • think about connecting your breathing to the drive phase and recovery phase


Just before the start:
  • Stay alert
  • Relax your breathing
  • sip water


As you start:
  • Stay in the moment don’t look further ahead than your first pace marker
  • focus some of your mind on what makes up good technique/ form
  • understand how many power strokes you want to use out the blocks
  • locate the race rate you want to achieve early and settle into it


Mid race :
  • Anticipate a moment of self doubt , it will probably come at some point but don’t entertain it ...just stay in the moment and repeat in your head that your ok .
  • Give yourself a mental pat on the back and tell yourself you can do it


Approaching the Finish
  • Throw all your emotion into the finish
  • lift your effort levels and grasp hold of the fact your almost there
  • If you’ve paced yourself correctly you will have a surge of positive energy
  • row through the line (yes I know some of you will laugh at me for this last point 😊)

And remember it’s all about what you could get...

I'm also taking part in this, from Germany. Also my first ever event - kinda fitting as I am Scottish. :)

One of my questions has already been answered about the weigh-in and wearing shoes. I have been worrying about reaching weight, but this morning I came in at 74.8kg so should be ok tomorrow - first time under 75kg. I actually couldn't sleep well last night as I was imagining weighing in at 75.5kg today and having to skip food today to get under in time. This is the lightest I remember ever being - probably for at least 20 years!

My second question would be about the start - the instructions suggest that you have to return the handle to the (thingy where you put the handle - what's it called?). Then when it says "attention" you pick up the handle and wait to start, then start in about 2s later. However, I would much rather start from half-way down the slide. Is that possible? They suggest that once the handle is returned they wait 1min for all the flywheels to stop spinning. Does anyone stop at half-way and hold a race-start position until Attention? It could be an uncomfortably long 1min.

It's the "handle hook".

The way I would get my venue races to work was
  1. Get everyone sat down and get them to check their drag factor
  2. "Pick up the handles" - which was my warning to the rowers and the audience that I was about to start the race.
  3. Set the venue racing software running.
  4. The software would then display
    • SIT READY
    • ATTENTION
    • Random pause
    • ROW
If anyone pulled the handle during the random pause we'd get a false start. If you wanted to start sitting backwards or with your legs on the floor or sitting half way down the slide I wasn't doing anything about it. It was your choice when I announced "Pick up the handles".

Not sure how the Internet Venue racing stuff works.

The main difference was that a venue race starts the clock then presents "ROW" on the PM5 screen. With a regular workout you start the clock by making the first stroke.

You can practice racing starts with this sequence of buttons
