Haven't checked in for awhile. Been lifting weights for about a month. Spending time riding my new fat bike out on the gravel roads. Still manage to put in a few meters on the Concept 2 machines. School starts for my girls next Monday. Hoping that goes well. We've kept very healthy here. Hope you all are doing well also.

Who's Dropping In?

Post by Thor MW » August 13th, 2020, 9:13 pm

Hey guys
I know, bad Thor. I haven’t been around in a while. Sad news is my gym closed its doors for good. I guess not enough members were paying their memberships like I was in the hopes to keep it going. Belly expanding and my big beautiful muscles shrinking. Ok, maybe they weren’t that big but they were getting there.
Janice bought a Bike Erg and it just showed up today. I put it together and it went as it should. C2 does a nice job lining up all the holes and so on. I then took it for a spin. I did 21K so don’t confuse that with rowing when you gather those stats. Right now I can just handle 10K rowing. Um, tops. I used to be able to do 20K but those days are a bit back there somewhere.
I am mostly liking the bike well enough but for the saddle. Oh man! That is one hard puppy. What’s with the long nose on that thing. I think it needs to be a bit wider too. My current plan is to mix up biking and rowing. Maybe cut back on cookies and ice-cream? Nah, just row and ride more.
I hope all of the Lunes are well. I am mostly a home body and of course that hasn’t changed so Janice and I are fine.
Keep on rock’n and roll’n folks.
Soon to be Mighty Thor.

Thor -

You can change out the bike erg saddle, but you don’t need to do that. I recommend a good pair (or several) of bike shorts. And starting out at 21K is maybe a lot for initially breaking in the saddle - both YOUR saddle and the bike saddle. There are some cushioned seat covers out there but they can have their own hazards. Trust me, you will adapt to the saddle and it will be fine. You will soon be tempted to do the half century if I know you.

All that aside, I am delighted to hear you have a bike erg. I think it’s a good erg especially for those who like to lift weights as other aspect of training.

I like the bike so much more than the rower. I felt like I was cheating, when I first got the bike, and saw that all the meters counted. I actually only posted half my meters, for the first several months. But, I got over that quickly enough, and figure it is what it is. It's all a game, and when it "counts" C2 halves the bike meters for challenges. The saddle does take some getting used to, and, I wish it would angle back, just a bit. I have a padded seat cover, and padded bike shorts. I ride hands-free most of the time, and I used gloves, for a while ... no idea where they are, now, though, I suspect one of the grandies made off with them.

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 8.13.2020

Post by Kona2 » August 14th, 2020, 11:32 am

Dog Days...Week 2....it's get it done or yer out day!

Hazy, smoky blue skies here due to all the wildfires - makes your eyes sting for sure. Still, the dog walks must go on!

Great to hear from teammates as the season progresses...and knowing that many gyms remain closed, or are closing, or in bg's case - reopened but didn't provide access to the indoor rowing machine! It's enough to make you buy your own erg(s)...and the waitlist for a bike erg is out into October, so if you're considering it...put your name in the erg hat !

Thanks K2. As you suggested, we did order a pair of shorts each to see how they go. They are less expensive but the reviews were quite good. At least then I will have an idea for what I like or don’t like in shorts to better be able to decide on the right ones for me. Mine are Sportneer. I don’t know what Janice ended up ordering.
Unless a new gym goes in the same location I’m afraid my lifting days are over. It is just too hard for me to get to any other gym. This one was a few doors over and was a great lifting gym. So, now I’m becoming a cardio bunny but a bunny with attitude.
Bring on the half century, but not today.

You know, I’ve given this some thought and I still have no idea why bike meters are exactly twice that of Rowing meters. It would have made things so much more simple if they made them the same. I understand that they are after the cycling enthusiasts and no doubt the Bike Erg numbers more closely resemble that of road meters but still… So as you say, it is what it is.

Thor,

I immediately replaced the bikerg seat with one of my own bike seats. After a few more days, I just bought a really wide, thick seat with springs. Love it. Maybe the bike shorts make you happy. If not, a nice big soft seat will.

I was hoping you would chime in, Brett. Who makes the seat that you use now? I’m interested in the photo yet Thor will need additional info. I have broken in Brooks saddles without issue several times, but I get that everybody is different. Minnie might like the wide seat with springs - she said she wanted a tractor style!

There's nothing pretty about bike shorts, and they do not make me particularly happy! Which really wide, thick seat with springs did you buy, Brett?

They've just realized that they are going to the lake....let the excitement begin!

Lake is bookended by wildfires that are 20 plus miles away. I was able to capture one wildfire image, but bandwidth is limited here so will give it a go later. One fire is large enough to put a red glow into the skies, but Milky Way and so MANY star were visible. Temperature this AM is 38 F....which seems amazing when I consider the 90 plus temperatures in the Denver area. Many of our teammates are in extreme temperatures at the moment, too.
