Nice race Graham. Maybe not the quickest of all but it looks a well built up race. And you got a SB. Well done buddy!

Re: Forum Flyers
Good one, Graham! I always like to see a kicker at the end, especially on those pieces heading past 20 minutes where there is a bit of hanging in hoping the end comes more quickly.
Better than that graph I put up a few pages back where I was slowing down steadily from the 2km spot. I think I was a bit short of time on the rower before I did that piece, and had a false sense of fitness going in (when I targeted a time between my 5km and 10km paces). I hadn't been on the rower for nearly 2 weeks, and thought that time on the bike would compensate. Before I do the 30 minutes this week I think I'll wake the body up with a shot at the CTC, and then hopefully will manage the target pace a bit better.
We have 4 entries already for the 30 minutes, including a new member, Peter Williams. So hopefully more chance of floating the 3rd boat this round.

Nice work Graham
Had a 30R20 UT1 piece down for today so put in an early one, pretty happy with the 7410m / 2.01.4 result whilst staying under the HR cap - have definitely made some good progress on the lower rate stuff in the last few weeks, looking forward to seeing what effect that has when I get back to intervals next month. Will probably do another 2 or 3 30R20s this week so might squeeze a few more meters out

Re: Forum Flyers
30 minutes will probably be a bit much for my back unless it's really needed. In which case, I could try. I see I got on the Thrashing 3rd VIII!
Week 4 and 5 of the Spring VIII are definitely doable. And I think I can make it through the Earth Day challenge.
I did end up with some pain after the 500m, not too bad, could've been worse. But I gotta try to go fast once in a while, just 'cause! I hadn't ranked a 500m yet, so....
Taking a break to type this, because as I was making up a couple Mediterranean style cucumber salads, I was getting shooting pains in my left leg and need to sit for a bit. My back hates standing! And I stood for a bit earlier today too, attempting my first quarantine haircut with hair clippers. (Don't look, Ethel! But it was too late.... ) Hubby better not say anything ... because sooner or later, it'll be his turn.
I hate waiting to see what the next CTC is! Hope it's one I can do!

Re: Forum Flyers
Andrew - I'd be happy with your 30 minute effort full ball, no stroke or HR cap! I'm hoping to at least push past the 7km mark, and push the 40+ PB a bit higher.
Cynthia - I thought 30 minutes might be a stretch, but if you do the 22 minute Earth Day effort tomorrow, maybe just finish off with a really easy paddle to close out the extra 8 minutes. Every score helps, and the end result also gives you something to blast past when you give it a full pain-free effort in the future.
On the CTC, we normally get the next month's challenge a couple of days before the end of the month. MAD are choosing, so I suspect it might lean slightly on the longer side unfortunately. Our turn to choose is coming close - we were down for July I think, but allowed TokyoRow to jump the queue to coincide with the Olympics before they were postponed. So we should be up in August.
I spent too long with work, cooking and frittering away time online last night, so the CTC got postponed to tonight (maybe ).

That's very acceptable. I must admit I get curious when I look at your stats. You are a 65+y woman with very very impressive 65+ PB's. Are you a former pro athlete or something? What's our story?

Re: Forum Flyers
Please please please look after your back, shooting pains??, are you seeing someone about this. From my experience the Erg can be a bad deal for the back or it has to be very controlled and outside of the machine, some proper back core and leg strenthening exercises are needed.graycyn wrote: ↑April 20th, 2020, 9:21 pm30 minutes will probably be a bit much for my back unless it's really needed. All sessions are achieivable and do able, sometime you can put max effort in, others can be done for the team, doesnt matter what the times are. It is just great to get the boats afloat.

Thanks Ronald - actually a 68yo man not a woman! Life time gym junkie (45+ years) - 5 times a week on average. Not really athletic more a fit old fat guy. Average about 2 million meters a year. Discovered the erg more recently about 10+ years ago and got serious pretty quickly and have raced a lot here and around the world - we have a lot of Masters competitions and the like in Oz/NZ. Best was probably Silver in the Worlds at Boston '17 and some high C2 rankings especially in the short stuff over the years. Not very aerobic so the longer it is the slower I get. Struggling a little at the moment as work is messing with my training so a bit slower than I would like.

Thanks for sharing. Hat off to you! I'm deeply sorry for my ignorance. Young and Dutch as I am I assumed "Lindsay" would be a female name. Not realising it comes from the Old English toponym Lindesege ("Island of Lind") for the city of Lincoln and the name was quite common as a surname untill the mid 1900's when it became popular as a masculine first name.lindsayh wrote: ↑April 21st, 2020, 7:41 amThanks Ronald - actually a 68yo man not a woman! At 5:50 in, the camera pans to the three major contenders in 2000m, age 65-69 mhwt: left to right, Chris Cooper (US), Lindsay Hay (AU), and Nikolay Kurmakov (UA). Cooper and Hay gun it out stroke for stroke to come 1st and 2nd: Kirmakov fades to take third. A fantastic piece of WIRC by Mr. Hay, The Pride of Sidney!!!
At 9:30, yours truly has managed to finish on the same day as everyone else and shows his Andy Benko bottle pickup, the fastest thing he did all day.

Very cool to see. I must say that Chris Cooper has some of the poorest technique I have ever seen? Bounced his knees, almost zero upper body movement, pulls to his lower belly instead of his chest, breaks at the knees first en visibly lifts the handle over his prematurely rising knees on the recovery. He came in first but just imagine what he could do with proper technique!?jackarabit wrote: ↑April 21st, 2020, 12:09 pmhttps://youtu.be/-D4Os2Q8FZQ

Greg Lemond said the same of Sean Kelly. Kelly never said anything about Lemond that anyone could understand. Cooper’s execution leaves everything to be desired excepting winning.rtbrouwer wrote: ↑April 21st, 2020, 12:41 pmVery cool to see. There it is...30 minutes.. did what I set out to do, yet am left a bit disappointed with myself. [edit:not true, target should have been a 1:55 avg, not the 1:56 I used]
At 10 minutes in I was sure I would not last long past the 20m mark, 20 minutes in I was surprised that the splitting ache in my side that usually sets in somewhere around 15m in was oddly absent.
Started counting down 10's by the last 3 minutes yet still found too much of a finishing sprint in the tank, meaning there was something left in the tank.
This all is easily interpreted as: I should have done better. Fear of pain is a difficult thing to conquer.
In the meantime Im content enough with my average joe status to accept the incremental progress and aim slightly higher next time (not soon!).
