LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 11.05.2020
Starting to see more Lunies on the daily roster....a notable participation marker as we prep for the upcoming Holiday Challenge!
Weekend snowfall predictions for parts of Colorado are in FEET vs inches for some of our mountain areas. This is a good thing since the East Troublesome fire is only 37 percent contained.

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Haven't had much time on either of the ergs this week. I was sick at the start of the week and that just knocked me out. The weather today was gorgeous, so I had to get a last metric half century in before the winter hits!

Make a plan....
I was reading through the Holiday Challenge write up that Concept2 provides ... to find out about the charities we can donate our meters towards (or let Concept2 choose). A couple of paragraphs below the links to the charities (Everyone Eats charity link does not appear to work), there was the following blurb about preparing for the Challenge:
Preparing for the Holiday Challenge
If completing 100,000 or 200,000 meters in a month is a new challenge for you, here are some ideas to help you prepare:
Don't be intimidated! Every year people who have never completed long distances complete the challenge.
Gradually build your workout time. Try adding an extra 1000 meters per day, especially if you don't usually complete 7000 meters at a time.
If you don't usually workout every day, try working out for several days in a row. The workouts can be short, but see how it feels to row/ski/ride more often.
Keep some stretching in your routine or add it if you haven't been doing it regularly.
Think about when you will fit your extra Holiday Challenge workouts into your schedule. If it requires you to workout at a different time of day than usual, try it out ahead of time to see how it feels.
Plan ahead so that you can make up any missed meters due to travel or other commitments.
Pace yourself! Many people have commented that the Holiday Challenge pushed them to do more than they ever thought they could, and it felt great! On the other hand, it is not wise to make a sudden jump in the amount of rowing/skiing/riding you do, so keep this in mind. You can build your daily meters gradually, even during the challenge itself.
It's TRADITION for many of us to complete the 200 K level of the Challenge, and earn the Holiday Challenge pin. Each year I think back to the very first one I completed...and how messy it was. The Challenge was well into its second week when I decided "hey that looks like something I should do." I'd never completed that many meters in a month, and now was faced with completing that same amount of meters in 21 days. Fortunately, I did have a rowing machine at home. I wasn't used to rowing back to back days, and certainly wasn't used to rowing long meter producing sessions. I finished the Challenge just before the stroke of midnight on the last day. While I vowed to prepare for and do the next Challenges in a steadier fashion, it doesn't always happen that way. I bet it doesn't happen that way for you either. (This has been true for bike events, and hikes...I see a pattern here.)
So. What I have found to be true for me is:
- whatever distance your longest distance completed recently is...on a given day, you can go one-third farther than that previously completed longest distance. This is often how most of us make the leap to a half marathon milestone....you know full well that you can do a 15K, but you're going for a 21K in one lightspeed jump instead of a couple of interim tries. You might even go directly from a bunch of 10Ks, to a half marathon.
- the above "formula" doesn't compute for events that are multiple days. You have to do the prep work of back to back to back erging days, or biking, etc., days. This is why weekend events such as the MS 150, or the Triple ByPass (a Colorado cycling event that is HUGE), recommend that you complete back to back days of closely similar distances to what you'll be doing a couple of weekends before the event.
- when you get tired, your form goes to crap, and you can hurt yourself. Getting the right rest and nutrition...it's all part of the preparation. But. I will note that completing lots of meters adds a happy eat what you want element to the Temptation Gauntlet.

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 11.11.2020
Hooyah! More Lunies erging! Seeing an average of 20-25 percent more Lunies contributing meters this week! Maybe it's because the Holiday Challenge is coming to an erg near you, and maybe it's because there are MANY other activities that we can't safely do at the moment....stay safe Lunies!
