Logging non-workout "Just row" rows?

Logging non-workout "Just row" rows?

Hi everyone, CrossFit convert to straight up rowing, so this may be a stupid question but I just started using the app and online log.

I usually do a standard distance or interval row, and my ErgData app will log that workout when time's up or when the meter counter hitting zero stops the clock.

But if I wanted to have a slow/leisurely/lazy row of an undetermined distance or time, can I log that? I really just want it for total lifetime meter counting in the log.

For ex. if I sit on the rower and row 2,688m then get bored and stop, will the pm5/app stop counting the time and "end" the workout, and log it for me to sync?

Absolutely. You can try it even with just a 100m or whatever. About five seconds after you stop rowing, an inquiry will pop up, asking "Are you finished?" If you touch "yes" it will log it. I do what you're saying all the time.

Sorry but don't use the "Just Row" function if you want to start logging your rows, it doesn't work and you will not have anything in memory on the older monitors.

I know its typical to use the "Just Row" if you come from a gym environment, I still get 2004 monitors with nothing in memory and zero lifetime meters because its all that is used. Get serious, plan all your rows.

ErgData is probably different and maybe the PM5 is as well, I don't know as I have never done a "Just Row" :lol:

I never use the "Just Row" function (except for when I'm warming up) but I can understand why someone might want to do just that, and IMO it's perfectly reasonable to expect the software in a PM to be able to handle that situation; and if modern-day PMs can't (and it sounds like they can) that's a problem with the software, not the user.

Just row is logged but ONLY if you press the [BACK] button when you're done.

Ergdata will launch the "Are you finished" pop-up if you stop rowing for 20seconds and will log the row if you touch YES. That's the equivalent of pressing the [BACK] button.

Not true, at least on my PM3. I just did an experiment; sat down and started rowing, the monitor came to life and started running. I rowed for 1 minute and stopped rowing, touching no buttons. Waited a few minutes to let the monitor power down, then hit any button except the "back" button to turn on the monitor and checked the memory. There was my 1 minute row right at the top.

I don't have ErgData, so can't comment on that aspect. I log all my rows manually on my computer. Never once had a failure that way :D

Wow thanks for all the replies everyone!

I did just run a test, I'm on a PM5. Connected to ErgData, hit "Just row," rowed a few hundred meters, then just arbitrarily hit "MENU" as it was still counting. The hourglass icon appeared on the screen, and it said "saving to memory..." underneath the hourglass. A second or two later the home menu loaded, I checked the memory on the PM5 and in ErgData and it was properly logged in both, and synched right up to my online log.

Yes I know that I shouldn't just be doing "just row" workouts for training. I schedule regular, proper row workouts now, or program my own into the rower so it logs and counts cleanly. But I work from a home office, and if it's slow or lunchtime and I'm bored and just wanna get moving without thinking about hard training I'd like to just hop onto the thing for 20 minutes and go for a leisurely row. Plus I'm in northern New England so the rower is just so much more convenient and practical than say going for a run in a snowstorm!

Anyways thanks again everybody.

Good test results.

Keep in mind that you can always enter meters manually into your online log book. I do this occasionally if I don't have my cable with me when I stop off at a local gym for a row since they have a PM4.

Amen on the impractical winter jog.

Wish we had a rower at the office. I'm in Maine, and during late spring thru fall I jog during my lunch hour. But in the winter I jog maybe once or twice a week during lunch if the temps will hover around 30F... Would love to Erg on my lunch breaks, instead I have to wait until I'm finally home around 7pm, if I don't have to slam out dinner for the family that night.

It's still meters pulled whether you Just Row or painstakingly plan your workouts - do whatever fits with your training regimen.

I do the same thing after I've put my daughter down for the night. She might start fussing, and Just Row fits that workout idea exactly. I typically do one planned piece at lunch and then some extra meters at night, and that works for me.
