Different versions of model B?

Post by msaspence » March 24th, 2020, 8:07 am

I have an old Model B that I am in the process of refurbishing. It has been stripped down, cleaned painted, shipped around the world, sat in storage and now I'm am finishing it off and putting it back together. However I'm missing some parts. Which I don't think should be a big deal given the way Concept make part list and manuals and part available for even their oldest rowers.... however....

My model B doesn't match any of the pictures in the manuals or online (not that there are a lot). The arms up to the fly wheel are different and are connected to the fly wheel assembly via two flat plates rather than directly.

I'm wondering if it is a fake, or a very late or very early version of the model, or if it was bought in a market with a slightly different build (I bought it in California but I don't know where the lady I got it from bought it), ... or what

Most of the moving parts are the same and I've worked out which of those I need to replace, but working out which bolts go where and which ones are missing is proving to be impossible with manuals for a different version of the model.

Yes, post a pic or two. It sounds like a retrofit kit that we sold to convert a Model A to a Model B. A rare find!!

Sorry I did attach some pics but looks like they failed to upload.

Here it is before I stripped it down

Here are the main parts that seem different to the manuals, the arms and the plates that mount the wheel assembly to them.

Yep, as I suspected it's a Model A that was retrofitted to a B. It was a retrofit kit that C2 sold for some years after the introduction of the Model B which had many of the same parts as the Model A. Included in the kit was the flywheel assembly, arm adaptor plates, skewer return mechanism and PM1. So it's a C2 and any spare parts will work on it. Congrats on the nice clean up! JonW

Oh cool, I'm kinda excited to have (and give new life) to a rower that is older than I am. There are a couple of bits I'm missing that I can't find in the parts store. The bolts to attach the arms to the runners, based on my measurements I'm fairly sure these will do the job, even if they aren't the exact part: https://shop-uk.concept2.com/parts/365- ... -5-12.html

Equally I'm missing a couple of 1/4" hex nuts which are also not in the online store and so far I've been unable to find any in the UK, if I give concept UK a call maybe they will have some? I guess if not I can replace the whole bolt with a roughly equivalent metric one.

I need a new wind damper but I can't find one in the parts store, if I give concept a call is this some thing they might be able to help out with or am I out of luck on that one?

That comment has made my day.

Keep rowing. You'll have a struggle contacting Concept2 UK due to the UK lock down. They've got a notice at https://www.concept2.co.uk/ for it.

Yeah I saw that, I guess everyone is busy buying rowers now they are locked out of their gyms.

I've been sitting on this one for a couple of years now and just giving it some attention now I can't go to the gym.

You've got some resources at: https://www.concept2.com/service/indoor ... schematics

I'm sure Jon Williams (C2JonW) will be keen to help on here and has more than enough years of experience with these things.

masspence- that fastener is too long. You need a single 4 1/2" bolt and three 5". No doubt there's a metric equivalent you could use. Check out this:
https://www.concept2.com/files/pdf/us/i ... Manual.pdf
Not sure of the status of the damper parts. You'll probably have to inquire at C2 USA to see if they still stock them. The 1/4" nuts should be available at C2UK- there are many uses of them on the C,D & E. JonW

Thanks Jon

After some more research looks like I should be able to get British Imperial versions so same size bolt just different thread.

I have the main plastic parts and the screws for the air damper, just missing the small plastic bits that fix it in place so I think I'm going to try and MacGyver something with some washers. I don't hold a lot of hope of getting much help from Concept2 at the minute, not that I blame them at all.

I have also manage to find the 1/4" nut, thanks Jon, I didn't think to look on the later models parts sections.

Good luck with it. Some sort of washer and screw fix should work fine. The frame fasteners are 3/8" diameter which is 9.5mm- and the 4 1/2" and 5" lengths are 114 and 127 mm. Don't forget the nuts. JonW

I need a new wind damper but I can't find one in the parts store,
Roofing paper or truck tire innertube attached with zip ties works great.

I also put a wood arm on mine to extend the monitor.
