Congratulations Norma!
Looking at our team results I noticed that your new race plan worked and you shaved off 17s during your repeat 6k!!! :D
No matter our final standing, we all did our best and that is what matters!
It seems that we were all energized beyond our initial plans... :).
Go LUNA-TICS, go LUNA-TICS-EAGLE!
Happy rowing and stay healthy!
Andrea, thanks for noticing! It was a lot of effort for a measly 17s.
17 seconds is awesome!!! Congrats!
CarolD, I see you've further improved your time from 31:37.8 to 31:16.8. That is really amazing!! Congrats and go LUNA-TICS EAGLE!!

Thanks! I'm hurting now (in that good way) so I think I finally have a true PR. We'll see if I can walk tomorrow. :D

I’m starting to think about this 500m. My lifetime best is 1:30.2 in 2012. I have no idea what I’m capable of now. Trying to psych myself up. This sprinting is so different than I’ve the distance I’ve been working on. I did a half marathon on skierg this morning with a 2:13.2 pace with out pushing myself. That was easy. I’m scared of 500 meters on rowerg. Anyone else in this boat?
I'm way off the pace these days, but when it comes to the 500m sprint, regardless of the time I do I'll just be going flat-out knowing it is all over in less than 2 minutes (hopefully....!). Cheers, Baz B)

Glad I'm not the only one worried about blowing a gasket. On a positive note, I broke 12 million meters lifetime today. Not a whole lot of meters between 2013 and 2019, but I'm back on track again.

I'm anxious, too. There's no real strategy except fly and die. I'm hoping for 1:35 for my 500m. I'm just not strong enough to put out more watts. Thankfully, the test is over in the blink of an eye!
The 500m was my introduction to the erg, over twenty years ago now. There was a comp at my work gym to see who could do the fastest 500m (and 1000 and 2K, but practically no one would try those LONG distances :) ). Less than two minutes to do, generally with 3 or 4 bystanders encouraging the one on the rower (because it was such fun to watch them lying on the carpet recovering for ten minutes afterwards!). I was attracted by it because although I was not fast, coordinated or flexible, and at the tail end in all other competitions, my bodyshape actually gave me an advantage for a change, and I could beat Iron men, bodybuilders, just about anyone who did not have a background in rowing.

It is easily the event that scares me the most, and I rarely do it now. It is fly and die; although a little pacing is required, every stroke has to be maximum effort to get a PB. Back in the day, I expected to get under 1:30 if I really tried. Today I did 1:37.7, with a very big slow down for the last 200. Did not manage to get a single stroke below 1:30 pace.

Oh well, plenty more days to have another go!

I cranked out a 1:04:08.0 on the middle distance ergathlon this morning. That's my procrastination over doing the 500m. I'm psyching myself out worse and worse. I think I just need to start doing a bunch of 500m and slowly ratchet up the pace.

1:47.7 on my first attempt where I just maintained a good steady push. I waited a few minutes and tried to really push. I had 2 splits in the 1:30s, but finished with 1:48.1. Totally gassed. My goal is to break 1:40 by the end of week. I think I can do that if I'm fresh. I know it's not really a competitive time, but I'll feel good about it if I can do it.

I’ve only been rowing for 8 Months. I tried a 2,000 meter once but that’s as short as I’ve gone. I don’t think I can pull any faster than about 1:45. Am I missing something? I guess its a lack of strength. Can anyone give some advice on Drag Factor setting for a sprint? Is there a sweet spot or does it even matter?

I really want to take a day off before I make my attempt, but I want to finish the April Fool. Rowing every day combined with tremendous stress at work lately has me struggling to even get the April Fool meters. I am very excited about the Spring VIII challenge and I want to contribute every week.

We got all week to get the 500m in so don't worry about that part. My work couldn't be any more stressful either. Fortunately, I have all 3 machines in my office. They are my escape. As to drag settings, I think it'll depend on the individual. Maybe try different drag settings and see how fast you can get it going after 7 or 8 strokes. I typically keep mine on 5, but I'm going to play around a bit.

About the Spring Series..and week 1

Post by Kona2 » April 13th, 2020, 11:00 am

Here's a link to World Records logged on a Concept2 indoor rowing machine for males rowing a 6000 m piece: https://www.concept2.com/indoor-rowers/ ... weight=All

The boats that we are seeing in the top spots have some folks who could be world record holders! The Lunies have some strong rowers; but, even more importantly, we have strong teammates who are participating in a lot of Challenges throughout the year. We got our boats out early, but we've sure been passed. My take on this is that you are challenging yourself to be better. Would really not like to see teammates get disheartened that their times aren't going to be competitive enough, and so they just don't enter times for the next event. We'll do the best we can.

From biking and other things I know that if you're going to Challenge your record, it is best to do this with "fresh legs" so to speak. For me, taking a day off before a big push is really key to knocking some time off the effort that you've targeted. Some of you have reported that trying to improve your time throughout the course of a day isn't working as well as you'd like. We're not trying to do Olympic heats here....it just feels like it.

So. Don't lose heart. We've got FIRST EVERS, personal bests and lines in the sand being drawn all over the place. All are worthy of celebration! And we're still Foolish....that April Fool's Challenge doesn't even require that we best a certain time...just meet a certain distance. Uff da. Keep going, Lunies! Character building I'm sure.

500m rows are all about getting your rate as high as you can, and utilizing a race start to drop your time as absolutely fast as possible. There are quite a few videos on the 1/2 slide or 3/4 slide erg start. Just rate as high as you physically can and don't stop until your legs fall off!

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 4.12.2020

Post by Kona2 » April 13th, 2020, 12:21 pm

Image Image Lucky 7 !

Thanks to our World Erg Challenge team for keeping us in the hunt!

Image Hooboy! THREE more days! Hang in there!

Image
Having to mix in some snow shoveling with erging - March and April are the snowiest months here in the Rocky Mountains. Thought perhaps the tulips might survive this year as they were later blooming....snort. They look pretty with a white backdrop...

Image Perspective important...

Guys and Mixed Boats: There's a 12 minute difference in completion times from team at the top of the leaderboard and the 137th team at the bottom of the leaderboard.
Gals' Boats: There's a 9 minute spread from first to 31st...but for a brief few hours...we were number ONE. No world records, but lots of enthusiasm.

The Spring Series has brought out more commentary from our team, and more second and third efforts, than we have seen in years. THAT"S GOOD STUFF.

We didn't add any new teammates today...and yet we have almost ONE million meters being dropped into the team piggy bank today. Wow!

A note about improvement times: when I was putting the gals boat together, I had written down some of the times that people were posting. Concept2 overrides the previous times when you row a faster session...so I only had a few that I could say WOW about...but I bet there are a lot more.

I can talk technical a lot of things...but I have to admit that I do not know what a 1/2 slide or 3/4 slide erg start means...and getting your rate as high as you can (does that mean stroke)...please explain. I want to take advantage of your wisdom...but I don't know the jargon...
