Problem with RowPro

Post by chas.s » September 29th, 2020, 11:00 am

Hi All,
I have recently updated to a new PM5 and today tried to use RowPro ver 5.4, for the first time since upgrading the PM.
However, it does not work with my new PM5. As soon as I start rowing the Row Pro screen shows: 'Your row was interrupted because the menu/back button was pressed on the Concept 2PM. Click close to restart your row'.

When I do that, exactly the same thing happens again. My PM5 has Firmware Version: 169.

Does anyone have any ideas to resolve my problem please?

Thanks, Chas.

Hi Chas,
I am running 5.6 of RowPro (trial, considering the 25% discount but with the problems I see, kinda hesitant to make the leap.. anyway) -- ver 168 of PM5. I am (also) hesitant to upgrade to new PM5 firmware version 168. I have only used it (RowPro) a few times and other than today when it didn't program the PM5 for the training session it seems to be reliable.
My recommendation is to upgrade to version 5.6 (maybe it supports the newer firmware).. if not you might be able to downgrade the firmware. I read this is possible with the concept2 utility but not via USB.
Recommend upload/sync workouts and backup any applicable RowPro data.

If that doesn't work maybe reach out to RowPro support.

I hope that helps, wish I had more.

One more idea: check for Beta version of RowPro - my guess is they are already working to resolve issues with new firmware - beta software may introduce other bugs so there is that to consider.

Thanks guys. I have notified RowPro & awaiting a reply.
I will update to version 5.6 and see if that resolves the issue.
Cheers, Chas.

I have recently tested v169 firmware with RowPro v5.6.1 and found it to operate as expected. The general recommendations provided by RowPro when customers experience difficulties is as follows:

############################################
• You definitely must not have the C2 Utility and RowPro running at the same time – that just won’t work.
• You definitely must not have any apps like ErgData for instance connected to the PM5 via Bluetooth at the same time as RowPro is connected to the PM5 via USB – again that just won’t work.
• You should always connect the PM5 via USB before starting RowPro.
• You should not press buttons on the PM5 while it’s connected to RowPro, otherwise RowPro will lose control of the PM5. So for example if you need to configure your HR monitor on your Concept2 PM, you should do that before starting RowPro.
• If you’re connecting the PM5 to your computer via a USB hub, especially one that’s got other devices like a mouse or keyboard connected, please try it with the PM5 connected directly to the computer’s USB port, even if it’s just once to prove whether that’s the issue.
• Also for the record, we recommend not to have a USB drive plugged into the PM5 while RowPro is running, so if you have that, please remove it, even just once to prove whether that’s the issue.

Finally if you still have problems after all the above, can you please click Tools | System info on the RowPro main menu and send that to me?
##########################################

And in the most extreme cases (I would only do this as a last resort since this erases the PM5 logbook contents):

##########################################
As a first step you should do a hard factory reset of the PM5. To do that, hold down the Units and Display buttons and press a pen tip into the recess on the back of the PM5. Continue holding the Units and Display buttons down for at least 7 seconds or until the display briefly flashes ‘Setting Factory Defaults’. Then release the buttons.
##########################################

I never just leap to the latest version of RowPro, if its not broken don't try and fix it. Problem is with the trial you may have no choice ?

Using a PM5 on V168 with RP 5.4.1 and a fairly decent PC, its a Hp Z240 i7 CPU with the GeForce GTX750Ti video card and 16Gb of RAM. No issues whatsoever with this setup running the Garmin ANT+ HR strap AND ErgData via Bluetooth to an old Android Samsung A3 phone all at the same time. The same PC is also pumping out the music from a playlist to a 2.1 audio amplifier.

Many problems are caused by your Computer with either the hardware not being up to the job or the constant Windows 10 updates making changes.

Its not true you cannot run ErgData at the same time. What you must do is turn on the PC and the PM5 and setup your HR monitor first, ErgData second and then open RowPro. No issues whatsoever.

ErgData is what you want to use these days if you have a Concept 2 online Logbook, it uploads everything that 99% of users need to record.

I am the firmware developer for the PM, so I agree that using ErgData will work, although it may impact RowPro performance just by virtue of more activity on the PM. I think RowPro just attempts to simplify the setup as much as possible when customers are experiencing problems, and I don't think that is an unreasonable support approach. Once working then connections can be added as desired.

I have the same feeling - avoid upgrading anything if it works. The inner tinkerer side of me meets the "avoid upgrading anything" side of me by waiting a few weeks or months to be sure bugs are worked out. Sometimes the tinkerer goes mad and tries the beta versions... this usually doesn't work out well.

I don't see anywhere on RowPro website to download a different version. Even if there is I doubt there would be a way to trial different version.

Is it required to "disconnect" the C2 Log from RowPro to prevent duplicates being uploaded to C2 Log? If so I don't see anyway in RowPro to disconnect. I am running Mac version of RowPro...

Running 168 firmware with 5.6 RowPro isn't causing me any issues.
