Gave it another go at 5km today. Knocked about 16-17 seconds off my previous PB. I only wanted to beat my previous best of 19:14 but sub 19 was in sight so I had to go for it! Happy with the unintentional negative splits too!

I was on the rower at work which has a PM3 so couldn’t use my HR monitor but I ended up at 182 bmp (on my Apple Watch) which is pretty much my max
Well done Dave...sub 19 is a great milestone 👏👏👏

That's a very impressive chunk to knock off and well done for breaking sub-19. It's always a sweet feeling when you break a milestone.

Did a 60 minute time trial today. Low expectations as i dont deserve a good time as i havent put in the hours. So i was expecting much - just hoping to complete it and hit 16km per the target.

Set off well. Thought id get a slight buffer as i knew id need it somewhere along the way. That happened at the 30 minute mark. Had to hop off the rower and adjust my fan and grab a drink. Lost 100 meters there. Didnt particularly revive me in any way but managed to slog home to the finish. Had a little sprint at the end and was glad to be done.

Didnt really enjoy that at all. Bum was numb for the majority, my form felt sloppy and generally just felt too hard today. Glad to get it over with. Just checked and beat my previous best by around 800 meters so cant be too upset really.

Thanks mate. Its really just a line in the sand to get a score on the board. Lots of lessons learnt. Lots of room for improvement. But certainly a distance not to be taken lightly. With focussed training i know i can do a lot better but this distance/time doesnt excite me too much right now to make me want to train for it.

Congratulations Ian. Easily through the 16k mark Next time with no getting off break and only a bit more focus on training for longer distances I think you will be able to nail 1:50 flat. Snatching drink is fine though and you do this without losing very much time at all with practice.
Have you managed to sort out a misting fan? Keeping cool on the long distance is a must in my book. When you are forming your own lake to row on (!) during long distances, overheating and not hydrating enough can mean things go south quite quickly.

16k in an hour with a ‘rest’ in the middle! Not too shabby that. Another well done.

Thanks mate. Funny you should ask - a misting fan was delivered yesterday. Was great timing. So I had the fan on but without the mister. I got up at halfway to put the mister on and it was heaven. The cooling effect was considerable so next time it’ll be on from the start.
