Whats up - I'm Ben (Benjamin)

Soon as I joined the team, I hurt my back (its already bad to begin with lol) during a row and had to take a long break.

Now I'm back. Just in time for some challenges.

Will be aiming to hit this 5k every day.

I'm fat... broken... but im addicted to telling myself I will not die during my row. But god dammit I will walk the line of it and consequently feel the most alive when the erg has me closest to death.

Wish I could do longer sessions, but my foot falls asleep around the 17 minute mark without fail. Doesnt seem to be much of a solution for this - probably a combination of an already bad back and weight?

Regardless lets kick ass
Glad to have you with us Ben. Pain is just weakness leaving the body. You should be a lot stronger by the end of the month.

I had a few meters from 12/30 and 12/31 that were included, so I really had just over 40k for day 1. I doubt I'll have any other days over 40k this month, but who knows? I'm alternating back and forth between rower and bike. The skierg is on its way. Can't wait to add it to the rotation. The bike makes my right knee a bit sore. Sucks getting old so you have to be crafty to compensate.

About the bike erg and knees: my take

I've found that the bike erg totally helps my knee (waiting for a knee replacement here). Sure, the first few revolutions are very ouchy but after that either I start dealing with it better, or it actually gets better. Stationary bikes are the vehicle of choice for those with knee issues and are used often for pre- and post-surgical exercise.

I sometimes have to break my erging into segments. This could work for you Ben. If your foot falls asleep at 17 minutes, maybe try a couple of 15 minute sessions.

Likewise, I find the bike erg helps my knees, but, only to the point that I'm not pushing hard. (When I got caught up in the competitive sprints, a couple of years ago, my knee swelled up to twice its usual size.) It feels like riding keeps my joints lubricated ... but I'm not setting any recordable times! I'm currently seeing a physical therapist, to ward off some hip issues, and he highly recommends the bike erg to keep weight bearing joints working. He also opines that the old addage of NO PAIN NO GAIN is fine till you're into your thirties ... then, you're better served backing away from pain. Discomfort is okay, but pain indicates potential damage.

Wanted to go back to an earlier post by David A - made on December 18. Initially I thought allowable days was perhaps subtracting Saturday from the week's available days...but there were 272 more days than there were Saturdays ...so sometimes you just ask. How did you arrive at allowable days?
As an orthodox Jew, it is forbidden to use the erg not just on the Sabbath, but also on Holidays. So each year there can be up to 13 more days a year when I can't row (some times a Holiday falls out on Shabbos): 2 at the beginning of Passover, 2 at the end of Passover, 2 on Shavous, 2 on Rosh Hashana, 1 on Yom Kippur, 2 at the beginning of Sukkos and 2 on Shemini Atzeres.

Other days it is not forbidden (i.e. it is allowable), but difficult. There are 4 other fast days in the year, and a Jewish fast forbids any food or drink, including water, so that makes it difficult to erg.

Clear yer calendars....again! This VTC is shaping up as another epic meter fight. Happily, more and more Lunies are joining in the fray. There's still not a lot of separation between many teams, although some are pulling away pretty steadily. This isn't a slow and steady wins the race - but it is about continuously applied pressure on other teams. So, do what you can do...and then erg some more.

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 1.03.2020

Post by Kona2 » January 4th, 2020, 10:52 am

Weeks go by, and my graphics are still held hostage by a dysfunctional Photobucket website. This is unfortunate and frustrating, and I will forever keep a separate copy of anything that goes onto a hosting site from now on. So. We work with what we have, and during a Challenge like the Virtual Team Challenge, more time is devoted to erging than to fixing and rebuilding.

Meanwhile, whether you've signed up for The Haul or The Big Stretch or some other component of the January Revolutions Challenge, you are sure to be making progress as the Lunie Challenge team is generating a LOT of meters! In fact, looks like some of you will have to be increasing your grocery budget to keep up with your meter output!

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 1.04.2020

Post by Kona2 » January 5th, 2020, 1:54 pm

The galactic erg smackdown battle is raging in the Concept2 universe !! Over 100 million meters have been generated in less than five days. Opportunities to shout hooyah from the rooftops abound! And memories of being edged out of a higher position by a mere 17K linger...are to be replaced by "not this time." Nope, this becomes personal. It doesn't matter what size team you're with in this one....the small are just as mighty as they bigger teams...and like snakes, their bite can be more deadly. (I'm on a roll...go with it!) We need everyone. Don't put up a zero (but a number with zeroes behind it is quite nice).

Current standings - teams: https://log.concept2.com/challenges/vtc/2020/teams

Current standings - individuals: if you want to be in the top 10 percent, you should be pushing 50K by now: https://log.concept2.com/challenges/vtc ... ndividuals

Btw, the top meter generator, Darlene Brennan of the Ancients, is an ultra rower. She has topped 3 MM in this Challenge in previous years, a number only achieved by two people. Concept2 has put out a couple of articles about her (thanks danwho for finding them when I questioned "is she for real?!"). She rows for hours in a day once she hits the zone, and has been known to hit 100K in a day. Right now she's going at about 77K a day. One person. And she noted one thing that is particularly true: this Challenge has changed over the years. She says she could win the individual crown with a million meters ten years ago, and now it takes many more. Similarly, it takes an exponential effort for teams that want to stay in the hunt. Every meter counts.
