LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.

Definitely got the cold temperatures, a welcome reprieve from the 90Fs...but not more than a couple of inches of snow. Just enough for the dogs to get totally giddy with it all.

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 9.09.2020
September is not just for the start up of the Fall Challenge, although that does occur within the week! September 19th is International Talk Like A Pirate Day...and there's no time like the present to start thinking about how many ayes and avasts you're going to sprinkle into your commentary throughout the day. A teammate first introduced us to this celebration - and I'm passing it along to you. Might as well practice now so these phrases will just naturally be spoken.
http://talklikeapirate.com/wordpress/how-to/
Ahoy! – “Hello!”
Avast! – Stop and give attention. It can be used in a sense of surprise, “Whoa! Get a load of that!” which today makes it more of a “Check it out” or “No way!” or “Get off!”
Aye! – “Why yes, I agree most heartily with everything you just said or did.”
Aye aye! – “I’ll get right on that sir, as soon as my break is over.”
Arrr! – This one is often confused with arrrgh, which is of course the sound you make when you sit on a belaying pin. “Arrr!” can mean, variously, “yes,” “I agree,” “I’m happy,” “I’m enjoying this beer,” “My team is going to win it all,” “I saw that television show, it sucked!” and “That was a clever remark you or I just made.” And those are just a few of the myriad possibilities of Arrr!
And those are just words starting with A....check out the website for advanced talk like a pirate instruction - or at least the words that start with other letters! Use at your own discretion.

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Howdy Lunies, thought I should poke my head in and say g’day, remember me. We’ve been touring the Australian Outback spending some time in the Strzleckie Desert, so not able to communicate too well. The country is amazing as it has had some rain, especially the desert areas, so there is an abundance of wild flowers. Currently camped on the Darling River, which is flowing, so had some time on the water. Home in about a week where I will need to ‘reaquaint’ Myself with the Erg. Trust all are well, Cheers Baz

Always good to hear from you, Baz. Australian Outback is a wonderous bunch of places - I always go on a bunny trail of the mind when I start figuring out where places like the Strzlecki Desert are relative to the rest of Australia. And to find out that one section of the Strzlecki is the Cobbler Sandhills, home to some sheep called Cobblers that are most resistant to shearing...well, that was an added plus. When I first looked up Cobbler Sheep, all I found was some recipes for mutton....yikes. Run sheep run...don't get fleeced either.BAZzy wrote: ↑September 11th, 2020, 5:58 pmHowdy Lunies, thought I should poke my head in and say g’day, remember me. Continuing on about the sheep:
Just read a drover's account of managing a lot of 1300 sheep through Queensland, including moving them through a portion of the Strzelecki Desert. It was not recommended that the sheep be moved through that area because it was so dry, and there were innumerable wild dogs that would try to nab the sheep. The drover was told that he would lose the lot of them if he went that way, but like many independently minded folks, he said he would do it anyway. That he feared floods more. And darn if he didn't run into some flooding. And drought - account tells of resurrecting some old wells that were filled with silt, so they could bucket out 50,000 gallons for the sheep. His team had to light fires around the sheep each night to keep the wild dogs away. Took them 38 days to get their sheep to market...and they didn't lose a single sheep. This account was written in the 1933 time frame. Baz started this bunny trail...or sheep crawl. Never know what he'll come up with next.

Ah, I always enjoy a good sheep story, especially ones with a happy ending.
I guess it was only a short-term happy ending for the sheep since they ended up at market.

A Colorado Fall blue sky day at Lake Granby with a dusting of snow on the mountains... ! Several big wildfires still burning - yet last week's snowfall dampened their intensity. We are receiving smoke from out of state - but air quality index is nothing to compare with California, Oregon and Washington's 300 - 450 indices even on our recent smokiest days. Grateful.

And now a side note...
The ospreys or seahawks are still in residence at some of the high country lake areas. These birds dive down into the lake, and snag a fish (rainbow trout and kokanee are stocked in Lake Granby for example). Before heading back to the nest, the osprey goes to what we have called the killing pole and beheads the fish. These killing poles are generally pretty close to the nest, and are just about the same height. I'd describe these as Discovery Channel looking poles with all the pieces and parts falling to the ground for crows and other scavengers to take.
It is not unusual for the ospreys that nest closest to our location to do a low fly by to check out dogs, people when we first arrive. And sometimes they do have a fish in talons...and sometimes there is a camera nearby!
Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
It has been 6 months, but I finally was able to post my first meters for the season. Our Y closed down March 14, and just opened again last Wednesday. There are only 2 ergs there, and one is now taped up to maintain distance. I'm not a good waiter. I got in line with Concept 2 on July 27 to order one for my very own, but my order date is now Oct 5. Let me repeat, I'm not a good waiter. I work at a bicycle shop (Jack's Bicycles, Monroe MI), and we have had the same issues with the supply chain. Some of the bikes we usually stock will not be available until - wait for iiiiiiiiiit - late March 2021. Fortunately, I have a young dog to take me for walks (Jasper the Labradoodle), and an 11 year old grandson, Noah, to come over and do online school at our house (and pester and prod and poke at me all day), so I haven't exactly turned into a carrot. Nice to get back at it, but it's HARD (and slow) with a mask on.
