LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.

A member of an indoor rowing team or club? If so, this is the place for you.

Can this one team row to the moon and back?

COVID 19 has made me a stranger to the YMCA where I erged and to this site. Even though the "Y" is again open I don't feel safe returning. Half the fun of erging was the social interaction I enjoyed. I'm seriously considering purchasing a Model D as I don't see the "Y" as being an option for a long time. Was wondering how many here owned their machines...
Hi Jamie, Yeah ... over 25 years for the rower, a little over a year and a half for the bikeerg. And unfortunately, it does seem hard to imagine gyms going back to normal for a long time.

For sure the C2 Rower is the best piece of exercise equipment I have ever bought. Had mine for about 11 years and was initially using it for Rehab after detaching my hamstring. And understand what you are saying about the Y, my partner Janet is a member locally, but feels the same way in terms of going. Cheers Baz (Sunny day in the Harbour City... :) )

Our son bought an erg (rower) and had it delivered to our house, while he was in Europe ... I think it was his way of saying that we were too fat, and he thought we should exercise more! That was back in 2007. We've both used it at least 5 times a week, maybe more, ever since. It was a good intervention. We bought the bikeErg, three years ago, and I like that even more. (Not so, DH, who still uses the rower, exclusively.) We watch movies or a tv series, every night, while we exercise. I can't even imagine having to go to a gym, or Y, any more! Definitely a vote for investing in your own machine/s.

Based on the numbers of people who continued to erg after lockdown started, I would say probably 50 own their own erg(s). Many have two or more in their erg stable.

We bought the erg in 2007, as I figured that if I exercised daily at least as long as it would take me to a gym and back,
it would help me lose some weight and improve my fitness...
I think that it was the best decision we made, even before COVID-19... I can't even imagine not having it now...
We upgraded to a PM5 just a couple of weeks back and are very happy getting more details about each row, now that the challenges got us into a more competitive mood ;).

Thanks for the feedback. I'm now on the waiting list for a model D. Checking Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, Amazon, and even E-bay it turns out that buying new direct from Concept 2 is the best deal. A brand new YMCA was built two blocks... some 500 steps from my house. It was like enjoying my own private gym! Really miss going but I can't fathom how the enviroment could be made safe under the current conditions.

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 5.30.2020

Post by Kona2 » May 31st, 2020, 10:54 am

Image And Crew Dragon has docked at the Space Station....

And Jamie B (brick1101) will be celebrating his own inaugural row in a couple of months! A brand new erg (and those that we've had for many millions of meters) is such a rush. Always nice to know that the last person on your erg was you. Gyms and recreation centers are in a tough spot, as are those who use them. (Sometimes it seems impossible to make room to store an indoor rower, but Concept2's footprint is pretty compact overall.) When I travel to Tucson, I have to use a recreation center for an exercise venue. Initially, there were paper towels and spray cleaner provided for clean up between equipment users. Then, as a cost-savings, the paper towels were taken away...and you were to bring your own towels and clean up. You know what didn't happen. I bet that there will be paper towels there next time I'm there.

Spent last week sweating it out doing demo for a big house renovation. I think we're past most of the hard labor so hoping to get back in the saddle again. I'm looking forward to the new event. Might do all of them on all the machines. Just did a circuit of 20 minutes on each. Feels like I lost something by taking a week off. Oh well. Time to get in bikini shape. (First step will be getting back under 300 lbs.)

So what’s everyone rowing on Monday? I am going to knock out the 10k first thing. I just hope I can turn in a competitive time.

I think I might follow your lead with the 10k if I feel good tonight. Then maybe alternate between rankable and non-rankable events. While I know I want to get some scores on the board for the Nonathlon (which runs for hte whole season), I am sure I am not going to be able to give my all on a 1609m row, because I have no previous time to beat (althogh I'm sure Paul's law should be able to help out a bit).

I am still a newbie rower so I will be relying on Paul’s law to help with pace for a number of the strange distances in this challenge that I have never attempted before.

I have a busy day ahead, so I'm going to knock out the 1 minute and the 1,000m rows. So that I can rerow the 1 min again later in the week.

A heptathlon! What a great challenge to get back in the saddle on! I feel better after my break and am anxious to get back into regular rowing.

BTW I got tested for the Covid-19 antibodies and it came back positive, so as I suspected I did have the virus during the Spring Series (that really fun :P new challenge). So that explains the heart racing and the lethargic feeling. At least mine was a relatively mild case. I just hope it gives me immunity to any future exposure. Thanks for all of the support Lunies. You guys are an inspiration and a great group of teammates.

Good luck Ken! I bet you'll exceed your expectations. And with just starting out you'll be breaking your PR at every turn. :)

Whooooosh! That's the sound of you and your erg flying through yet ANOTHER month!

Ok...this last couple of months sometimes felt like a year...especially the lockdown parts. On the flip side, we've had some interesting Concept2 challenges to stir the team up a bit...and the Heptathlon Challenge starts today. I feel a whole new spreadsheet moment coming up as we work to fill in the blank space by the each of the events (and as Jodi notes, some of you will be doing do-overs on a couple of segments ). Can even accomplish multiple events in one day!

The Events

RowErg and SkiErg BikeErg

Event #1 1000 meters* 2000 meters
Event #2 1 minute* 1 minute*
Event #3 10,000 meters* 20,000 meters
Event #4 20 minutes 20 minutes
Event #5 1609 meters (1 mile) 4000 meters*
Event #6 10 minutes 10 minutes
Event #7 6000 meters* 10,000 meters
