SUP conversion oar board - great idea or gimmick?

The oarboard has some unique strengths related primarily to one's ability to break it down into a small package for shipping or storing. I take my 16' inflatable SUP and oarboard on floatplanes to remote lakes and ocean bays for extended wilderness camping/rowing, and it's great for that. It is stable, carries a load, and is tough. And when I'm done adventuring, it gets rolled up and conveniently stored out of the way in a corner of the garage or a closet.

It's also great for teaching the grandkids to row. I can sit on a milk crate on the bow portion and instruct, with virtually no chance of rolling. It's that wide and stable.

It is not a replacement for my rowing shell (currently a Maas Aero). Any true rowing shell will deliver more run between strokes, and will have a more delicate feel. For the pure exhilaration of rowing, a true shell (carbon, glass or wood) is clearly superior. After all, that is what they are designed for!

All boats represent compromises. Choose for the right reasons, to fit your individual circumstances, and you will not be disappointed.
