Thanks fellas. Low rates have always been a struggle for me so it's nice to see some improvement and the challenges being set are forcing me to raise my game.

Like mentioned on IG Stu, this is a really strong session, I would estimate it to be one of your very strongest PB's? I would just set a time and date for the sub36 10k asap, no way you will fail that on your current form!

Hahaha, fair comment and thanks mate. I don't ever compare myself to people like you, for example, but I do think there is some benefit if you can compare to someone who does have similar results and chase after a tough target that is still potentially possible.
The competitive edge can equally blunt or sharpen your performance if you're not mindful about how you use it and it does take quite a lot of internal interrogation to confirm if you're letting your ego rule your decisions.
I think I'll give the 10k a go next week but we'll see how I feel

You could easily start comparing yourself towards me, or at least set it as a target. While I have been stuck since my big Tour de PB's back in March/April, you(and Ian) have been closing the gap at a rapid pace. Your recent 30R20 shows that you are probably not more than 40-50 seconds behind my PB.

I dunno mate - i still shake my head in disbelief as I look at your PB's. I've been mapping out to target 5km again and there just seems no way in hell that sub 17 is possible at this stage - so your time there is particularly impressive. I know if i keep training it'll happen but i probably need to start being a bit more targeted and focussed with my sessions. I've been itching to tick the sub 20 5k off the list, so happy to get it done. It wasn't a good day however. This was meant to be a 95% effort, but it was probably the hardest row I've ever done. My max heart rate when rowing has been 191 and I hit 190 with over 4 minutes to go. It was not fun. Based on my 2k time (where I had a bad day as well), my equivalent 5k is 19:34, so it's quite a way off.
The last 3 time trials I've done (2k, 2k, and 5k), I've had a bad day. I've always had no problem giving a little extra on race day (running, crossfit, 1 rep maxes), but 3 times doesn't seem like a coincidence for rowing. I suspect it's something to do with my form. Maybe I just don't relax and start yanking with my arms or something. My HR after 1k today was 175 and after the first interval of my 4x1k last week was 175, but that was at 1:52 pace! I have similar comparisons for all 3 of the time trials where I have underachieved.
The takeaway for next time is to just let my stroke flow naturally and get into a rhythm.

Finding the rhythm and stroke that is right for you is really important otherwise as the general effort is hard enough as it is without it not having a good flow to it.

This felt really good and I possibly could have squeezed more out but a 35 second increase on a PB for a distance that I have tried and failed many many times to beat over about 10 years is one of the sweetest feelings I have ever felt in sports.
Started off thinking I'm a bit fatigued from my 30r20 so take it relatively easy(ish) and see what happens, and this happened....
