Fake SkiErgs on ebay

Post by bojam » October 16th, 2019, 11:01 am

I guess some will have think this is a "No Sh*t Sherlock" but...

Beware there are fake Ski Ergs on ebay ... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174066189577

I admit it I was totally fooled till I read the listing for the umpteenth time. It looks for all the world like a C2 machine same handles the same Y shape, same type of stand. Same looking monitor. Is the picture a C2 one or a fake? What are the giveaways?

I hope I'm not to late for anyone.

If you think it is a fake then report it through eBay UK.

Or contact the seller, drive to Ormskirk and take a look.

The seller states that some are not Concept2 and some are, so there's nothing being hidden.
However, I would not trust the monitor to show the same information as a Pm5. Personally, I would not get one.

The cost of the Pm5 would make up any difference in price, and C2 would not provide any warranty.

On the PM5, the lower row of buttons is placed asymmetrically, shifted towards the right, so the rightmost button is centered below the vertical row.

On the PM in the photo, the three lower buttons are symmetrically arranged, and the rightmost button is clearly not centered below the vertical row.

It can't be a PM3 either, because that one has rectangular buttons, which these are clearly not.

Since the advert doesn't actually say Concept2 Skierg, I don't think it is a total scam but only that C2 should take action to stop the source of fake C2 equipment as any problems will no doubt tar C2 reputation.

Ormskirk is too far for me to get to ... 6 hour round trip ... had it been a real one I might have bitten.

If Concept2 don't have a patent on their Skierg design then there's the square root of naff all they can do about it. Just like that carbon copy "Skillrow" ergo.

The PM5 may still covered by a patent (if it has any new invention over a PM3).

Plus the handle cords are black vs white, the bolt placements on the fan cage, and the column spacings are all different.
