LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.

A member of an indoor rowing team or club? If so, this is the place for you.

Can this one team row to the moon and back?

I'm on the boards with a 7:26.2. I think my lungs are the weak link. Just feels like I can't get enough oxygen.
Following is a good article on getting oxygen around the body when rowing, I did post it a few years back and dug it out after seeing Brett's post. Whilst it is promoting a device (powerbreathe - I have one), the article contains some 'food-for-thought' information covering breathing and oxygen distribution for indoor rowers.

One of the factors I found when time trialing the 2,000M distance over the years is the 'leg fad' towards the end of the row and this is what led me to investigate it further, noting that leg drive is a key part of the stroke cycle.

Good luck out there. Blue skies and 23 degrees in the Harbour City today,Cheers, Baz B)

Thanks Baz, very interesting. And the warmup in Appendix A for a 2K time trial is much easier to understand than some of the others I have seen, I think I will give this one a go today (just the warmup, not feeling ready for the real thing yet). I did a 30 minutes jog on Saturday, first one in... well, much too long :) , and while it was great to be running again, I got a bad case of DOMS and could hardly climb stairs yesterday. Very different muscles, hopefully it won't impact my 2K time too much, but it certainy has a (detrimental) mental effect when muscles are screaming before getting on the erg!

Same blue skies here, but only 11 degrees at the moment

Tried out the warmup from the document Baz linked to, and the Dark Horse Rowing approach Jodi (I think) pointed to. I liked the former, I think I pushed the sprint start strategy of the latter a little too far. I was really only trying to see if I could do the first 1000 at 1:45 (I very nearly did), and after a brief rest decided to finish it off. Not sure what to think of the result, encouraging as a mark to improve on, but it is a very long way from my target. At least the row did not make me cough any more than usual. An SB

Well, Andrew, 7:14.0 at a pace of 1:48.5 is a great start. You must be targeting something sub-7.

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 5.05.2020

Post by Kona2 » May 6th, 2020, 9:35 am

Image LET'S GO OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY !!! It's the final round !!

Round 5 update:

So far, six guys have completed the 2K (at least their first go at it) and five gals. Congratulations to all who have completed the 2K row! Maria's time trial result of 8:19.7 is amazing! Haven't seen any time trials in the sub-7 category, but I know (because they've told us) that we have at least two gents who are gunning for it. Don't blow a gasket anybody.

Week Dates Workout Entry Deadline
Week 1 April 6–12 6,000m April 14 17:00 GMT (13:00 ET)
Week 2 April 13–19 500m April 21 17:00 GMT (13:00 ET)
Week 3 April 20–26 30 minutes April 28 17:00 GMT (13:00 ET)
Week 4 April 27–May 3 4 minutes May 5 17:00 GMT (13:00 ET)
Week 5 May 4–10 2,000m May 12 17:00 GMT (13:00 ET)

When you look back at this Spring Series, there are a LOT of things we've all learned about how best to approach a time trial. That week one goal of 6K was pretty easy in the scheme of things, although it might have met or exceeded a distance you thought was your max. Eyes wide open with the arrival of the 500 m sprint. Started to hear discussions about strategeries :D and maybe a training plan. Anecdotal evidence of what worked was shared. The 30 minute row - again, many have done something similar pretty routinely. And then the 4 minute time trial happened. I look at the 4 minute trial as even more reality based than the awareness that was burgeoning with the 500 m time trial. The 4 minute trial caused teammates to dig deeper for training plans, and whoa...even get out their old training plans (this is serious business!)...in preparation for the 2K.

I guess this is one of the reasons that I brought up the nonathlon (I know...spelled differently than it should be, but there it is). Teammates who have tested themselves two and more times on the different distances, trying different settings and strategies, may choose to keep trying to improve. The rankings provide an excellent opportunity to see how you measure up in the Concept2 universe - but you have to be willing to put YOUR results in the database...or it's not a very complete picture. Have fun with it!

About the boats....

Post by Kona2 » May 6th, 2020, 10:50 am

Thanks for the atta girl!

The 2K results are coming in somewhat erratically, yet I know teammates are watching to see what boat they get. My plan is to update the boats only once or twice a day, though - because each time I take the computer out....I spend at least half an hour. I'm short on half hours this week, so I will check to see if danwho can support a midday or afternoon results rankings.

There is no way to totally empty a boat. What danwho figured out is that we can put placeholder names in a boat to move the crew from one boat to another. MERCURY in round 1 was pretty similar to MERCURY in round 2, for example. But there were personnel differences between rounds. Wherever the boat crewing was when round 4 final selection was submitted is where it starts for round 5. Crew names that are already in the boat get populated automatically by the Concept2 software. Those that either danwho or I have moved out of the boat temporarily are in the queue of eligible rowers to choose from. A person cannot be listed twice even if they haven't yet rowed for the round. And, to my knowledge, there is no way for a Lunie to put herself or himself into a boat initially - that has to be done by danwho or myself.

Those who get a result in soonest get to fill the boats first. Once we have a boat filled, then we select crew members based on result time, but initially it's just "woohoo! We have a result!" So right now we have 8 guys in MERCURY because they are the ONLY 8 who have completed the round 5 time trial. When the next results come in, we'll look at result times and make data driven decisions. So. Do not worry if you think you're not in the correct boat. I promise you it will all balance out.

In the meantime, the adage holds true: all questions are good questions. And if you have a question, it is very likely that someone else does also. It's been really helpful when teammates post their results on the forum (email notifications that tell us there is a new entry in the forum) because it is a cue for me to go look at the results and rank them.

K2, the Spring Series VIII, which has been fun for so many of us, created a lot of extra work for you. Thank you for all that you've done to support the Luna-Tics and this challenge as well as our daily team activities.

I also agree!
Thank you very much - as always. It is one of the things that really make this team special.

As far as the Spring Series VIII - I thought I was using the erg for general health and well being... not to kill myself :P
I 'had' to do each week's event at least once. (I only did the 30 min twice.)
I was happy with most of my efforts, especially since I rarely do TTs, Some of the events I had never tried before, and some I hadn't done in a long time.
For the 2 km this week, I was actually quite happy. I haven't done one in 13 years, and I only lost 10 s in that time.

Wow, David, you only lost 10s off your 2K in the 13 years between trials. I definitely need a slower watch, or to have my erg travel close to the speed of light so time slows down. Bet Albert Einstein didn't envision his erg traveling on a beam of light while rowing a 2K during that famous tram ride. Well, I hope to see what's what later today.

Yes, the process of updating the boats is manual, and does take a little longer than you might expect. I would say it's inherently optimized around the members of a boat remaining unchanged from round to round, which isn't our situation, especially in the earlier part of a round.
Here are the current entries in the boats:
Mercury
Andrew Stewart
Brett McCrory
Joerg Syre
David A. Alden
Ian Barnes
Corey Anglemyer
Craig Rutter
Martin Marciniak

Apollo
Ron MacBruce
Patrick Heiser
A J Tudury
(needs 5 more entries)

Discovery
(no entries yes)

Eagle
Maria Lane-Gomez
Rebecca Whitcomb
Jodi Nelson
Norma Delaney
Elaine Baruwa
Jamie Engel
(needs 2 more entries)
