Here we are: it's the penultimate day of the 2020 Concept2 erging season! A remarkable season !

We'll be straddling the seasons with this Challenge as it continues into May. What that means for Round 4 is that you could have a season's best in the next two days, and turn right around on the third day and START the season with a whole bunch of season's bests. It's not quite like Etch-A-Sketch because most of you will remember these PR's vividly for quite some time.

With the final week of the spring series coming up next week, it might be good to start talking about pacing for the 2km test/event. A lot of the events we've been doing have been designed to help us zero in on our 2km time. I've been using/abusing http://danwork.blogspot.com/p/pauls-law.html to help guide where I think my splits should be for a given distance/time. Paul's Law states that for every doubling of distance past 500m, you add 5 seconds to your split. So given equal strength and endurance, you can take your time from the 500m sprint event, add 10 seconds to it and use that as your base split time for the 2km row.

http://www.machars.net/ultimate.php can be used to take values from other longer rows and extrapolate pacing for another arbitrary row. Fill out the distance and time from your 6km row, hit tab to fill out the other fields and then use the Paul's Law drop down to pick another distance. It will suggest pacing and a completion time for that distance. These values are obviously not set in stone, as they assume equal balance between strength, endurance, the phase of the moon, your nutrition for that day, the last time you washed your hair, etc.

In any case, I hope the chart and the calculator are useful for figuring out where your 2k pace will be!

That Paul’s law calculator is very intriguing. Paul must be a pretty sharp guy. Plugging in some of the rows I have done and looking at the table that it generates it is pretty darn close.

I have not been rowing long, and I mainly started rowing as a way to get healthy and lose weight, for which it has been incredibly efficient. Finding and joining with the Luna-tics has been a huge bonus. The camaraderie here is awesome and the challenges really keep me going and keep it interesting.

...But I digress. When one of my friends who’s a cross train guy found out I had bought an ERG he simply said, “All I know about them is if your a real rower you can do 2,000 meters in 7 min.” Well, I REALLY want to row a 7 min 2k, but I don’t think I’m quite there yet. I have not really done any formal training other than go down to the basement and row 10k or 15k rinse and repeat. Next week will be my first ever attempt at a 2k and Paul’s law says I should come in around 7:15 and I think I would be very proud of that. Maybe The 4 minute this morning almost killed me, but I want to try it again, probably Friday morning. As to further the drag factor conversation I turned the drag factor up to about 145 for my 4 minute attempt this morning and I believe it helped a great deal.

Trying these events is great fun. Kudos to Concept2 for coming up with this format so we can challenge ourselves in ways we otherwise would not have.

I can now eat (rather than Row) on my lunch and breaks at home! Well, at least for 2 days!

Zach, that Paul’s law stuff is interesting... but, if I read this correctly , if I want to go faster , I have to start “breaking the law!”

I tried that 4:00 again today, every time I do it , I just wanna quit after 2 minutes and it becomes and 😇vs 👹 on my shoulders... the devil wins out many times!

Some great achievements, both on season metres and the competition - Congratulations to all...!

For those with an interest in specific training programs I recommend having a read of the C2 Training guide, and in particular Section 5.9 on the 2,000 metre inter-active training plan.

The program runs for 26 weeks, so it isn’t going to assist with times for the final week of the current challenge, but it is a well thought out progressive plan that will greatly improve fitness and times.

I’ve used it at various times over the years to improve speed and found it has a good balance between endurance and strength.

A kayaking coach gave me a couple of pieces of advice many (too many) years ago. First and foremost, most training plans work, some better than others, you just need to be consistent in applying yourself and sticking to it. The other was simply, if you want to go fast, you have to train fast; the progressiveness of this program will certainly help to improve times.

Congratulations to Gary, Andrew and Ken for the 3M, 2M and 2M seasons, respectively!
Waiting for good health news from Andrew!

I tried and got my PB/PR for my first 4min TT, as expected ;)
I had a plan, but went off the gate way too fast (2:01.4 pace for the first min) and "died" towards the middle... ending up with a 2:07.4 overall pace...
According to Paul's law (thanks Zach!) I should be able to improve to around 2:05, so will have to try again...

I like to thank (in no particular order) Tombeur, Norma, Jodi, Zach, Andrea, Ken and K2 (and anyone I missed), and the rest of you Looneys for the support and good wishes, it really has made me feel supported :P .

I am still coughing, but my test result is in, and it is not COVID. I am relieved, but I was never too concerned. Here in Australia we are fortunate, the impact of the virus on health is well under control, I believe we have only 100 hospital beds across the country currently occupied by COVID patients, so there is more than enough capacity for now. The economic impact of isolation is a different matter, though, my children worked in hospitality and retail and events, and have lost their jobs... The government is helping out in the short term, but I do worry about their future.

On the positive side, it does leave a lot more time for rowing :D .

Looking forwards to a great new season, but not so much the 2K. Paul's law predicts that I should smash the 7 minute barrier, but that was the pace that I did the 4 minutes at, and I did not have another 3 mins left in me! We shall see.
