500m rows are all about getting your rate as high as you can, and utilizing a race start to drop your time as absolutely fast as possible. There are quite a few videos on the 1/2 slide or 3/4 slide erg start. Just rate as high as you physically can and don't stop until your legs fall off!![]()

Ah. That helps. Toes and two inches beyond toes. I kept getting directed to slide mechanisms that the rower sat on so that it moved. ...

The boats that we are seeing in the top spots have some folks who could be world record holders! The Lunies have some strong rowers; but, even more importantly, we have strong teammates who are participating in a lot of Challenges throughout the year. We got our boats out early, but we've sure been passed. My take on this is that you are challenging yourself to be better. Would really not like to see teammates get disheartened that their times aren't going to be competitive enough, and so they just don't enter times for the next event. We'll do the best we can.
From biking and other things I know that if you're going to Challenge your record, it is best to do this with "fresh legs" so to speak. For me, taking a day off before a big push is really key to knocking some time off the effort that you've targeted. Some of you have reported that trying to improve your time throughout the course of a day isn't working as well as you'd like. We're not trying to do Olympic heats here....it just feels like it.
So. Don't lose heart. We've got FIRST EVERS, personal bests and lines in the sand being drawn all over the place. All are worthy of celebration! And we're still Foolish....that April Fool's Challenge doesn't even require that we best a certain time...just meet a certain distance. Uff da. Keep going, Lunies! Character building I'm sure.

And to add to some of the other comments, key to good times is ensuring correct form. An important one, especially in short sprints like the 500m is ensuring you stretch forward as far as you can ensuring use as much of the chain as possible and giving a longer stroke. Also, for the first stroke make it only half your normal stroke to get moving...Good luck with it, Cheers, Bazkpaine wrote: ↑April 13th, 2020, 10:16 amI’ve only been rowing for 8 Months. I tried a 2,000 meter once but that’s as short as I’ve gone. I don’t think I can pull any faster than about 1:45. Am I missing something? I guess its a lack of strength. Can anyone give some advice on Drag Factor setting for a sprint? Is there a sweet spot or does it even matter?
I really want to take a day off before I make my attempt, but I want to finish the April Fool. Rowing every day combined with tremendous stress at work lately has me struggling to even get the April Fool meters. I am very excited about the Spring VIII challenge and I want to contribute every week.

Just out of interest, an Australian who had been selected for the eight's at the Tokyo Olympics, Georgie Rowe (good name for a rower) has just rowed the half-marathon in a new world record time for women in a yet to be ratified time of 1:19:28, shaving about 2 minutes off the record.Shabana wrote: ↑April 10th, 2020, 12:50 am
For those in Australia, if 3 competitions at once is not enough for you, yesterday I got invited to try out https://rowingaustralia.com.au/2020/04/ ... e-regatta/ for an opportunity to use your metres to support your State.
Georgie rowed it in the current indoor-interstate regatta currently underway in Australia...
Mind you, it goes to Kona's earlier comments - some of the people doing what are extra-ordinary times are professional athletes and potentially olympians at the peak of their training.
None-the-less, well done Georgie...! Cheers, Baz

According to https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-14/ ... d/12146388, Georgie was just trying to put in some meters for the Indoor regatta above, and the time is yet to be ratified because she is new to the ranking system, she thought half-marathon was 21097.5m and rounded up rather than down, so cannot rank the time.BAZzy wrote: ↑April 13th, 2020, 6:53 pmJust out of interest, an Australian who had been selected for the eight's at the Tokyo Olympics, Georgie Rowe (good name for a rower) has just rowed the half-marathon in a new world record time for women in a yet to be ratified time of 1:19:28, shaving about 2 minutes off the record.Shabana wrote: ↑April 10th, 2020, 12:50 am

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Well I've managed to get back on the rower for the first time in I don't know how long!! Only did 11 minutes at 2:25 rate and it was tough! It'll improve though! Didn't want to do too much.
I was also testing the connection between the Erg and Zwift and it worked!!
Another go tomorrow if back holds up.

I rowed the 500m distance this morning for the first time in 7 years. OMG that was brutal!

Whoop, whoop and why not another million?! Congratulations to ANOTHER orbiter, David A, on achieving a FOUR million meter erging season! This brings David's total to 82.5 MM lifetime meters...a double orbiter! This is what happens with a couple of decades of doing all the Concept2 challenges and rowing as a steady exercise! We wish you many, MANY more milestones and celebrations!!
Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Thank you, Baz and Andrew. It was fun reading about Georgie Rowe. I remember when Esther Lofgren, the current record holder, set that record at the Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints in Virginia, and the same thing happened to her - she rowed 21,098 because that's what the Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints thought it was. And I think she also wasn't going for a World Record - she was just there doing some PR for satellite erg races - the Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints are a satellite race for the Indoor Rowing Championships, and a really big one for junior rowers, which she was promoting (and also happens to be the closest one to me, so every now and then, I think maybe this year...). I think it also took some time to ratify the result when Esther Lofgren did it too - for the same reason - because it was 1 meter more.Shabana wrote: ↑April 14th, 2020, 12:36 amAccording to https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-14/ ... d/12146388, Georgie was just trying to put in some meters for the Indoor regatta above, and the time is yet to be ratified because she is new to the ranking system, she thought half-marathon was 21097.5m and rounded up rather than down, so cannot rank the time.BAZzy wrote: ↑April 13th, 2020, 6:53 pmJust out of interest, an Australian who had been selected for the eight's at the Tokyo Olympics, Georgie Rowe (good name for a rower) has just rowed the half-marathon in a new world record time for women in a yet to be ratified time of 1:19:28, shaving about 2 minutes off the record.Shabana wrote: ↑April 10th, 2020, 12:50 am

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 4.13.2020

Two more days...hang on...challengers are nipping at our collective heels!!

We're into Round Two...but I can't see it yet on the Team Page...they are busy wrapping up Round One. Initially, I was joking that these attempts weren't Olympic heats...but dang, turns out they sure are. Lot of New Zealand olympic team and olympic wannabe rowers are throwing down some amazing times - guys and gals. Guess we need an elite category for the professional athletes?
Several teammates have completed a recent 500 m sprint...I did a row but not a sprint a few days ago. I can say that from where I was with rowing a couple of weeks ago, my 500 m row was a minute faster than where I started....not quite sloth level. Snort.

lol Jodi! I haven't given birth, but I've watched my wife do it 3 times. I would say that I won’t try to improve my time after that, but it’s like giving birth, you forget how bad it was and then do it again.
