It looks like the challenge is working then, if we're chasing each other, and making the chasers work harder :) .

I was about to jump to the defence of the BIkeErg, but I see others have already done so. The challenges count half the logged metres, but for the affiliation leaderboard there isn't an adjustment. So in the Forum Flyers leaderboard there is a bias towards the BikeErg near the top, but you can also filter by different types of equipment if you want to see different slices of the leaderboard.

I will admit that I find it easier overall to accumulate metres on the BikeErg. It hurts the legs and butt in a similar way, but there is less strain on the back, shoulders and fingers, so I find that I can do multiple days in a row more easily. For last year's Holiday Challenge I was well behind the average after a slow start, and did a 100km on my first day of leave. It definitely wasn't as tough as doing a marathon on the rower even though the 100km took me well over 4 hours to complete with only a couple of stretching breaks along the way.

I've been doing the Tour of Watopia and a Zwift climbing mission, but those are almost done and I'm definitely going to mix some rowing back into the quarantine training. I can imagine that overtraining is a real risk, but I'm having to work remotely so still struggle to fit in training during the working week. Admittedly it should be easier to sneak in a morning session before I sit at the desk, seeing there is no school run to do, so must look into that more.

Headsup: new online erg contest from C2, the Spring VIII Series of ranked distances and times for virtual teams of 8 rowers. Looks like a weekly variation on the IRL without age weighting[?] Directed primarily at U19 and collegiate rowers but there is an Open category

Was just going to ask if the Flyers were going to launch some boats for this one too:)

Well spotted guys, didn't know that was happening. Looks like a good excuse to have a pop at some ranking distances before the season ends (and then start the new season with a 2k :? ).

It does seem to be an interesting format - you get to select the team after all the scores are entered. So we just need at least 8 scores a week to be entered into logbooks, and then I can select the best entries before the deadline each week.

"The Farmers" have floated our fifth boat which is great

and the other good thing is that they are only accepting verified times/meters in the new challenge which is a first I think and very welcome
I assume Dave you will register a team for us to join?

Will do, Lindsay. I'm not seeing much I can do right now, because we already have a Team set up. So I think it's a matter of waiting for the 6th to roll around and seeing what results team members are posting in their logbooks. Hopefully then I'll see some options appear on my side to start building some boats (and then everyone should start seeing some updates appearing on their side under the Team section).

I'm planning on going in every day, so at least there should be some daily activity as new scores roll in. It won't be as dynamic as the CTC, but at least I'll try not leave everything until the last day which will be less interesting!

I'm busy trying to fill in all the blanks on the ranking pieces before the season ends, both on the rower and the BikeErg, so there is a busy month ahead! I had a suboptimal attempt at the 5000m in December, where I backed off the pace about 1/3rd in. Heart rate was creeping out of the threshold zone, but it was more a mental thing I think.

So last night I had a repeat performance scheduled, seeing the 5000m doesn't feature on the upcoming Spring challenge. Happy to get through the 1/3rd point on a slightly lower heart rate and mentally more solid. Ended up with a 40+ PB of 20:57.9, holding the target steady all the way, with a final 200m sprint taking a couple of seconds off the time. 19% power improvement on the failed December row, and a 2% improvement on last season's best. Still 17% extra needed to get to my 2008 time of 19:42.4.

Progress on the World Erg Challenge is looking strong. We're in 50th place at the moment, but with a massive surge in entries we're still in the top 7% (same as last year). Our metre run rate is on track to pass 4.7m which would beat last year's 4.466m. Keep at it team!

After having virtually the entire season off due to injury I’m attempting to get back into erging. Still got my achilles and arm injury but rowing doesn’t seem to aggravate them at the moment. Planning on being more active on the forum and on the rower.

Stay safe everyone

Good luck with the recovery! Sounds like it has been a rough time, but good to have you back in the mix.

You're welcome to join us in this challenge, and all the other challenges we do. If you're quick you can join the Forum Flyers team before tomorrow's cut off for the World Erg Challenge. We also participate in the Cross Team Challenge. It's a separate site with its own login, but normally provides some interesting monthly challenges. Let us know if you have any problems getting signed up for the challenges.

If you'd like to join the team, just let us know a bit more about you, your background, etc.

Thanks for the reply, how do I join your team for the spring series challenge? Didn't the world erg challenge start on 15 March?

I'm 38, did a bit of on-water 15 years ago, been erging off and on for years. Obviously will be doing a lot more for the foreseeable. I used to be around 6m40s for 2k and around 17m50s for 5k, but nowadays mainly do 5k pieces at 20spm, would be lucky to break 19m.

Welcome!
They are nice numbers to have in your past and a good incentive to get back to it.
You can join the WEC until tomorrow and log meters from March 15 onwards for the full month if you have them recorded. Just go to your C2 logbook and then click on challenges and nominate the team.
You can join the flyers for CTC and log a result before the end of the month or wait for the April challenge to start. The joining process for the ctc is a bit clunky - you have to go back in a second time to re-enter the information. (the March challenge is 4x 4'/4'R)
