Since I started erging semi-regularly 5 years ago, my big target has been to row 8k in 30min. Thanks partly to COVID lockdown, I have had my most consistent stretch of following the Pete Plan ever for the last 6 months.

I attempted to hit my 30min target on Sunday, but HD with less than 5min to go. I think I was just too hot in the afternoon (It was not more than 25C here in Berlin though!). I also probably got the pace wrong as at time I was hitting a predicted time on >8100m

So today I got up early to take advantage of the cooler air - and did it! 8005m in 30min. I was today much more sensible with the pace and it paid off. Was still a massive psychological challenge and my HR was fairly uncomfortable towards the end.

I just wanted to get this done before it really becomes to warm to push myself, and who knows - maybe I get COVID and can never train to the same level?! I just wanted to be able to say in the future that I used to be able to row over 8k in 30min.

Next target is <18:30 5k (just need 3s for that) and I might try a 2k just to see where I am now.
Awesome row! Big milestone to hit and as others have said, it will help you mentally for other challenges.

Congratulations! That's a great 30 minute row. I bet you crush 18:30 next time you try it.

Beating 8 km in 30 min is definitely a big deal I think.

@DNA - good row that. I'd actually say that was harder than 18:2x for many people...certainly for me at the mo.

Rested up for a few days and retested my 5k. Followed Stu's advice and went out a bit faster and tried to hold on to it. Felt really good and delighted to join the sub 18 club. The last kilometre was really tough but I am so happy. If I never go faster than this again I can live with it.

Good news.....new PB for HM at 1:20.17

Bad news........I definitely had sub 1:20 in me. What a weird session. I decided to go out faster than planned pace (this has become a bad habit) and then see how I felt. Well, first issue I had a few stops to fix music issues with phone randomly stopping. However, even with that I was way ahead of PB pace with 10k to go but starting to struggle. Slowed down some but realized I could stay at slower pace and still PB. Then with 7k to go I had another music issue and it took about 10 seconds to fix. At this point I gave up on PB attempt and started gong even slower but again realized a PB was in reach. Then with 4 k to go I was right on PB pace with projected time but was struggling and again let my mind tell me to slow down, I did and thought last 4k could be a cooldown. Get to 2k to go and I realize I am still now not too far off PB pace and started gong faster. With 1k to go I now know PB in reach and go even faster and then with 500m to go I pull in the 1:30s the rest of the way.

So, I get the PB but was terribly paced with a few stops. I know I have stated music issues before and you might say just go without. I can do that with shorter rows where I dont even really hear it but for longer rows I need music as hearing myself breathe is a huge distraction.

Anyway, I know my fitness is better so thats a good thing.
Congratulations Keith. Nice row

Thanks Stu. Appreciate your advice from a few weeks' ago as it worked. Not sure I can go much faster without doing more training which I don't want to do. Maybe try and improve my 2k now.

Well done Phil, sub18 is a big milestone! Your last effort clearly showed that you can do it when you're mentally ready. My sub18 felt the same, last k was super hard and I was so happy to have struggled through.
Now another big milestone should be relatively easy to get, 8k for 30' :)

Thanks Ian. I did feel a real sense of achievement - a bit like when I went under 7 for 2k but this feels better. Am as happy with this as when I went under 9 mins for 3k running nearly 30 years ago. All the best with your continued progress which is an inspiration as well.
