Calibration?

Post by clampe1066 » May 26th, 2020, 11:09 pm

I got on Concept 2's wait list on April 1st and received my bikeerg today.

A large section of the side of the box was crushed pretty good so I was a bit worried, but Concept 2's excellent packing design protected everything and it was in perfect condition. Except one of the two 3" bolts had a solid head with no slot to actually screw it into the machine. Factory defect that got by QC.

From reading, I was aware that calibration was something that has to periodically be done on the bikerg. Today, I did it and was shocked at how involved it was and how long it took. I had to pedal up to speed at about six different damper settings and I had to do each damper setting three times!

Is it going to ask for this every single time I want to row one of the official times/distances on Concept 2's website? That would get really old the second time I had to do it. I see there is a "not at this time" option but what are the ramifications of that? Will my data be suspect or is it only important in the unlikely event I put in a world class performance?

The PM5 timeline for September 2019 has this item for version 326, which could be what you are seeing:

Additional full calibration damper setting

Since called "additional", the simpler process should be extant.

C2 will have good reason.

2024: stroke 5.5W-min@20-21. ½k 190W, 1k 145W, 2k 120W. Using Wods 4-5days/week. Fading fast.

I don't do that many ranking pieces, but I agree that the calibration process is a pain. What annoyed me the last time was that I went through the process, got it calibrated, and then it asked to verify it, and then it wanted to do it again! That's the first time I ignored it and went ahead with an unverified ride, because my Zwift event was about to start, and I had wanted to do the 40000m ranking at the same time.

I'm near the bottom of the rankings, so as you've noted, it probably doesn't matter if you're not near the top!

When you select a ranking piece, it probably will ask you to verify the calibration, which is a quicker process. But obviously if it doesn't pass then you're going to have to go through the full process.

It is unfortunately an essential part of the way the monitor calculates performance, and can't be automated like the rower's version.
