How To Prepare To Row A Marathon?

I like to row a marathon in the near future. I rowed four 1/2 marathons. What I like to know: how to prepare, eat or drink, training, etc.?<br /><br /><br />I try to row each month about 200 to 250 k. (real started in januari)<br /><br />Who will help to give good tips? <br /><br /><br /><br />500: 1.39.5 1000: 3.33.1 2000: 7.37.3 <br /><br />5000: 18.40.3 6000: 22.34.0 30 min.: 7794 m. <br /><br />10000: 38.08.9 60 min.: 15153 <br /><br />1/2 marathon: 1.24.05.0 <br /><br /><br />marathon: I like to do this in the (near) future

I think you are physically ready to do a marathon right now. You can row a half M strongly, and are putting in a lot of mileage each month. If you want you can do a 30k in advance, to get used to rowing long.<br /><br />I think the real question is not can you do a marathon, but how fast you want to go and how hard you want to push yourself. Once you have the physical ability to row the M (which I think you do given your times and what you are doing), the limiting factor and the challenge is butt pain, and to a lessor extent, blisters on the hand and cramps or pain in other parts of your body. I don't think you really know how well you will hold up to 3 hours of rowing, until you have done the distance, so my plan the first time I did it was just to row the distance. I stopped and took short breaks, which can be a big help in reducing those aches and pains.<br /><br />If you are not planning to stop for breaks, and want to push yourself at a race pace, well I would say go for it and good luck.

I got my C2 in November and did a marathon in February. I was prepared for everything but that. Those are great suggestions from Canoeist. I would just add that you want to be careful about sports drinks such as Gatorade that are supposed to help with the electrolytic balance. It's possible to make matters worse with too much. Right near the end, if you're feeling terrible, an old bike racer's trick is to drink some coca-cola. That's a nice supply of sugar and for some strange reason, coke is soothing to an upset stomach, especially if it's a little flat. First time marathon in 2:59:11.6.<br /><br />I did'n know what to expect, so I had set my pace boat on 2.02.0. I kept up for 1 hour and fourthy min. and at that moment the pace boat shot me out of the water and I never saw it back. But I kept on rowing. I drank 2 litres of powerdrink and ate 1 powerbar. After I finised I was really tired and everything hurt, but it was a great feeling! I spend 45 m. in a hot bath and now I'm feeling ok.<br /><br /><br />500: 1.39.5 1000: 3.33.1 2000: 7.25.4 5000: 18.40.3<br /><br />6000: 22.34.0 30 min.: 7805 m. 10000: 38.08.9<br /><br />60 min.: 15237 1/2 marathon: 1.23.43.1 <br /><br />marathon: 2:59:11.6

Great job. I was pretty sure you were you ready, and was going to guess you would go sub 3. If I am doing the math right, you finished at around a 2:08 pace; did your rowing drop off or was the added time from taking breaks? Did you take any breaks before the 1:40 mark, or were chasing the pace boat the whole time? <br /><br />I hardly ever used the pace boat on my PM3, but if you like that feature, you really should check out rowpro (you get up to 3 other boats offline, and up to 7 other boats in an online race).

Till that point I chase the pace boat. After the 1:40 point I had to take a lot of breaks. Now I know what it is to row a marathon, I will approach the next attempt differently, maybe a pace around 2.04. <br /><br />My finish was 2:07.4. I like rowing with the pace boat. Maybe I try rowpro in the futher. By the way, I had no butt pain, but at the end I had pain in my wrists and after the race I had cramps in my upper legs.<br /><br />Thanks, Hennie

Next time start off at 2:08 for the first hour, 2:07 the second hour then 2:06 or lower (depending how you feel) for the remainder. When I did my first marathon I had slightly better PBs than you on some pieces and slightly worse on others. I started off at 2:08 (for about 20') but was probably averaging about 2:06 by the halfway point and I just kept pushing the pace a little more. I averaged around 2:00 for the last 30' and finished with about 2:04.5 final average. A few months later I did another FM starting at about 2:06 but finishing around 2:01 with a final average slightly under 2:04.<br /><br />
