Great - but I must say I'm disappointed that I was really expecting increased fitness to mean that I could do more work with the same effort. Instead it just seems like I'm able to do more effort. But it sucks a lot harder when you do it. The units of suck per watt haven't really changed.
I am also a rookie to this but I think as you've been doing a lot of higher heart rate work, that would be the expected outcome. The ability of your body to withstand lactate has improved and your vo2 max has likely improved, your mental edge has improved, and you are able to drop your short painful distance split times or maintain those splits for a longer time, but it still requires great effort because you are using an anaerobic component. Instead, you could try doing lower intensity lower heart rate stuff for longer durations for 80% of your training sessions, you might find the pace will be less taxing as you would eventually get a pace faster than your current average training pace but below your aerobic threshold. The remaining 20% of your training schedule could be intervals.
Edit: Also if you are giving it your absolute 100% all, the 2K always seems to suck no matter how much faster you get at it.

As mentioned, your aerobic fitness has improved but it takes quite a while to achieve the levels that you're hoping for and it will also be limited by genetics, age and former fitness (if you had a good base fitness when young this is a big advantage in getting fitter later on).

Thanks guys. Debated a HD around 10:00 left, and again around 7:30 as I got a painful stitch in my side, but really wanted to push through and finish and keep pushing. I couldn't remember what my previous PB was so I just wanted to make sure I beat that

I had my HR mon drop out after finding a new max the other day. Fortunately they're problematic enough that the thought's running through my head of 'I wonder how longer after it stops does it take to start fee...<BAM>' wasn't taken too seriously.

Started a week ago on the rower at the gym.
Done 500m flat out @10 on the damper (not sure on what drag that is but I’ll just call it:painful) for 1:31.
Got a bit of advice on here and videos so tried drag of 136 and got 127.6.
Today I tried a drag of 143 and pulled 126.5. Happy with that to get things going.
Look forward to training for improving that over the next few months. The last 100/150 metres my form gets a bit sloppy so will aim for endurance and try some longer rows like 1k and 2k.

Really strong over 500m Dean....you've made a flying start!
Try a 2km and see how that feels but beware it's a different beast than the shorter sprints.

I havent been able to post on this thread for a little while, was testing my 2k but not really getting anywhere, so tried a couple of 100m,(various drag / starts) 2 in a row at .17.8, thats a whole .1 off PB, and the first of my times with a 2020 at the end.....

Form will always be sloppy in the last 150m
you only get faster, the feeling won,t change.

As Henry says, if your form isn't sloppy in the last 100 you're not trying hard enough
