Concept 2 Model D Preowned - Help Needed
Concept 2 Model D Preowned - Help Needed
Hey Guys,
So I've been meaning to get on the gym wave for a while now, and have always been told that a rowing machine is an excellent way to lose weight as it's great cardio and also works out the rest of the body too.
As we're all stuck inside due to quarantine, I decided to do some research and kept on seeing the Concept 2 Model D and E as the best options.
As everything was sold out in the UK, eBay was my next best bet where everything is stupidly inflated, but I managed to pickup a Model D with PM5 for £1,171.00 GBP + Shipping.
I know it's a rip off compared to the RRP, but I had a few questions as I'm new to all of this and wanted a machine to start excercising at home whilst we're all locked down.
Firstly, the seller told me that it has 1,234,265 Metres done on it so far - is that quite a lot, and how much life do you guys think the machine has left in it? It's also important to note that the seller told me there was no warranty left.
I also wanted to know what I should be looking for when I receive it, and whether you advise doing anything software wise to the PM5 or also checking anything mechanically and cleaning anything out etc.
For anyone who wants to see the eBay listing I won the link is:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Concept-2-Mo ... 3570106476
Would really appreciate everyone's advice on this, as I have 24 hours to pay up for the auction and if there are any major red flags I'll just contact eBay and let them know it's not "Excellent" as described by the seller.
Thanks.

One million metres is nothing. A well maintained C2 should be good for 100,000,000m and 30 years.
With the stealth paint job that machine is no older than eight years. Looking at the top of the rail it looks like the million metres is genuine. For a keen rower a million in a year isn't beyond the sensibilities.
There's a date code on the underside of the flywheel. There's a date code and firmware version on the product ID page of the PM5.
First thing you will want to do is update the PM5 for V168 (or V30 if it's an old one).

I second what Citroen said. The pictures didn't show me any red flags.
Have fun with your new machine!

I think you did well on this - that's likely a VERY recent Model D.
Tell-tale sign: the PM5 has a green C][ logo.
Sometime post 2016 or 2017 there was a hardware change to the PM5 (signified by a green logo instead of older grey) that made BTLE more compatible external apps. (Kinomap, for one, wouldn't work with a grey-logo PM5 but does with the green logo version)
Get yourself the ErgData app for a smartphone or tablet and use it to log rows. Sync it with a free Concept2 online log as that'll push to a variety of ecosystems like Strava and Garmin Connect. A chest strap HRM should be considered mandatory if you want accurate HR data.
Get the machine set up correctly and your technique down. This is the video I'd recommend for that: https://youtu.be/VE663Kg0c00
Don't "fly and die". Find your baselines, say, row a 30 minute 5k. If that was too easy, try a 25 minute next day.

⦁ 2km tests measure your VO2Max
⦁ 6km measures your Anaerobic threshold
⦁ 30' @ R20 measures your aerobic base at a category 5/6 intensity, and if you can build your Aerobic base up, it also pushes up your Anaerobic, and consequently your VO2max which benefits your ability to race over 2km

Yip, I'm being nosey to see what happened there, because it looked like there were no doubts in the end.
Re: Concept 2 Model D Preowned - Help Needed
I'm not surprised at the outcome. The last listing was bid-up far beyond the price of a new Model D - a recipe for buyer's remorse. Seller should have just listed it as a "buy it now" with a fixed price to avoid tire-kickers.

The OP’s intention was clear! Probably goes thru his wife’s purse when he can’t cover his bets. Needs to stand on his own two feet before someone stands on his hands.Would really appreciate everyone's advice on this, as I have 24 hours to pay up for the auction and if there are any major red flags I'll just contact eBay and let them know it's not "Excellent" as described by the seller.

Yep!!
It's the same as the "or best offer" scenario where you accept the buyers offer and they leave you hanging for payment which never happens.
Though it appears that rower sold again to a different bidder, for almost the same figure, maybe the seller will have some better luck this time.
