Yeah Haavard is a beast, he is also from Norway so quite well known here. Competed in Athletic fitness many years ago, where they had a 1 minute row on c2 as one of the competitions. Think he was very early with breaking 400 meters. Calls himself Skippern, which is basically norwegian for Popeye(the sailor man).

Had a second pop at 5000m today and got my time down to 18:06. Maintained a pretty steady 1:49.8 until the last 700m and went for it from there and shaved off about 12 seconds.
That was a challenge though

This is a great row. We are probably of similar stature, I'm a little shorter than you but currently heavier. You definitely have way more cardio than I do. I pulled a 6:29 2k earlier this year but would have struggled to get under 18min for 5k.

It was quite a tough one to pace. I wanted to hold a 1:50 time throughout and then sprint the last 500m, which is pretty much what I did. I'll aim to do a 1:48 throughout and a final sprint to get it under 18 min.
I need to get my 1k under 7 min too. That's the next stop

1k should be very easy
Rough relation between is 5k and 2 is around 6 seconds. So this 148.6 points to a 6.50 right now. Keep building those longer stuff, and do go for a pb every session. Give you body time to build.

Haha! I had gathered that.
At the moment all I am doing is reaping newbie gains.
Also, rowing DOMS are quite something. My entire back from the spinal erectors up is sore

In an effort to establish a baseline from which to train, I pushed my 2000m pb a bit to 6:47.9 (17 second reduction). Not a full-on, balls-out effort and shoulders were a little tired from push pressing before hand, but close enough. Completely fresh, I'd maybe have 6:40 in there.
I also had a most frustrating aborted run at 1000m two days ago. I'd been suffering a bit with an upset stomach, felt OK going onto the rower but in the space of 2 minutes went from not needing the loo to desperate and had to call off an attempt at about 750m. I was on for a 3:04/3:05 at that point. Shit happens, or as is thankfully not the case here. It feels like 3 minutes dead is where my max would be presently.
I'll have one last go at 500m to ideally get it under 1:25 and then I'll get started properly training.
When doing working sets, how far from PB pace should one be working in order for the work to be effective?

No real answer, but right now you are making big leaps, this will continue, but at some point it will stop. At that point your rows will be very tough. From there you still can improve, but need more structure and time.
You need to realise you have a great build for the rower, and are not super fit, so you could improve a lot more if you put the work into it.

Great work. I don't know if you already have a training plan to work from, but if not, the pete plan would be a great place to start. It requires a lot of time (6 sessions a week). But at your current "newbie" stage, you should be able to get close to 6:30 after 1 cycle.

For me the key test was the 8x500m with 3:30 rest session. Once I was able to hit an average pace of around 1:35, I knew I could do 6:30 without a problem.
