LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
I feel much better that I wasn't the only one who thought that the initial distances were different. Trying to
do 18,000 meters with no breaks could be really tough for me.

18k is more doable than you might think. You may need to stand up a few times. For me, there’s like a point where it actually gets easier. Like a second wind or something. On the skierg, it gets easier for me after 30 minutes or so. I’d also encourage a good stretch for 15-20 minutes before starting.
Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
I cannot remember a Challenge where the goal lines changed after the Challenge started. That said, there are plenty of race series (running, skiing) where one or more of the series changed after initial publication. But there was an explanation- and I’ve asked. Yes, this is a new series that was put together quickly. Tell us the thought process that’s behind the change.
It would be the worst if week one’s distance had changed after most had already completed it. But that hasn’t happened. Not even week 2 changed. 18K is hard to do - but we have many teammates who are capable of this distance - and distance, Lunies, is a great equalizer against those young sprinters. We will likely have to work hard at getting one boat. The Diamonds will get a bunch of boats in the water if they want to do so. I think the Concept2 powers that be are trying to make the spring series something that has a bigger appeal.
The thing about these Challenges is that they ARE challenges. This one will give you a couple weeks to ramp up your meters, or say “maybe I’ll sit this week out.”
I had a Chemistry teacher in high school who was a runner. He used to tell misbehaving students that he might not catch them the first mile, but after three or four he was going to catch you. Our 18K could be just like that. Go get em, Lunies!

"Once you have added an athlete, by default they will stay on the boat for all remaining rounds, and there is no need to add them again next time. You can, however, change as many athletes as you want in each round. Each team can have several boats."
Does this mean that I'm automatically on the EAGLE boat if I choose to participate, but you have the option to swap me out (without disqualifying the boat)? Sorry, the 18K is a deal breaker for me.
Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Yes, you are automatically on the not yet landed EAGLE (clever gal). But I can swap you or others out. Not everyone will want to do all the Challenges, and some of us aren't even sure we can do one of these. Ah, the good ol' days when I COULD do an 18K on the rower.normadelaney wrote: ↑April 9th, 2020, 10:42 pm

The rules do seem to have changed. BUT. I took advantage of this swapping out of people and moved the LUNATICS MERCURY and APOLLO up in the rankings. I get a list ranked by workout time of all who are eligible for the boats. I am filling as many boats as I can. I think I need one more person to have a fourth boat. The women's boat is in the matrix somewhere, they can see that it is there, but cannot get it displayed. And the fellow who can fix it is on holiday for a couple of days.

Wow Zach, as you said, "Better race plan, better results." Congratulations on a great effort, and great finish! Could you get off the erg afterwards?TallErgs wrote: ↑April 8th, 2020, 5:38 pmSo many indoor rowing challenges this spring - people aren't spoiled for choice that's for sure. Good luck on your 6k! Pain is temporaryShabana wrote: ↑April 8th, 2020, 5:20 pmI am impressed (not just at the pace) that you are going to give it another go, from the graph it seems you were on track until the last 300 meters, not last 3 minutes...
I can only imaging the pain that goes with it. Well, actually expect to feel the same tomorrow, when I give it a serious try. I'm confident of getting a PB for once, it is a distance I have not tried until this week .
For those in Australia, if 3 competitions at once is not enough for you, yesterday I got invited to try out https://rowingaustralia.com.au/2020/04/ ... e-regatta/ for an opportunity to use your metres to support your State.
Go Victoria!
My plan was perhaps not optimal, but it sort of worked. I set out to get a 5K PB and then try to hold the pace for the extra K. Well, I tend not to stick to plans very well, it all seems so easy in the first 1000 metres, and I locked on a split 2 seconds lower than my target. I did beat my 5K time by 25 seconds, and coasted for a bit. But as you say, pain is temporary, so I limped home. Strange how the mind plays tricks on you, though, I thought I was crawling, but when I saw the final time it seems I was still going faster than I ever do in normal rowing sessions, and I only lost 10 seconds.
I am NOT going to have another go at that!
Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
The Lunatics are looking great on the ladder! Well done everybody.
But I am sure there are many boats that have not been put out to water yet, I expect to see a lot come out of the woodwork on Monday once the results for all rowers are in, and team captains have to show their hand.
K2, you are doing a great job, thank you very much for all your efforts. As someone with a great interest in mathematics, I am sure you will be curious to see what strategies the other captains will be using in putting the boats together. Will they put all the fastest together, or will there be other criteria?
One of the greatest strengths of the LUNA-TICS in this type of competition is our "maturity and experience". Currently in the Open Masters, Mercury is in 4th position, and Apollo 9th, which is excellent in a field of 12. The only other team with two boats is Rowing for Beer.
But in the age groups, Apollo is leading in the 50-59 age group, and Mercury is coming second in the 40-49.
On a different note, to those who are put off by the 18K, I say speed does not matter, participation is everything! We are LUNA-TICS: put on your favorite movie or playlist, make sure the handle is being moved a little during breaks to stop the monitor from timing out, and let's get as many boats as possible on the board!

I was thinking of you when I posted that.
Anyway, it's QLD we need to catch up with, they seem to have as many participants as VIC and NSW combined.
NT has only 3 rowers, though.
Cheers,

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
I must have been in a "sleep haze" this morning when I checked in. Didn't realise that the distances had changed. In fact, was looking forward to some of the sprint distances to help improve my pace. Not too worry though, the longer distances will help shed some of the weight gained through Janet's great cooking...! Hi Andrew, We've spent a reasonable amount of time in VIC over the past couple of months, mostly along the Great Ocean Road, that almost (almost ) feel like a Southerner...! Re: In The Virtual Waters !!
Yay and woohoo!!! The EAGLE has landed and is #1 in its class.
Thanks, K2, for everything you've done to get our four boats launched, and for all that you do for our team year round.
Go Lunies!!!
