Re: Forum Flyers
Hello Forum Flyers,
I joined the Flyers for the C2 FTC. I enjoyed watching everyone's progress throughout the challenge. My only experience with the rowerg was limited to usage at the local health club. We only had 2 ergs there, so time on it was limited to 20 minutes. After the health clubs were closed down in Illinois, I was fortunate to get on the Concept 2 waitlist to purchase my own.
I enjoyed the challenge and am looking forward to the next one as motivation.
I think joining the Flyers was a great choice, and I'll be quietly adding my meters to the teams totals.

Hello And Welcome James. The FTC was a bit of “nose in the wind” was it not? I love to make it as hard as possible for those who make it hard as possible for me.

Re: Forum Flyers
To be fair (to all of us and not solely the annoying outliers with publicity and no logbook in view), I checked to see how many Flyers made their logs public during the Fall Team Challenge. Incidentally, ErgData is not required as some continue to upload from PM tethered to the C2 Utility via USB or by log card. A few enter manually by writing in their daily training.lindsayh wrote: ↑October 16th, 2020, 11:43 pmFWIW I'm inclined to believe the long meter people - there have been others in the past as well - most famously a lady named Darlene Brennan who has been interviewed by C2 and had others substantiate her exploits. She logged >2million an a number of occasions. I think did 100K a day for a month. She managed "only" 1.3m this time for the AncientsTandstad wrote: ↑October 16th, 2020, 4:22 amIn all honesty, I do not think anyone did 3,75 million I call him bluff, like a lot of other people around. If anyone were to do 8,5-9 hours per day(like he says in interviews), they would probably not have time to eat enough calories to stay in a caloric surplus, which he obviously is at 205 kg.
The fact that he does not want to show his monitor just strengthens this suspicion.
It is the domain of seniors with lots of time on their hands. Breaks it into 3 or 4 sessions around 2:40 pace I believe.
Why would they make it up?
I just wish they would use erg data to prove it.
The answer is very few. Jo Andre and Neil both have logbooks visible as do I, both of the Voorhees “tag team,” Lindsay, Graham, Fred Dickie and Ewen Roth. I probably missed someone but still a small minority of the 81 participating. There are additional members who make their ranked efforts but not their daily training public. One member’s logbk went “dark” during the challenge. I know because he was top 5 at the time and I do keep an eye on the “competition” despite my experience of never having won any sort of contest (mostly telephone pole sprints) in which the losers would actually admit that they were racing.
In any event, let’s try to be merciful and remember that we haven’t really seen every twist and turn In this sporting life until it happens to us or someone close to us.

Re: Forum Flyers
great to have you on board James/Jim - the Flyers growth this year has been amazing and welcome to all
If you haven't looked yet have a go at the CTC monthly challenge - changes each month and it is a numbers game with every entry welcome and is detailed in the new members doco. We don't finish at the top but keep our heads up each month. The value is the varying nature of each challenge provides a lot of variety and forces us to do things we otherwise wouldn't. This month is 30 minutes and we have 20 entries already which means 4 boats floated.
BTW Marc (if you are reading) I notice that you and Linda live in Asheville NC. (as does a long term Forum member Glen who is a really nice guy) Never been anywhere near but I remember that a couple of years ago it was nominated as the most liveable city in the US of A by Lonely Planet - must come and visit sometime in the long distant future.

Thanks for the heads-up on the CTC. I'll probably look into it next month. The majority of my workouts have been "just row", so I'm going to play with the Concept2 WODs for a while to familiarize myself with varying workouts with the PM5--force me to do things I otherwise wouldn't.
Thanks again,
James

Some space for a Dutch indoor rower? Been rowing on my "own" for 5 years now, and want to join some challenges together with others. Do I have to do something else? I am quite new to the online Concept2 world.

Yes, we do! Our outgoing club captain, Henry J. Strieker, is from Amstelveen, which I think is Greater Amsterdam? And several others Nederlanders. Hi Johan - you are very welcome and we have had a strong link to the Netherlands for many years. Henry has a very long history and the Colonius clan go back to when the team was founded many years ago. Ronald Brouwer is active at the moment too.Johan Smit wrote: ↑October 18th, 2020, 12:40 pmSome space for a Dutch indoor rower? With reference to jackarabit's comment "One member’s logbk went “dark” during the challenge. I know because he was top 5 at the time and I do keep an eye on the “competition...;”" that may have been me. If so, sorry.
I'm of mixed mind about public viewing of logs. First, I have nothing to brag about, as my average splits are only in the approximate range between 2:25 and 2:35 for an hour+ row. Second, everyone's reasons for rowing a challenge are different, so my performance in the FTC is irrelevant to anyone else who doesn't share the same motives as me. Anyway, I didn't set a personal goal for the FTC, and just decided to see how it worked out. I ended up with 377,983m, which is certainly pretty random.
Anyway, at one point, I said to myself "why bother making this viewable to anyone else?" A couple of days later, I realized that some people (not Forum Flyers) were getting hung up on the legitimacy of claimed meters, so I made mine visible again. Mine are all verified, Ergdata-uploaded stats.
I get that time-trials and PRs worth bragging about are different, and those should probably be verified. On the other hand, something like the FTC is so loose and informal that I'm not sure that it matters.
Hey, I'm just here to stay fit and have fun!

Perhaps similar complaints were raised elsewhere in the forum? No surprise there as this is a perennial favorite bitch. No reason to feel compelled to reopen your logbk either. As you say, it doesn’t matter much to you and it stopped mattering to me on 14 Oct. when I put enuf daylight between myself and the chase to feel confident I would stay away to the end and come first or certainly not farther out than fifth in a simple game of cardinals become ordinals. I have the tweaked left knee, the DOMS, and the logbk (which I don’t need) to prove I ain’t afraid to make an idjit of myself and brag about it.

Re: Forum Flyers
A few thoughts on meter munching as competitive sport:
The CoVi lockups and downs this year have brought in a lot of new members. I’ve been keeping a rough sort of tally of the interests and goals expressed in intro postings. In April thru June, the closing of gyms worldwide led a lot of young people of considerable athletic prowess or potential to our doorstep. Interest in competitive indoor rowing dominated team topics. Our favorite virtual venue, the C2 Cross Team Challenge got a lot of additional FF entries and there was strong participation in the SERIES 8 weekly contests.
Recently the new member intake is a bit older, a bit less enthusiastic for balls to the wall comps but certainly still interested in objective measures of effort, strength, and aerobic capacity and espressing desire to kickstart or bump up the daily fitness time by participating in seasonal “participation” challenges.
Chew on this. Self-styled fitness enthusiasts are not REQUIRED to compete in team challenges; they are WELCOME to record their meters as a contribution to the team. But they are also WELCOME to compete as individuals towards personal competitive goals. Don’t let anyone tell you the race you choose to compete in isn’t the real deal. The trashtalkers and shadethrowers will name, and rename, their game. When the deal comes round, name your game, play to your own strengths, focus on the effort, don’t be afraid to take what some say they don’t want. Remember the feller or gal with the mostest meters is The Honch of Participation.
