That really is solid progress. Imo, the acid test for an all out 5k is, did you consider HDing at the 3-4k range? Every time that happens for me unless I'm not really trying

First, welcome! Those are some major accomplishments and you are just starting, cant wait to see all what you can do.richabrahams wrote: ↑October 5th, 2020, 6:05 pmBefore I mention my recent rowing accomplishments, as a complete newbie, I’d like to say how impressed I am with the rowing online community. While I don’t get much of the jargon and inside jokes, I love how knowledgeable the posters are and the wide range of topics.
I started rowing for two reasons. First, as a long-time serious competitive masters swimmer there is currently no outlet for my strong competitive nature and none in the foreseeable future. Second, my shoulders are pretty shot with arthritis, but miraculously, don’t bother me rowing.
I’m 75 years old and a lightweight (barely at 164). So about 10 days ago, after talking to the nice people at Concept 2 who showed me how the monitor worked, I tried an all out 500 meters and went a 1:38.1 which I guess tied the American record for 70-79. I’m from Denver and my health club sits at 5,400’. It was brutal and I coughed for 2 days. I should mention that I have a sprinter physiology and my best swim events are around one minute or less. Anyway, this past Saturday I tried a one-minute row which suits my physiology better and managed 328 meters which breaks the old record of 324. Way less painful. So, as you might imagine I’m pretty pumped up and may actually start seriously training more that a couple of thousand a week though I doubt I’ll ever be up for a 2,000.

“Handle down” as in giving up/quitting?
If so I was contemplating that at 2200m but then looked at hr and saw it was still way below threshold hr so I just smiled and kept pulling.

Really went to war today. 5km time trial. Target was 1.42.9 or 17.09
Previous PB was 17.14 and was probably my best result based on on other times. So i knew this was going to be hard. But i also thought on a good day i could push for 17.05
Well it turned into a real battle. The old me would have stopped at the start of the 2nd rep. I had to fight hard to hit 1.42.9
Voices in my head were taunting me endlessly. At one point i resorted to just finishing the piece no matter the time. Then i renegotiated and made a deal to just try and beat my previous time and still end up with a PB.
I was at max HR starting the final 1250. So i had just over 4 minutes of grinding it out at max heart rate which was painful. I had "predicted time" on the screen and was able to dig in just enough to hit my target time. Absolutely rooted!

Beautiful stuff, those 0.2 seconds to hit sub 17.10 makes such a difference in appearance too Great grind, going at max HR for over 4 minutes is really taxing!iangallagher wrote: ↑October 8th, 2020, 8:23 pmReally went to war today. 5km time trial. Target was 1.42.9 or 17.09

Huge result and richly deserved given the training you have put in. It must have taken a some determination not to HD trying to hold that pace! KUDOS!!!!iangallagher wrote: ↑October 8th, 2020, 8:23 pmReally went to war today. 5km time trial. Target was 1.42.9 or 17.09

Thanks all!! (I still stuff up the multi-quote)
Yeah was some effort. I think it was the thought of redoing it tomorrow if I pulled out today. Not that the coach would
Have told me to do that but I would have made myself.
Found some new limits today so all good. I thought I’d be able to hold on for only a minute at max heart rate but surprised myself
So that’s good to know going into future time trials
