Our Community Rowing Inc. boathouse in Boston opened last week. Single boats only. Masks on all the time except when finally on the water. Boats and oars washed down and sprayed with disinfectant before and after rowing (so twice for each use....once by the rower coming in and again by the rower going out). Hopefully a good start that won' have to be rolled back to closing down.lindsayh wrote: ↑June 29th, 2020, 10:03 pmI think there is a lot of that to come - it is even hard to see Tokyo 2021 eventuating.
We now have the gyms open here with careful controls thank goodness although a second surge has occurred in one state - Victoria - whilst we are still pretty much controlled elsewhere.

Re: Forum Flyers
As expected, my motivation for Sunday's BRVC D final was lacking. I noticed that quite a few others had bailed from the finals in general. In particular there was one absentee that had looked like he might give me someone to row with, so I prepared myself for a lonely time at the back of the 5 entrants.
I managed to set off at around 1:59-2:00 pace, but started seeing a few too many 2:01s and 2:02s in the 2nd third. I managed to roll up the sleeves a bit though, and pull some 1:55s and lower near the end to finish 0.7 faster than Saturday at 7:58.2. Looking at the split graphs afterwards I was a couple of metres ahead of my Saturday pace for most of the race, but then slipped behind, before rallying in the late sprint finish.
Overall, glad to have done it. I haven't watched the livestream for Sunday yet, but they'd clearly made some effort to flesh out the commentary (my wife said they mentioned my 350000 season metres, not realising most of that was on the BikeErg). I watched Saturday's livestream afterwards, and they gave the Forum Flyers name a thumbs up ("a great name" I think I remember them saying), so maybe my efforts were not in vain
.
Looks like we floated 5 boats this month on the CTC which is solid. And we left a lightweight and lady on the dock, so it should be easy enough to find 3 chunky men to get that floating next month.

Well rowed Sir! Hard to explain second of two efforts on consecutive days producing the better result. A lavish multi-day recovery may not be necessary, perhaps even signaling the body that the job is done in one? Peak prep still a positive factor? I think so. Improved familiarity with the context of the task? Certainly the cues for the locked down homeboy are challenging but not those of the public arena. Does the central governor sleep on it and decide there’s unfinished business?Slothful1 wrote: ↑July 1st, 2020, 8:03 amAs expected, my motivation for Sunday's BRVC D final was lacking. Whatever the answers, asking the hero of the piece for a third adrenaline peak in a week is a bit much. Best use the TokyoHenley as a debrief, Dave. And the entire month a chance to dream up a diabolical Flyers CTChallenge in August.

Nice efforts so far on the CTC. I am leaving on a holiday tomorrow so no rowing the next couple of weeks. I'll try to get an effort this evening. Think i'll try a negative split for once, start off relatively easy and slowly crank up the pace.

Re: Forum Flyers
Thanks, Jack. I suspect I held a tiny bit back on day 1 seeing it wasn't going to change my final position and I just wanted to beat 8 minutes. But didn't sandbag a whole lot though, given that I started losing ground a bit in the lazy 2nd 3rd, and needed my trademark faster finish just to get back under the previous day's time. Definitely memories of Paris there, where the lazy patch left a lot in the tank for me to ramp up near the end (under the helpful cheerleading of Rickjackarabit wrote: ↑July 1st, 2020, 9:50 am

Yes CTC choice to be made in the coming weeks. I'll put out an official call for ideas in the next day or so once I've studied the history books and thought about my initial proposals. Use this as an early warning to get the cogs turning, team!

Re: Forum Flyers
Thanks Lindsay. Not so solo - the feeling of having my efforts on public display added a little edge to proceedings. And my wife was hovering to the side watching the live feed, so I had to push through.
She did a video of day 1, and I've realised that I need to go back to basics on the technique. What felt like perfect sequencing on the drive and recovery (plus moderate leanback) definitely wasn't what was on the display. Weird dropping of hands after clearing the knees on recovery, plus leaning back way more than I realised, and back opening earlier than I thought. So that's going to be an interesting project over the coming weeks as I start another training plan cycle.

Plain old works for me, LOL! I'm plain, ridiculous looking thanks to my quarantine haircut gone wrong AND I'm old!
Got it done. Wasn't real sure, because after the last one, I tried rowing a couple times, first time, had big nerve twinges at any attempt to go faster than 14 spm, so I packed that row in pretty quick. Next one a day or so later went relatively smoothly for 8 minutes at 18-19 spm, but started feeling some mild pain in my right butt at 8 minutes. And it got worse afterward, so I rested and didn't row for a few.
So my goal today was to try and finish. Started slow, VERY slowly worked towards faster, got to 20 spm towards the end without anything feeling weird. So my usual snail time, but a boat left the dock!

Consultation for spine steroid injection tomorrow. Won't be an actual injection, just them telling me what goes on, maybe me getting to ask some questions and getting the paperwork in order. I just hope when we do it, it goes OK. I still have a bad memory of the pain from the steroid shot my foot doctor tried in my right foot for the problem toe. It sure didn't help and put my foot in pain for several weeks after. But gotta do something, insurance won't let me talk to a surgeon without trying this first.
Meanwhile, virus cases starting to hit our area. I was going to go to the gym Friday evening (a time there is usually hardly anyone working out), and try to just do one set of my normal stuff, see how my back reacted. I checked their website for open hours only to find out that someone who had recently worked out at the gym had come down with the virus. And their statement about having 'deep cleaned' in April/May (doubtful the town had even had an active case at that point) just didn't feel reassuring somehow now that it's JULY!
Guess I'll wait and see if more cases come of it. If not, perhaps I'll go. With mask and face shield most likely!
