Hello, my name is Mat and I joined the team a few days ago. I am 70 years old, 5' 9" and weigh 173 lbs. I started rowing about 3 weeks ago. I'm working on my technique and endurance and only time will tell if I will ever develop the speed necessary to contribute in the events that require it. Please let me know if there is anything I need to do.

@MAt: Speed is not everything.. there are plenty of challenges that are about mileage, and there are plenty 70+ guys out there and among us who are tough to follow for us younger folk.

@Ronald: that is an awesome 6k to announce yourself with, you must have a serious aerobic engine left from your cycling days.
Nice to see another dutchie join the ranks, where in NL are you from? Groeten uit R'dam.

Ronald, our former team captain, Henry Strieker, of Amstelveen, is doing mostly skierg these days, but is an active voice in the training subforum, offering excellent advice and wide experience of erg training and racing. You should make his acquaintance! There are other Nederlanders on our roster: Frank Noorlander, Jan Van Hal, Rolf Boers, and José Cubo come to mind. There is also a lowlander subforum which has not been very active in recent months.

What a lot of fun - there are too many new members to track for the moment but welcome one and all - an unexpected and weird benefit from the current problems is a pile of new faces from all around the world. Very exciting. Just takes a lot longer to get through the new Forum pages.
Did a very average 45' today @2:06 and will give the 6km a bash tomorrow I hope but not expecting anything close to fast at the moment.

Thanks for the intro Ronald, and welcome on board Mat! Hopefully you can spot one of my recent posts about all the challenges that you can sign up to, so I don't have to repeat myself, but please ask questions as soon as you have any.

Nice time for the 6km Ronald - you're currently posting the fastest time of our team:

Code: Select all

Name Current Round
Ronald B 22:22.9
Ilkka Korhonen 22:28.7
Martin Stoeger 22:33.7
Ivan Vukovic 22:42.8
Chris Leitz 23:50.5
Chris Whale 24:56.3
Kenni Eliasen 25:40.7
Andrew Stratmann	25:52.5
Andrew Brown 26:19.8
William Haskell 26:30.8
Graham Woodley 27:49.8
With the flurry of entries since I last checked in I've had to do some shuffles between teams, and we now have our first boat off the dock, currently in 9th place out of 22. Great start.

I chickened out again today, but have pencilled in my shot tomorrow morning.

Got mine in this morning. 24:37.1 and satisfied with that. I probably should be faster, but I'm not. At least at the moment. Heart rate all over the place, starting at 119 after the first 500m, hitting 157 by 2500m, back down to 142 by 4000m, back up to 158 at 4500m and finishing up at 146. Far more erratic than normal which I take as a sign that I'm not in my best form. I guess the glass-half-full way to look at it is that I should be able to go faster if I just train a little more.

Also, GREAT to see so many new members! We rock!

Chris, that Ancient Yank wears a weight belt to weighins just so the scale will register. He casts no shadow in profile and is a blur in fotos. The Dos Equis guy shudders when his name is spoken. 🥶

Hi all and welcome to all the new team members :D

Haven't been on here for ages and just catching up on the posts. I did a 6K today for the team although only really doing UT1 and UT2 work at the moment so not very quick as staying under the HR cap (23:57.4). Will probably start some interval work next month with the main aim to get back over 8K for the 30' to begin with, best recent effort was around 7750m so not too far to go and a few good weeks of long interval work should get me pretty close I think. Problem is I'm being a little cautious on pushing too hard at the moment with this virus going around :?

Also getting pretty close to being lwt - something I never believed was even possible until recently as I was around 13st 7lb for a long time - weighed in at 11st 13lbs yesterday so 3 more lbs to go and then maybe a few more to make it a little less borderline - how you getting on with that Chris, think you were pretty close too?

that seems to make sense Jack - hadn't thought of that - lots of meters.

I managed a moderate 6k today but about as good as it gets with current levels of fitness/training - 23:04.2 @1:55.3. Just pleased to finish it I guess

My erg buddy Kathleen (works for RA) has entered the challenge this month as she is stuck OTE at home working. Tidy piece @2:04 too to float boat1

More ellipses than thought in my post, lindsay. I was referencing the C2 Virtual 8s Challenge. Hmmm, might need a useful acronym to distinguish from CTC, IRL, etc.:

C2 V8C
C2 SDC
C2 SAH-8

All happening on the 6km leaderboard over the past couple of days. Every time I go in to check there are another couple of names to shuffle between boats. I like the smugness of the 1st boat boys with their "just chucked a casual time in" or "held myself under a heart rate cape". :)

We've managed to float our 2nd boat today, and currently occupying 26th and 65th positions on the leaderboard.

I started mine with a target pace that was consistent with my recent 5km and 10km pieces, but something went a bit wobbly a couple of kms in. Well, a picture is worth a thousand words...

Image

In the end I only managed to shave 0.9 seconds off my 40+ PB, but I'll take that. Not quite the 20-30 seconds that my predictor was suggesting, but I guess it just wasn't right on the day.

Good to see you getting back into the mix, Andrew. I've been working back through old forum posts and annual team metre lists, and it's interesting to spot the names that have stuck it out, and also how many revolving door people we have each year. As long as we have that core group putting metres into challenges, and posting occasionally, I suppose we at least have something to offer the in-and-out group too.

BikeErg race on Zwift tonight - round 2 of their Classics series. At least got me off the couch and I ended up pushing harder than originally planned. CTC is pencilled in tomorrow, but might also take a quick first sighter at the 500m.

Dave
